The Lens Of Truth DOES work you nigger. Your cartridge is probably glitched.

That being said, I did actually beat that place without the Lens when I was a kid. This was before I even entered the Well or knew about the Lens.

I also backflipped over that spiky log in The Great Deku Tree the first time I played because I didn't know you were supposed to dive. It's cool when games have unintentional hard ways of doing things like that.

>It's cool when games have unintentional hard ways of doing things like that.

I don't know if I'm stupid or what, but I beat the shadow temple, and the rest of the game, without ever knowing about the Lens of Truth. In the temple I just probed a shitload with the longshot, looked at the map for clues about where rooms should be, hit every wall with my sword, and used a pinch of intuition about where things "should" be in terms of level design in a couple spots.

I don't know if I could do it again if I wiped my knowledge of the game. When I was young and gaming was the most important fucking thing in the world I was tenacious about it. Bongo Bongo is still probably my favorite boss fight in that game in terms of coolness.

I don't want to start a shitflinging fight here, I'm just curious.

If 1995 games were considered "retro" in 2005 (example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgVTbH1HWcg), why are people so stubbornly opposed to 2005 games being considered "retro" in 2015?

I just bought a chinashit mega drive and modified it to work with the 9-pin joystick port (I'm on Atari ST though, but the joysticks the same).

m8, you might be good with a soldering iron, but you're terrible at marketing. You shouldn't be asking us if we want the damn thing, you ought to be telling us why we need it. Why was it the only choice when you were all that stood between humanity and an invading alien force hellbent on its destruction?

This game is COMPLETELY unknown and obscure to American Gen Z kids born in 1995-1999 like you. The casual generation, YOLO generation. When you saw the trailer for the PS4 reboot, I'm sure you were scratching your heads.

Ask an American 16 year old if he/she's used played this game and they'll say "wat dat." Ask them what their favorite old-school games are and they'll say "Sonic Heroes, Bully, Simpsons hit n Run, God of War, Gears of War, modern warfare 2, Kingdom Hearts, Battle for Bikini Bottom, Crash Twinsanity, lego star wars, sonic adventure 2, Halo. those were da bess, swag yolo. 👌👏👌👏👌👏"

You selfie-taking pieces of shit still claim to be a "le 90s kid" despite not remembering the 90s, not knowing what Pete and Pete is, not knowing what Clarissa Explains It All is, never touching an SNES, and growing up with shittastic shows that were the antithesis of the 90s like spongebob, Code lyoko, camp lazlo, squirrel boy, gym Partner, Kids next Door, Jimmy Neutron, iCarly, Drake & Josh, Naked Brothers band, avatar, and that fucking Ned show.

So are people who love music/movies/books/television shows from decades/centuries ago posers who shouldn't be acknowledged?

Some people are snobs about being "oldschool" and that's a shame because the best way to keep good games alive is to invite younger generations to try them.

 No.4324

Hah I always end up feeling left out of most of those "only '90s kids will understand" things even though I was born in '91 because my parents were too poor/stubborn to pay for cable back then. My childhood TV memories are mostly of fiddling with rabbit ears and watching static-y reruns of '80s sitcoms. Makes me feel more like an '80s kid than a '90s kid in some ways

 No.4328

>>4305

Part of that could be a legit backlash to the accelerated trend in recent years to appropriate "retro" stuff by people who only want to utilise it to status signal ("such nerd, much vintage").

Part of it could simply be people being "muh sekrit club" dickwads.

This game (well the very first SotB game) is what made me buy an Amiga 500, back in 1991. The guy had a few other games we played: Xenon II, Menace, Blood Money, and some 2-player tank game that was pretty fun but I can't remember the name.

Anyway the first Beast game had pefectly smooth scrolling with lots of parallax layers, big sprites, and a that beautiful soundtrack with pan pipes. Had never seen or heard anything like it before.

The controls are pretty rough by console standards though. It's up to jump, and just the one fire button to attack. Pretty typical for computer games with joystick back then. If you want something easier, the Sega Genesis game is pretty good, but doesn't quite match the graphics and sound of the original.

Anyway it's a pretty tough game. Made it to the bottom of the castle level without cheating, and no further. It's pretty easy to get ganked in this game. You kind of have to memorize patterns and stuff, like in Ninja Gaiden.

Anyway the game was impressive then, but maybe not as much now for someone who's seen even better stuff on Neo-Geo and such. I still like its weird and unique atmoshphere. Some other good Amiga games to try: Gods, Satan, Leander, Risky Woods, Lionheart, Toki, Prince of Persia, Another World, Flashback.

On a scale of one to ten, how would you rate your pain?

I'm actually somewhat interested. Most of the people involved with the production have quite a pedigree. Yes I know it's probably going to do shit and I have plenty of my own doubts. My wishlist for this thing is that it's open so I can put my own emulators and such on it if I so desire (seems like it will), have at least some level of internet connectivity (mainly for software purposes- shitty android devs, for example, are more likely to flock to it if it's got some sort of Android compatibility or a way to download games off the web? I don't know man. Just having android-type games run easy on this thing would be gr8), run decently and be easy to record. Shit, the price is even acceptable.

File: 1456821458815.gif (4.72 MB, 600x336, 25:14, 1437784587892.gif)

I really would LOVE for it to succeed. I like the idea of having an FPGA inside a console, and not just for hardware emulation purposes (Would that properly be called "emulation"?). Plus, the idea of some devs releasing games with the same quality standards as older systems would be great (game would have to be bug-free on launch, etc.).

But, there's no way the FPGA inside of it can be high-end enough to really show its benefits compared to standard CPU's/GPU's, that would just be too expensive. So it would be relegated to doing the console-core thing, and be something for dev's to play with (but that won't really affect users too much). Most developers, particularly indies, are also very reliant on internet updates now, so they would probably avoid developing for it immediately.

Might be a good Retron-3 replacement, though.

It's a scam

 No.4491

>>4489

No it's not. I even know what you're talking about and both of those claims are bullshit.

>>4488

Yeah, I'm mostly intending to use it as a better Retron 5. For $150 they could easily make some sort of much more powerful Android dealy so the hardware is going to be less efficient than it could be but that's fine, it doesn't need to be high end. I think it has some sort of ARM chip on it. And maybe it'll have internet connectivity.

pacing yourself is what you do when you you first start playing smb. then, when you git gud, you can go fast. later mario games force you to go slow. and so do many of the stages in sonic, btw.

I have to second this. The states of platforms and other movable objects when you first meet them in most Mario levels are done in such a way that you never really have to stop and wait for a platform or whatever if you know what you're doing. You can just rush through the levels entirely.

I remember the first NSMB having pretty good level design towards this too, which is why I liked it.

You may have heard of Radical Dreamers -Le Trésor Interdit-, Radical Dreamers -Nusumenai Housenki-, or BS Radical Dreamers, yes? You can download it and a fan translation by now and play it through an emulator, though there is no saving and you'll have to make use of savestates.

It's basically a text adventure starring some Chrono Cross characters. The basic story is that Serge, Kid, and Magil (or just Gil, depending on who's talking about the game, but the fan translation says Magil) are sneaking into Viper Manor to steal the Frozen Flame.

Magil/Gil is who Guile was supposed to be before heavy editing, by the way.

A few Chrono Cross songs originate in this game, too.

I played the original SNES version of Chrono Trigger only a few years ago for the first time. One of the things it reminded me of is how I asked for a goddamn Genesis with Mortal Kombat for my birthday. If I had asked for this, maybe my school years would've been more imaginative.

Same with Terranigma.

 No.4481

I asked for Genesis too, for Christmas. I wanted Toejam and Earl and Sanic in the worst way, those were the definition of "cool."

My father kept trying to sell me on SNES, leading up to Christmas, because he loved Zelda. I didn't buy into it, Genesis was still the coolest thing to me, but thanks to his shilling I put Genesis at the top of my Christmas list and then at the bottom I put "or Super Nintendo" and I made it clear Genesis was my preferred choice.

Santa brought me an SNES with Super Mario World on Christmas morning. The rest was history, after Mario Kart, World, LttP, Super Metroid, FFIII, Chrono, DKC, the list goes on and on, he made the right decision.

I don't see too many arcade posts, so I thought I'd start a thread honoring our favorite arcade games. What are some of your favorites and why?

Here are a few that I still play on MAME from time to time:

1. Crystal Castles - I was fascinated by games that looked 3d and I also enjoyed using trackballs. Marble Madness was another good one of this kind.

2. Gauntlet - Being able to play with three other people was novel at the time. I was so obsessed with this game that I got left behind during day camp at a pizza parlor and I had to call the head counselor to get me. The manager gave me free tokens while I waited so it was a win-win. The Elf and the Valkyrie were my favorites.

3. Street Fighter 2 - It wasn't easy to get in a game because it was so popular, but I played it anywhere I found it. Circus Circus in Vegas had the Turbo version that was my favorite. I played Blanka and Ken the most.

4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - It was a really great 4-player beat-'em-up. Since I was a dumb kid I asked for the NES version thinking that it would be like the arcade, but I was sorely disappointed.

5. Ghosts n' Goblins - This was the first horror-themed game I ever played and it was hard as hell. I loved the NES version, too, though the sprites would flicker in certain areas.

6. Joust - This game seems ageless because it's just as fun now as it was when I first played it. The NES version was a pretty good port and I have a somewhat rare Atari Lynx cartridge of it too. It was my first experience with a physics-based game.

7. Space Invaders - This is the oldest game that I enjoy. I loved it so much that I created a paper collage in high school art class that recreated the game screen with color gradients.

8. Arkanoid - You could find a lot of cocktail cabinet versions of this game. It's my favorite Breakout-type game, though I wasn't able to beat it until I bought the NES vePost too long. Click here to view the full text.

I never played this game but there is a lot to be said about playing an arcade game with a complex cabinet.

A long, long time ago there used to be a place near me called Virtual World where you could play a MechWarrior game in these pods along with other people and the experience was pretty immersive even though it wasn't exactly cheap.

MechWarrior 2 came out on PC around that time, though, so most of us preferred to throw home LAN parties when that happened so that place went out of business fairly quickly.

Tron: As a young kid, I couldn't resist the blue-light joystick. It was badass.

Final Fight: Nobody else at the time (it seems) knew you could pile drive people with Haggar.

Karate Champ: I wasn't sitting in the corner stacking buckets repeating "California" to myself but I remember being less than 8 years old and knowing how the control scheme worked.

Crime Fighters, Double Dragon II, Operation Wolf, P.O.W.: While my mother shopped for groceries, I had to make 2 quarters go a long way. I was pretty good at Crime Fighters and P.O.W, though.
