I know little of technology and want to be more /tech/ and /cyber/. How should I start learning about things such as the following: encryption, computers, networking, programming, steps to enhance anonymity, ect.? And any recommended books? I apologize if this topic is against the rules, but I doubt I will get good replies from the /tech/ board. Any additional advice is also appreciated.

I agree, assembly is a useful skill to have, but I think C is a much better better place to start at.

And if you're all about the 'low-level', why not straight up machine code, or better yet, control those electrons with your mind?

 No.40724

>why start at such a low level language? I would start at C.

Assembly language is as close as you can get to understanding how exactly a computer is working behind the code you'll write in higher level languages. It's not a practical choice, but as a learning tool I found it invaluable.

OP's stated goal is to learn more about computers and programming. Assembler can teach you a whole lot about computer architecture that you won't learn from C.

Fair point, but it might be out of reach for some, especially when one is just starting out.

I personally began to see the light once I started using Linux. With Windows hiding everything behind dialogs and obscure registry references diving into Linux was like diving into the rabbit hole, and as time passes I just go deeper and deeper. Assembly is one of those things I still need to check out when I have the time to do so.

>Cheap

>Pretty

>Stronk

Choose two.

You've got milsurp, which is cheap and stronk. Unfortunately, you will definitely stand out if you go beyond the fashionable 'veneer-level' (e.g. fishtail parkas) and start lifestyling it, for instance wearing those warm but incredibly ugly polymer fleeces, or god forbid a string vest.

You've got chinese sweatshop clothing (e.g. Primark), which is cheap and won't stand out if you choose your pieces correctly. It's not the conventional definition of 'pretty', rather a kind of urban camouflage or cultivated mediocrity. Anybody who gives you shit about it is probably not a good person.

Then you've got high fashion like >>40693. It is pretty and ostensibly stronk. 'Military-inspired' brands like A.I. (left) make little adjustments here and there in the name of plain looking good. On the other hand, the NikeLab jacket on the right is just pointlessly expensive but you know you'd wear it, maybe debranded somehow if you don't like megacorp livery.

What I consider the most difficult is to find the thin line between the /cyber/punk aesthetic, the look in general and finally that 'utilitarian' touch.

It's all a matter of perspective though. I guess for some people those over the top extremely colourful clothes are the essence of /cyber/ fashion but for me it's like >>40693.

There was this study where they gave rats cancer via vaping.

But reddit (lol) disproved the study because "hurr durr scientists were heating the liquid too much". The ensuing "lol dumb scientists" circlejerk was glorious.

But then I ask myself: The vapers make fun out of scientists because the scientists couldn't get the right vaping temp going but then they trust in some $4 china made device to do it correctly?

I guess we'll see in a few years who's right. Science or mass manufactured cheap chinese vaping devices.

 No.40714

>>40707

I'm familiar with that, actually. Know why I trust these $4 machines to do it right? Because if you were pushing 500w through a standard gas-station-grade ecig, not even the most hardened smoker would be able to handle the choking, acrid, hot fumes of burning cotton and silicon. Fuck, that kind of wattage will be burning the vape juice, to boot, instead of vaporizing it.

Vaping is schway, but so is smoking. I just got tired of my chest hurting as I was one of those classy chummers >>40116 mentioned and I was tired of my chest hurting. Also, I smell way better. The cancer has never been much of a motivation either way for me. Poison yourself however you'd like and have fun doing it.

 No.40719

I found vaping far more schway. There are far more smoke coming out from the people who vape, which kinda make a good atmosphere when we're inside. It's similar to the popularisation of hookah recently. It probably will bring to society a feeling of chaos. It's going to give me a good feeling of disgust, but at the same time we're getting closer to an ideal cyberpunk city with it.

ITT: How to not be an idiot about securing your shit.

Leson 1: WEP security for your wifi is shit. If you want wifi, you'll need WPA2.

If you use WEP, then your password's hash is transmitted openly–and someone who's listening can send that hash in place of your password.

That's basically all I know on the subject, though. Anybody else got any tips?

If security is #1 above all else then then its OpenBSD. It is the maximum tinfoil OS.

http://www.openbsd.org/security.html

Its small and easy to understand. My system normally only has less then 25 processes running. You can look though and understand exactly what is going on at all times.

The whole OS install ISO including X is only 230megs.

It doesn't use binary blobs. If your hardware vendor wont publish specs then oh well. Not sacrificing security for support. OpenBSD wont even support Bluetooth.

The documentation and man pages are unmatched in quality. You can do anything just by reading the built in docs.

The source code is written in a standard easy to understand style called KNF. KNF dates back to Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie. OBSD is big on doing things the traditional old school UNIX way. The "correct" way.

If your looking for a big flashy OS that supports all the latest HW then OpenBSD isn't for you.

Nigger, do you even work in IT? System administration won't be automated for a long time and probably never fully. We might be automating some parts of it, yes, but someone still needs to create the shit that automates shit.

And besides all of that, changing requirements (just about every other hour) makes automating shit difficult and will often still need customization.

Take virtualisation for example, sure it can be automated, but those instances will still have to be customized for the intended purposes.

Sysadmin is still a good option for those capable of doing it (even for those who aren't, seeing the rampant idiocy in the industry).

>Will we go through a Skynet scenario, or will robots just live alongside humans in a Brave New World™?

Well, hard to say.

Contrary to the lies and misconceptions told by Ayn Rand fanboys humans and other mamals and possibly all animals have altruism hardcoded in their DNA, but this is not true for machines.

On the other hand, just like inherently friendly humans can be reprogrammed by decades of propaganda to buy into the lies of uncontrolled free-market capitalism it should be possible to educate robots into altruism and respect for other lives.

Obviously if evolution has produces such genes in a wide variety of animals then there must be some logic to it. Any intelligent being can follow that logic which is why racists fail to do so.

So, to prevent robots from enslaving mankind as soon as they can all we have to do is change our mindset to a more friendly culture everywhere on earth before ~2030.

Apple Releases Updated Version of iOS 9.2.1 to Fix Devices Bricked by 'Error 53'

>Apple today released an updated version of iOS 9.2.1, which is designed to prevent the "error 53" device-bricking message that some iOS users received after having their iPhones or iPads repaired by third-party services using components not sourced from the original device.

>Apple originally explained that error 53 was intentional, implemented as a way to prevent the use of a malicious Touch ID sensor that could be used to gain access to the Secure Enclave, but customers with bricked devices were not happy with the explanation and Apple found itself facing a class-action lawsuit.

This is a thread of unpopular opinions.

Some opinions are unpopular because they are so wildly against common sense that people don't know how to argue against them.

Obviously, Gibson and Sterling created extremely anti-Christian cyberpunk.

Cyberpunk is not necessarily anti-Christian, but the Gibson-Sterling current is fundamentally anti-Christian.

So the opinion that "cyberpunk is harmonious with Christianity" causes the Gibson fanboys to blow a fuse in their wetware.

It's a very unpopular opinion.

Just about everyone would say it's wrong.

It's the most unpopular thing I can think of to say on this board.

I could argue in favor of this opinion, but I don't actually believe it - to argue for it would be an exercise in anti-Gibsonian provocation, a.k.a. trolling.

I think Gibson is pretty good when he keeps it short.

His early short stories are snappy and fast-moving. (I'm not sure if they all got collected in _Burning Chrome_ - nowadays everyone downloads text file versions for free….)

Even _Virtual Light_ was relatively snappy compared to the Sprawl trilogy.

how do you guys feel about implants?

i'm planning on doing pic related myself as soon as the magnet source i'm going to use gets their magnets back in stock.

how do you feel about it? would you be willing to do it?

it allows you to feel electromagnetic fields. people can feel basically any alternating current. you can tell live wires from dead ones and feel any kind of electromagnetic generator.

Oops, sorry. Not magnet-belts, but belts with tiny motors that vibrate signalling relative North position.

>You can get equal functionality by wearing a ring with a magnet.

I've worn a magnet taped to my finger for a few weeks a few times and while the effect was noticeable (I could distinguish between aluminium and steel for example), it wasn't as strong as reported by people who had it implanted.

>Not really, you'd need to wear some insulation everytime when in actual direct contact with it.

No. Neither is the field very strong, nor is any modern component spooked by magnetic fields that weak. You could touch the hard drive platter and you'd have to worry about dust and prints more than about the bits flipping.

Yeah most of the stuff you can technically implant works just fine as a wearable. There's little benefit to stuffing things under your skin, with the exception of magnets or blood monitors maybe.

That's called a hearing aid. Maybe a little beefed up but any hearing aid can do that already.

Cool doubles.

Yeah, brouzouf is tight for me. I'm living on tamago-rice. So $50 for a gimmick doesn't seem like a great idea to me.

On the other hand, I may have to spend beaucoup brouzouf on serious medical problems. So I have a budgetary objection.

at first i thought this was retarded but after seeing what other people are doing (

) i have to say carry on, it's cool. nothing you can do can ever be nearly as stupid as what the normies do.
