The TV-N Northern Trip eps

>What you you remember about the "state" of the fanbase and the fansubs at that time?

It was a bit more obscure, and there weren't as many subs available.

EP: Go! By Train
Live challenge: Lemmings 24h
Travel special: Southernmost Trip (so cozy)

>Which episode (or other thing) introduced you to GCCX?

Well, I first became aware of it browsing the SA forums when bored one night (the paywall wasn't up at the time, I still have my $10). I think I downloaded an episode but never got around the watching it until a few months later when I was watching something about Sonic the Hedgehog on Youtube for some reason and saw the GCCX episode on the recommended videos sidebar. On a whim I clicked over and have been a fan ever since.

>What you you remember about the "state" of the fanbase and the fansubs at that time?

It wasn't as big as it is now, but was rapidly growing in momentum.

>What's your favourite standard episode(s), live challenge, and travel special?

Standard: Tokimeki Memorial
Live: I like the clips of The Quest of Ki, though I have no doubt I'd feel different if I had to sit through the whole thing
Travel Special: Cambodia

Nearest Arcade: For now it'd be quite some way to the nearest proper arcade (though here in Britbongland we have fruit machine parlours in most high streets), but I'll be moving near the sea next month so it'll closer then.

It was a fun episode, maybe a little bit repetitive due to the nature of the game but still good.

I was kind of disappointed when he gave himself 10 credits because I thought it looked like he might be able to do it before that. Then he fucked it up anyway and I realised how wrong I was.

I'm constantly impressed at his puzzle skills though. I tried the game myself and was absolutely shit at that shape math thing that he was so good at.

>Which episode (or other thing) introduced you to GCCX?
Somehow, I got into GCCX while trawling for Gaki no Tsukai torrents.

>What you you remember about the "state" of the fanbase and the fansubs at that time?

I torrented that shit around the time the 100th episode was up - the fuck I have time for that "community drama" bullshit.

>What's your favourite standard episode(s), live challenge, and travel special?

EP: Anything involving Ninja Gaiden, because I personally struggled with those games and appreciated the kacho's efforts
Live challenge: Quest of Ki, because the feeling of community, rather than spectacle, was palpable/
Travel special: Korea, because of the awkwardness of the "holy fuck these other chinks are crazy" attitude in the retro stores; the awkwardness in the interviews in the Starcraft gulags; and that casino-to-instant ramen ending.

>If the Kacho came to your doorstep and wanted to visit the nearest 'arcade', how far would he need to go?

I live in a pretty quiet area of Glorious Nippon, and while I'm sure we could throw down some Kyary Pamyu Pamyu remixes on Taiko no Tatsujin, actual retro stuff that aren't fighters might be harder to come by.

Even the actual arcades barely have games in anymore. Everyone in Britain seems addicted to gambling so it's all slot machines, crane games and whatnot with maybe one or two driving/dance games. On the offchance you do find some retro games they're usually in a depressing state of repair.

There used to be arcade machines in taxi offices, takeaways and such but they found it was more profitable to have a slot machine. Then the government banned gambling in places like that, so now we have nothing.

You do occasionally see one (and only one) in a movie theatre though, yeah.

About the oldest cab you'll be lucky to find is an Outrun 2 (not even 2SP. Just 2. They rarely bothered to buy the upgrade kit) or a Dancing Stage (IE - something pre-DDR) cab in barely-working condition. Other than that, it's all slot machines, or those fucking stupid touch-screen "pub quiz" things that exist solely to rob your money with poorly calibrated touch screens and shitty adaptations of TV game shows.

Like >>1214 says, we're a nation of gambling addicts, and every pub, cinema, bowling alley and venue legally allowed to have one will have at least one slot machine, if not more.

I can remember when my local chippy had a Donkey Kong cabinet. I wasted so many 10ps in that thing, probably enough to just buy a NES and the game, even with the massively overinflated UK price of the thing. Then they replaced it with a slot machine and I stopped going in. Now it's shut down, and has been for a good few years.

You know a game isn't going to take any shit when the FIRST BOSS has three forms!

Broadly speaking, I think NES games with infinite continues make for the best GCCX episodes. They've got enough tough bits (and sometimes flatout bullshit) to make for a good challenge, but Arino doesn't have to waste half his time going back through stuff he's done before.

Small bit of knowledge from the release thread - It takes about 4-6 weeks from when a translator submits their script to complete and release an episode, unless there's urgency in getting one translated right after its TV broadcast (Battletoads, PaRappa, Yoshi's Island).

zari-gani, primary translator since the early days, does not anticipate having time to translate more episodes until April. It'll be May / June before more of her episodes are released.
Kakaricho, former translator for the halfchan /vr/ group, expects to have a translation done this week or next week. If so, his episodes won't release until late April / early June.

Either way, expect things to be quiet for a month or so.

 No.1953

>once you lose a life (and thus your powerups).
I noticed that in the episode: Arino basically waiting to kill himself because he couldn't win against the bosses without the power-ups. I can see why they did it but it did backfire, I think, at least when it came to the bosses.

>>1950
Thanks for the information.

I still haven't caught up on all of the episodes that are currently out anyway. Though some I'm avoiding because I want to play the games first myself (just finding the time for it all).

 No.1959

>>1953
It's not to bad with the actual weapons - you only lose one upgrade per life and can get pretty overpowered - but losing ALL of your life upgrades is what really fucks you over. I really think the game would be vastly improved if they'd given the player a bit more default energy.

 No.1966

Thanks! I was wondering, do the translated episodes include the interviews with the company execs and devs, or do they only really do the game parts? Some of the videos I've found only do the games, but I find the interviews to be interesting, and the dev stories to be touching at times, but sometimes the videos cut those parts out completely.

Depends on the subbing group.

If http://www.sa-gccx.com/episode-guide has "TV-Nihon" as the listed group on a [CX] episode, then it's going to skim the company tour and developer interview (with poor translation as a bonus; pic related)

Unfortunately yes. For a brief while they licensed some episodes.

Their treatment of the show was exactly as well regarded as you would expect. (Poorly dubbed narration by a man who pronounced "Abe" wrongly being just one of the problems).

Thankfully all the episodes they had the rights to have since been fully subbed and released on the DVD.

Oh, in case you're not aware they stopped doing the developer interviews after the first season (with one exception) so all episodes after that are complete, regardless of the translation team.

After six weeks with no updates, people asked the subbing group about the current state of their release schedule. Here's what we know:

# Lead translator ZG has finished three full episode translations, and is working on a fourth "that's been in draft mode for a while".

# Timing the subtitles is currently causing a bottleneck in the whole release process. They'll probably get a few ready, then release them back-to-back.

# At least one of the translations done / in-progress is a [CX] (season 'zero') episode.

# Kakaricho hasn't talked about translations for older episodes, but he does still post summaries of brand-new episodes and current events.

# Recent uploads to Nintendo's official YouTube channel will probably not take priority over the in-progress stuff mentioned above; video (unfortunately) related.

The episode list in the OP shows every challenge game and every system. You can ctrl+f the tags from the key to hop around. It's really handy.

What episode is this from?

Also, if possible, I would like to know from which episodes the "This game looks like it's for girls! I bet it's easy." and "Damn the sun." ones are.

 No.3652

>>3651

That might be from Wagan Land.

And "Damn the sun" is likely Ninja Gaiden.

That pic is a line from the Last Continue song in the montage at the end of the documentary about Lemmings 24 hour.

The other two are Binary Land and Ninja Gaiden.

>That pic is a line from the Last Continue song in the montage at the end of the documentary about Lemmings 24 hour.

Correcting myself slightly, that exact shot is actually from the Lemmings segment compilation.

Could someone direct me to full episodes of season 1 please?

I found a torrent on nyaa.sa but it only has one seed and is going at 1kb/s. Everything else I can find contains the challenge only, and not the complete ep.

This doesn't seem to have all of season 1 there.

Have the full episodes just not been translated or something.

The episodes with just the challenge translated by TV-Nihon say [TV-N](c) and nothing else in the translation team column.

Not translated apparently. Too bad, the first three episodes were really interesting.

Hey what's the monitor Arino uses now and is it any good?

I can't help but notice how many different types of inputs it has, and I feel like something like that would be nice to have.

You can see it in this pic.

He's been using a Sharp Aquos monitor for several years. I don't know the model number or if it's any good.

Speaking of pervs gathered around a TV, the newest sub release is a dating sim / quiz game hybrid.

Awesome! I always love the quiz game episodes and my all-time favourite GCCX is still the Tokimeki Memorial one, so seeing a quiz/dating game hybrid is pretty much perfect for me.

I get that going through the same scenes again is boring but he should have stuck with Saki. It's a shame when he gets a bad ending.

He breezed through that. I figured it would be harder.

Judging from what we see in some episodes, not all that great, although this might be from other equipment used when recording I much doubt the LCD is much better. In the shubibinman episode I remember seeing deinterlacing artifacts (stuff that should be blinking appearing as blindfolds, etc.)

I wish that game had been released stateside. I love those kind of odd niche games.
