Thanks for bringing this up. I sat for months as seemingly ALL of my friends prepared for the new Fallout to release. Having never played the previous iterations, I didn't really know what the appeal was but knew that whatever it was was strong. My friends sort of seemed like zombies, "The game will come out and I will play it." That is all there was to it. It came out and they played it.
So I started watching my roommate play on his new 66" TV (bought for sports and video gaming) through his new computer specifically built to play this new game, using his new cell phone that he bought specifically to be compatible with the new Pip Boy to be obtained through pre-release. In other words, he spent a lot of money to make sure his experience would be perfect when the game finally released.
I was indeed suspicious since I browse this board for a reason, I figured there could be some strong messaging put into these game. Maybe they are just well made, but maybe people feel good when they play them.
He studied the new perks tree to see all the skills, how it matched with what he wanted and I was searching for messages. I am still in the process of piecing together the strong appeal of this game but one thing I have noticed are two themes, not unique to this game, but well-executed herein apparently:
There is an overarching juxtaposition of two things "traditionally" considered to be detrimental to a stable society, ultraviolence (as in Clockwork Orange style) and hypersexuality (as in Miley Cyrus style). These two themes are coupled with a sense of joviality and lightheartedness. The impression that it's all quite cute and fun to watch the blood gush from someone's neck. The sex is heavily pushed in the music (borrowing from the 1950s and peppering in new recordings) feature lyrics like:
>There'll be fifteen minutes of kissin'
>Then you'll holler "Please don't stop" (Don't stop!)
>There'll be fifteen minutes of teasin'
>Fifteen minutes of squeezin'
>And fifteen minutes of blowin' my top
Yes, it's supposed to be funny. It's supposed to be normal. That is what they tell you when you ask about it.
I'll be watching this thread and the gameplay.
