IT'S COMING IN INFINITY NEXT

UPDATE: Shit's fucked, Josh has gone full Chris-chan with his utter ineptitude in fixing next, and Hotwheels has more or less done nothing to respond to people's concerns. I recommend that everybody migrate to https://endchan.xyz/vr/ to avoid the oncoming storm. I own the board, I help run the site, and it's running on an engine that's basically what Infinity Next was supposed to be. If you need me, that's where I'll be.

PSA: 8chan will be migrating to Infinity Next soon.

It's nowhere near finished, the developer is a meme-spouting faggot who got fired from programming for CWCiki for incompetence, and everybody from /v/ to /tech/ has complained that the board software is buggy, ugly, and effectively shoehorns a framework for a Reddit clone into the imageboard format. But our Fearless Leader has decided that Infinity simply cannot be used in its current state, so all board and post data is being migrated to Infinity Next within the next day or so.

You can read about the migration process, try out infinity next, and tell Josh to go kill himself here:

Rules, read em

About time I got an actual rules sticky here.

This board is for the discussion of games released for consoles introduced before or during 1999, the consoles themselves, as well as PC and PS2/Xbox/GC games released before or during 2003.
Ports, remakes, and mods of games eligible for discussion under this rule are also eligible for discussion.

As a special exception due to their absolute age and relative lack of shitposting magnets, both the Dreamcast and Game Boy Advance count as acceptable platforms for discussion.

NSFW content is allowed, but must be spoilered and must be directly related to a game eligible for discussion.
Please do not post large porn dumps, go to >>>/vp/ for that.

Castlevania Thread

Castlevania threads are always great, whether they're about the classic ones, the explorey ones, or the preference for either - but not when they're not about CHARLOTTE!JONATHON! and God of Transylvania.

What are /vr/'s favourites?

I love everything about Rondo of Blood - the dual-character system (even if Best Imouto is easymodo), the general progression, and the slickest soundtrack in the entire series.

I still enjoy Bloodlines a hell of a lot, though.

Retro definition

I don't want to start a shitflinging fight here, I'm just curious.

If 1995 games were considered "retro" in 2005 (example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgVTbH1HWcg), why are people so stubbornly opposed to 2005 games being considered "retro" in 2015?

Shadow of the Beast 2

This game is COMPLETELY unknown and obscure to American Gen Z kids born in 1995-1999 like you. The casual generation, YOLO generation. When you saw the trailer for the PS4 reboot, I'm sure you were scratching your heads.

Ask an American 16 year old if he/she's used played this game and they'll say "wat dat." Ask them what their favorite old-school games are and they'll say "Sonic Heroes, Bully, Simpsons hit n Run, God of War, Gears of War, modern warfare 2, Kingdom Hearts, Battle for Bikini Bottom, Crash Twinsanity, lego star wars, sonic adventure 2, Halo. those were da bess, swag yolo. 👌👏👌👏👌👏"

You selfie-taking pieces of shit still claim to be a "le 90s kid" despite not remembering the 90s, not knowing what Pete and Pete is, not knowing what Clarissa Explains It All is, never touching an SNES, and growing up with shittastic shows that were the antithesis of the 90s like spongebob, Code lyoko, camp lazlo, squirrel boy, gym Partner, Kids next Door, Jimmy Neutron, iCarly, Drake & Josh, Naked Brothers band, avatar, and that fucking Ned show.

On a scale of one to ten, how would you rate your pain?

I'm actually somewhat interested. Most of the people involved with the production have quite a pedigree. Yes I know it's probably going to do shit and I have plenty of my own doubts. My wishlist for this thing is that it's open so I can put my own emulators and such on it if I so desire (seems like it will), have at least some level of internet connectivity (mainly for software purposes- shitty android devs, for example, are more likely to flock to it if it's got some sort of Android compatibility or a way to download games off the web? I don't know man. Just having android-type games run easy on this thing would be gr8), run decently and be easy to record. Shit, the price is even acceptable.

Post your arcade favorites and why

I don't see too many arcade posts, so I thought I'd start a thread honoring our favorite arcade games. What are some of your favorites and why?

Here are a few that I still play on MAME from time to time:

1. Crystal Castles - I was fascinated by games that looked 3d and I also enjoyed using trackballs. Marble Madness was another good one of this kind.

2. Gauntlet - Being able to play with three other people was novel at the time. I was so obsessed with this game that I got left behind during day camp at a pizza parlor and I had to call the head counselor to get me. The manager gave me free tokens while I waited so it was a win-win. The Elf and the Valkyrie were my favorites.

3. Street Fighter 2 - It wasn't easy to get in a game because it was so popular, but I played it anywhere I found it. Circus Circus in Vegas had the Turbo version that was my favorite. I played Blanka and Ken the most.

4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - It was a really great 4-player beat-'em-up. Since I was a dumb kid I asked for the NES version thinking that it would be like the arcade, but I was sorely disappointed.

5. Ghosts n' Goblins - This was the first horror-themed game I ever played and it was hard as hell. I loved the NES version, too, though the sprites would flicker in certain areas.

6. Joust - This game seems ageless because it's just as fun now as it was when I first played it. The NES version was a pretty good port and I have a somewhat rare Atari Lynx cartridge of it too. It was my first experience with a physics-based game.

7. Space Invaders - This is the oldest game that I enjoy. I loved it so much that I created a paper collage in high school art class that recreated the game screen with color gradients.

8. Arkanoid - You could find a lot of cocktail cabinet versions of this game. It's my favorite Breakout-type game, though I wasn't able to beat it until I bought the NES version.

9. Tetris - This is still my favorite puzzle game of all time. I played it all the time in the arcades, but the Game Boy version was also fantastic. Yep, I got the space shuttle ending.

10. Centipede - My aunt was really good at the game so she told me about it. I was maybe in preschool when I first played it and I remember my dad having to hold me up to reach the controls. It's still really great on MAME though I wish I had a trackball input.

Sorry that this is so long. I love a lot of arcade games and it's hard to narrow down my all-time favorites.

Figured I would ask here as opposed to /v/ as this is sort of a retro question.

I picked up the 8bit Music Power and I'm trying to play it on my famicom, but having no luck getting it to start up. Has anyone else happened to buy this game too and has gotten it to work? Or could I just be stuck with a fancy piece of plastic?

Some months ago, I bought a second-hand GameBoy (DMG). I tested it in the pawn shop, and it worked.

For anyone knowledgeable about NES/ Famicom tech

Can anyone tell me about mods for an NES side loader to enable the Famicom exclusive sound channels?

I bought a Duck Hunt with a built in converter and intend to use it for Akumajou Densetsu when I find it, but I also intend to buy an Everdrive for FDS exclusive games like pic related.

My questions are:

1. Can you restore the Disk System exclusive synth (as in that weird sawtooth "Oboe" sounding synth in the Japanese version of Kid Icarus) for an Everdrive? I know you can restore shit like the VRC7, but what about the FDS only sound?

2. Will performing the Everdrive mod and the converter mod simultaneously cause any crazy interference when both are used at once or blow my NES tha' fuck up?

USB Controllers

Hey /vr/, I recently picked up this controller for my computer, but the D-Pad isn't very good.

I can use it, but it makes my thumb really sore after a few hours since it requires so much pressure to use, as well as being one of those garbage pads that slides around in the controller.

What are some good USB controllers without garbage D-Pads?

O Inezh, where art thou?

The identity of "Inezh," portraying actress of Jill Valentine in the first Resident Evil game, remains an unsolved mystery among veteran Resident Evil fans. Officially, she was a high school exchange student with no prior acting experience. Mikami regretted having her on board once production started the shoot at the Tama River. "Inezh" frequently complained about the mosquitos and insisted on wrapping things up ahead of schedule. No one knows where she is now, but I'd be mighty interested to hear her reflect on her experience and, moreover, her side of the story.

Contrary to misinformation courtesy of IMDb, Irish actress Una Kavanagh did not portray Jill and, when asked, curtly denies any connection to the game. The two actresses don't bear a close resemblance.

Hiroki Kikuta / Koudelka

Hey /vr/. I just finished beating Koudelka and seeing each of the endings. Despite the state in which it released and the issues within Sacnoth that produced it, Koudelka's a great game. It's worth playing for those that enjoy truly dark games and RPGs, though it plods along because of the crippled battle system, and it should've been Kikuta's magnum opus.

Anyways, I'm here not just to talk about Koudelka and what could've been, but also because I'm looking for something from Kikuta's discography: The Lost Files. Right now YouTube user whitenoisemonster666 has about half of the songs uploaded, but I can't find the rest anywhere else.

Here's the full tracklist, of which about only 8 or 9 are on YouTube: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Files

don't understand how someone can be a retro gamer and be born after 1995. People born in 1996 like to claim they "grew up with" the N64 but they didn't, their first console was probably as PS2.

I'm 26 years old. So I was a teenager not too long ago, but honestly, my generation seemed A LOT more interested in actually play just good games instead of you Gen Z kids born after 1995 who only want to play the "cool" games like COD, Madden, FIFA, LOL, DOTA 2, and GTA 5. Hilarious how the teenagers playing these games are all hipster idiots who need to constantly rub in the fact that they're liberals.

It's weird, but if you look at those "Teens React" videos (particularly the Smash Bros. one), you'll see that the 1996 and up generation just doesn't know anything about classic 90s video games, anime, music, movies, or TV shows.

Heck, they don't even know early 2000s classics. Why is that? Shouldn't a 19-year-old remember shit from 2000-2005?

Shameless board shilling

Hey, everyone. (Yes, I'm still here, it's just that real life has kept me from checking in as often as before.)

I've gotten tired of /v/'s slow slide into a 4chan-tier shithole and have started my own video games board with the intention of getting away from the redditors and other retards that are most directly responsible for /v/ and 8chan in general declining in post quality.

>>>/summerv/

It's pretty dead right now, but that's because I haven't been advertising it for the most part. Don't be intimidated by the huge rules sticky, the intention is that they all boil down to "Don't be a faggot or a retard." I just tried to make the definition of being a faggot and/or retard very specific to minimize line-toeing and metafaggotry on both sides of the banhammer.

Hopefully this board will become as comfy as /vr/ is with time.

Honestly this is the best JRPG from the SNES era that nobody played. It was initially to be localized but never released outside of Japan. A shame too as I could have seen it considered up there with the likes of FF6 and CT.

It's fan translation by Gideon Zhi of AGTP has only recently received it's final revision, I feel that if it were fully translated in the late 1990s like FFV was it would've been regarded as something of a cult classic.

Nomination for early Retro status

This game was the bomb.

Too tired today to make a convincing argument for it being counted as a retro game, but I think that discussion on the topic might be good.

Maybe we start counting it once the 3DS successor comes out or something.

You ever buy a used VMU or memory card and look through the files on it to see what the previous owner played, or if he's got any stuff like custom maps or unlocked content lying on there?

I find it pretty interesting, though I definitely wouldn't go out and purchase a random card simply to see what's on it. I had to purchase a VMU recently, and checked out what was already on it. Found a replay file for Capcom vs SNK and I feel compelled to watch it.

Games /vr/ tricked you into playing

Very over hyped. The rpg aspects are underwhelming, as are the shooting aspects. Together they blend to create the ultimate mediocrity.

Listening to a million audiotapes and hacking crap gets old very quickly. It was probably good at release time but today, it doesn't hold up at all.

Anyone else hoping they combine Quest 64 and Quest: Brian's Journey, then remake it?

Brian's Journey had the story, cutscenes, and completed areas. Quest 64 had the graphics and music. A remake would be glorious.

Best Scary Console Game

Hello Everyone, October is upon us and as we get older it gets more difficult to get into the Halloween spirit. So I thought it might help my girlfriend and I if we play a scaaaary retro game for the next month.

Castlevania Bloodlines (GEN)

Castlevania SotN (PSX)

Essential PS1 games

Hey guys, i was recently cleaning my closet and found my old ps1 along with a bunch of pirated cds circa 1999-2000, the memory card didn't work for shit and some cds were all fucked up but i managed to find some that were working, now im sitting here with 4 games and a working ps1 with a modchip.

What are some essential ps1 games to have? I have a lots of 700mb disks i can burn.

Also, the only working games i have are tony hawk 1 & 2, rayman 2 and worms armageddon, out of like, 40 something games.

I know tomb raider, spyro, crash, FFVII, medievil, megaman legends and the tronn bone game are musts, but, what else?

R.O.B. Troubleshoot

/vr/, does anyone have experience with R.O.B.? I just picked this up from my local game store and I'm having a few issues trying to get him to work. He turns on and spins and such, but he just turns one way and keeps trying to go that way. It seems like opening him up there is the motor to spin him, and it just keeps spinning in the same direction.

I'm not sure if it is something I'm doing wrong with setting him up, or it is just a faulty motor and there isn't anything to do about it. Any tips or help with what I might be able to do?

CLASSIC POKEMON THREAD

This is a thread dedicated to Pokemon Gens 1+2. This isn't about any Generation beyond those, but nor is it a Gen Wars thread, so please keep focused on just these two generations.

First thing, why is Pokemon Stadium 1/2 so underrated? It feels like a great companion to have with the games. I have all 3 and I enjoy how convenient they make the games. People like to complain about how they're boring with just battling, but for me that's fine, since in R/B/Y you could run out of trainers to fight since the only characters you can rematch are the Elite 4, not to mention it has so many incentives and awards, like Pokemon and a Surfing Pikachu.

Lately I've been using it to try and complete all 6 games (R/B/Y/G/S/C) and get 251, with the only glitches used being the Mew and Celebi glitches, for obvious reasons.

Reviving old mods/old multiplayer games

Are there any communities specifically for reviving and enjoying old dead mods? Hosting servers and encouraging people, setting up community events to enjoy the nearly forgotten hard work?

There are too many awesome, unique mods out there with no one to play them, or no servers up. Some of my favorite gaming experiences have been setting up local servers and 1v1ing my friend on weird old HL1 and HL2 mods, like Train Hunter or Earth's Special Forces or Zombie Master. These are some of my favorite games of all time, and unfortunately its near impossible to enjoy them as they are meant to be played nowadays.

The same goes for old ass multiplayer games that don't have a community anymore, either. Things like Majesty or other LAN games.

Please let me know if you guys know any communities that celebrate the heritage of modding, and in appreciating the thousands of hours people labored over unique experiences that not enough people got to enjoy.

Or if you guys are interested in such a thing. I think a place to share and kickstart communities again would be fantastic.

/vr/ Gauntlet Thread

Start at NES, and work through in the following order:
NES
SNES
GB/GBC
Megadrive/Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
GBA
Commodore 64
Playstation 1

You have three days to complete the game without assistance (each game gets three days, though RPGs are allowed a week due to length).

If you fail a game, go back to the previous tier.

Select your system here:

http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html

You can also do it manually if you don't trust the random number generator:

http://s3kr.it/systems/

Rules:
1) Savestates are allowed ONLY for the purpose of taking screenshots and ONLY if your emulator/game in question does not have a pause function.
2) Rerolls are allowed under the following conditions:
-The game you get requires some sort of hardware functionality that cannot be accurately emulated to complete (eg, Boktai)
-The game would otherwise require cheats, hacks, or alteration of the software to complete due to a bug (eg, Cheetahmen II)
For games that have a high score or no end, the rule is
>if no high score has been established, set a goal and beat it
>if you're playing something another anon already has a high score on, beat their high score
>if you are playing extended rpgs/pokemon/whatever you get a week (Depending on the game: needs to be asked in thread)

-Try not to spam screenshots of every little thing.

So, I'm trying to build a decent collection of Saturn games and it has come to my attention that both PAL and NTSC Japanese games the other region doesn't have.

From what I've researched the US has:

Iron Storm
Magic Knight Rayearth
Albert Odyssey
Astal

Europe has:
Deep Fear
Keio 2 Flying Squadron
Dragoball Z The Legend
King of Fighters 94

Any other games I should know? I'd rather collect games in a language I understand instead of importing straight from Japan. Speaking of which, are Astal, Magic Knight and Albert Odyssey good?

Hey /vr/.

I'm searching for the game Golden Land – an isometric russian RPG from 2003 similar to the original fallouts.

I played it years back (it was translated to my language) and had a great time. Now, I'd like to introduce some of my English friends to it, but not only can't I find any place to pirate or buy it, I can't even find out whether it was translated to english or not (supposedly, it wasn't as far as in 2010, yet some sites list it as having an english translation).

Would any of you happen to know where to get that game?

I know you guys hate Apple and everything they've become, and enjoy shitting on the idea of "Mac gaming"? But is it true that Apple used to be worth a shit? FUCKING GAMESTOP coming for your retro games

>According to GameStop representatives, the company, starting on April 25th, will begin selling retro consoles, games and accessories in New York City and Birmingham, Alabama. The included stores will also start accepting retro products for trade-ins. Customers interested in taking advantage of that will be able to bring in their systems, games and accessories for the NES, Super NES, Sega Genesis, PlayStation, Nintendo 64 and Sega Dreamcast. The new stock should increase the number of games sold by the retailer by "about 5000." GameStop affirmed that its retro consoles should "have the same warranty as current used and refurbished consoles." About 250 stores will be included in the launch and in-store purchases will be limited to the retailer's web-in-store system. Online purchases will also be eligible for ship-to-store options.

Arrite, so it's dawned on me after playing Mother 1 through WiiU's virtual console that when compared to the Wii's emulation of NES games, the WiiU emulates NES games like garbage. Even when hooked up to a CRT, the colors are muddy and the aspect ratio is royally fucked.

That's what I gathered from face value. Anyone else here who's experienced with WiiU Virtual Console able to go in some more exact detail about the WiiU's NES emulation?

I used to play the shit out of this game and it remains as my favorite. Compared to games like Final Fight and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs this stood out for me. I heard the GameCube's component output is way better than the Wii's. Is there any truth to this or is it just a myth spread by resellers to hype collecting into spending over $100 on overpriced cables?

Jurassic Park

With Jurassic World coming up, I thought I'd look into the various games of the series. Apparently the NES and SNES games were the first released. Should I play the NES, then the SNES one? Or is the NES game just an inferior version of the SNES one? Or are they both just inferior versions of the later DOS/Amiga game?

Wikipedia:
>a version of Jurassic Park was released for PC:DOS and Amiga, which incorporated some isometric and first-person shooter gameplay, with notably improved resolution and artwork compared to the console versions.

Wikia:
>The story of the [DOS] game is basically the same as the NES and SNES version, however, the gameplay was quiet different. Like the SNES version, the game includes a 3D first-person shooter segment, but much more advanced than the one seen in the SNES.

Youtube comment:
>Wow, never saw this DOS game before but it's like they took ALL of the bad from the NES & SNES version and put it into this. The bland mapping and bland music makes this version very lame compared to others.

Maybe I shouldn't hope for a definitive answer. General JP thread, I guess.

/vr/ what am I doing wrong? I just picked up the ColecoVision today and grabbed Mouse Trap just to test it out and make sure everything works.

But the game doesn't seem to fit into the system, and I now honestly have no clue what cartridges do fit. It looks like the connector pins on the cartridge are bigger than what the ColecoVision accepts. What am I actually missing here, I can't figure this out.

How do we make a successful arcade in the modern age?

Go.

R: 0 / I: 0 / P: 13

I find it interesting how 1500 copies of this game, which wasn't even finished, were just found in a warehouse and then put on the market. Not only did Active Enterprises not even finish development but they actually put the unfinished product onto hundreds and hundreds of cartridges with the intent to distribute them… or did they? Maybe it was a skeleton in their closet, a symbol of their failure as a company and their blind hope in what they'd started. Personal pride on a PCB in a clear case.

>This… is who we are. This is what our work amounts to. Everything we've worked towards. No use denying it any longer.

It was at that moment that a mind clouded with delusions was cleared. They could've done all kinds of manners of things with these. Burn them. Bury them. Waterlog them. But that would be just as immature and proud. Or, they could embrace this personal demon and sell them as intended. But isn't that what got them thinking in the first place? Make no mistake, there was no right answer as to what to do with these and like hell it would be easy deciding. But perhaps keeping that shipment safe in a warehouse was the path of least resistance and the least of multiple evils.

I'm sorry you had to read that but, I must ask: what other manners of fresh hell are just waiting in hiding in the retro video game world?

The World/concept flip from Quake 1 to 2

So, slight rant here and I don't post here as often as I should anyway.

So I finally got around to getting the quake collection on steam and played through all of the original quake's content. A really interesting fantasy/sci-fi combination with all this different "worlds" that I'm guessing are just different regions on the world of Quake. I can't remember them all but the Netherworld is basically just medieval hell and the Elder World is the super-tech based place. There was all this magic and rune stuff in it as well. I spend so much time as I am a writer imagining all the potential that a modern Quake like this would have. (call me a fag or something, but I hope to one day work for id as a writer/level designer/concept creator) So why did the Quakes after just do a 360 and turn into what could be summed up as Dark Halo?

>It is not a direct sequel to Quake; it merely uses the name of the former game due to id's difficulties in coming up with alternative names

Seriously? Can you guys confirm this? I love id and actually enjoy quakes 2-4, as they are great games on their own. But as the series that imposed as Quake, not the Quake quickly killed off by something as simple as not being able to come up with a name. These games could have existed as their own series and that wouldn't have halted the dark fantasy/sci-fi Quake that in my opinion was far more interesting. I mean, sure, in the original quake you are basically killing all the magic through Armagon and what not, but that's literally the only excuse it has. Quake 2 isn't even in the same universe. The only thing that transferred over is the name. Id has a theme of one word titles with some hard sounds in it right? Why not call everything from quake 2 onward something like "Scourge" or "Bedevil?"

Just some thoughts I had. I really hope that after id fixes themselves with the new Doom, that sometime down the line they do what they are doing to DOOM, and create a prequel to the first quake and really get in depth with this world stuff.

Whats a good adapter for Genesis, NES, SNES, give or take to USB?

I have some Genesis controllers I need to test and might use with old games aswell as I would like to be able to test old controllers I get for fixing/messing with.

Also if anyone can tell me what diodes are on the PS1 power supply primarily the one on D101 I would be gratefull as I don't really know how to tell them apart. THe one on D101 on a PS1 Im messing with has quite a bit of corrosion on it to the point I might replace it if I can find a replacement part for cheap.

Also the same PS1 dousn't want to read discs so I was wondering if you guys know about this (http://dogbreath.de/PS1/LaserAlignment/Laser.html) I don't know how reliable this tut is and wondering if anyone has tried to follow it before. I might have bumped a potentionometer when I was reassembling it. I did read that the PSOne uses a compatible drive so that maybe my best bet if the tut no workie.

No Continues

What do you think about games with No Continues? For me, it was a fucking lazy Dick Ploy to sell a short game at full price, and all it does in the term of challenge is making you play the first level over and over and over until you can play it with your eyes closed, defeating the purpose of challenge because you basically memorized the game at that point. I can forgive No Passwords because maybe the game is so fucking old they didn't even invent Passwords yet, but Continues existed since SMB, so there are no excuses.

Why do people still enjoy the original boxy design of the NES, rather than the top-loading model that came years later?
From a technical standpoint, the box NES was a mess that deliberately bent the ends of your connectors, the lock-out chip was poorly thought-out, and it took up far more space than its contemporaries.
The only reason it was designed like that in the first place was so that people would liken it to a low-budget VCR than a game console.

Great video game movies

I remember when I was growing up how much I wished this to be real. Some secret organization using arcade games as a testing mechanism to find the best and most skilled in the world.

Are there any RGBHV (VGA) to YPbPr (Component) transcoders I can get for cheap? I'm looking for a transcoder, not a converter.

Transcoders have no scaling, and no input lag, whereas converters have both of those problems.

I'm can also make one myself, as I'm fairly good at soldering, but I can't find the chips that the schematics call for. I'd prefer a premade solution though.

Not that I will have kids soon, but Im starting to worry. With how much video games are changing Im worried that they would only want to play new games and phone apps. Having not grown up with retro games and seeing video games evolve makes me worry they might not be as interested.

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions? My thought is just if I am playing retro stuff a lot, they will want to join in too.

Need some help with a GameCube mod

So recently, I found out what the fuck was wrong with my old GameCube - I managed to get it booting, it's working except for the Disc Drive (which I know how to fix it)

So - I was thinking about how I already know how to Solder, and how there is tons of documentation of the GC motherboard - and I came to a thought. I COULD fix up the ol' GameCube and play her like I used to, but then I realized that I have all the skills and documentation I need to attempt a portable GameCube project. The only problem is my 'cube is IPL 1.0, which Wiikey doesn't easily support apparently.

So, /vr/ - if I were to go about modding my GameCube in such a way, what would be the best method of enabling backup loading on an IPL 1.0 board? The main reason I want to do this is to have my GameCube that I played while growing up with me at all times, so even though I could buy a 1.1 board I don't want to.

Ok I tried posting this in /vr/ back in August, but the thread was deleted.

Basically tl;dr, I'm on the fence about hosting a retro vidya tournament next year due to the poor performance of the one they had at Gen Con this year.

In it, we played on an emulator, and a projector, while the guy running it looked at porn.

Things such as lag spikes and poor connections were both issues, and some complaining about the projector, there was well, not many good comments about the event.

During and after the event, I spoke to many people either spectating or playing the event, and decided with my collection, I should save up some jewgold, and host a tournament next year.

Idea's I've had for tournament

>CRT's. Between the several laying around my house, and the few I'm sure I can get, I could have a number of consoles hooked up to play various systems.

>Game Genie/shark

One of the big excuses was the comment that "an emulator gives you the freedom to pick any level you want!"

Well so does a fucking Game Genie.

>Champions tournament on Sunday

The idea that throughout Gen Con a number of tournaments, the winner would be allowed to enter the "Champions Gauntlet" where the winner will be offered a rare prize. (atm my older brother owns a cib Spider Man: Web of Fire, which I think might be a good prize).

been replaying the original two Golden Sun games on my GBA and I realized that while they have their flaws (way too much dialogue for how little it says for example), I still greatly enjoy it, especially the Djinn class system

it's really fun being able to change around my characters classes at any given moment, I can always change it around again if it turns out to be not to my liking, and I also like how it depends on finding and collecting those little critters to gain more and stronger options. sure there's still grinding in GS but the Djinni still matter more. not to mention summons which are hella strong but getting them ready really weakens the stats and can completely mess up the classes

so hey, anyone can recommend me RPGs with a similar system? I'm mostly talking about collecting stuff that greatly alters your characters' abilities and/or roles and is not permanent
