Besides the irony of gawker having a blog to check if news are factual (pot calling the kettle....) its amazing how many news are just plain blatant lies with poorly photoshopped pictures and how hard is to stop them from spreading.

This reminds me of the recent shootings in the USA where all blogs rushed to say it was 3 white men in military gear who did and continued to say it even a day after it was proved they were a muslim man and his pakistani muslim wife. Then they proceeded to say the couple had nothing to do with ISIS even though now the FBI has confirmed there is a strong connection.

The reason why I mention this last case is because it shows the risk that fake news can trigger a massive domino effect when there is literally no interest at all to have check any facts and the news being reported are not trivial filler but the kind of stuff that could trigger a war.

Tell me friend, are you familiar with the Spanish-American war?

Yes, ironically that happened during a context where news had degenerated to merely a 'business of attention span' not unlike blogs today

Back then newspapers had to compete for attention on the streets so it was all about manufacturing news with big outrageous headlines, after all who cares if its a lie? they already paid for the newspaper and thats all the people printing them cared about

Same with blogs today, its all about getting people's attention and get them to click so they go to another page and see another set of ads. Who cares if the news are fake? they already saw the ads so the blog gets paid
