That only works when the new population comes from your population stock
Besides the irish example I would name the south-west united states: that land was all spain's and then mexico's, and the population there was heavily hispanic. Before the US-mexico was you had manifest destiny which was basically a scheme to get as many anglo/north-european to the area as possible in order to out-breed the hispanics (mostly southern europeans and native mexicans) out of the area, which is why the native population of the area which was technically mexico didn't rebel when under US rule, because they were mostly non-hispanics
If western-european leaders wanted to do this they would be much better off letting russians in. The average russian would sell his soul to the labor party, the greens, the socialist and any other party that gives them a EU passport.
The muslims they are letting in don't care about these liberal parties, in fact the favorite party for sweden muslims' is SD, a party most white swedes consider "extreme right" and "anti immigrant"
If anything the current immigration crisis in europe shows you what happens to a political class that lives so isolated they lose any connection with reality. A good parallel is the soviet leadership which lived such sheltered lives that they didn't see the looming economic problems and stagnation that ended up destroying the USSR. You had people like gorbachev who were so fucking oblivious to everything going on that when the berlin wall protests happened he gave no orders because he couldn't believe what was happening, so a bunch of unarmed germans were able to break the wall using hammers while soviet soldier just stood there watching
