Old threads are dead so..

Thread for UMPCs like old eee's, Nokia900's and other devices.

I begin to shill for the Pyra. Costs estimated between 400 to 600€, but with the modular design a hardwareupdate of the SOC, RAM and storage can be made in under 100€ some time after the release. Schematics and case design files will be released with the device in ~Q1/Q2 2016.

Which devices do you use? And why?

 No.36397

I use a Blackberry with a full keyboard (and no SIM card/cellphone plan) as essentially a UMPC, although it doesn't really fit the specifications for the term.

Where can I find some of these? Or at least make one. I have a Raspberry Pi B 2.

Are there any modern manufacturers of cheap ARM UMPCs?

 No.36504

>>36463

>possible specs

This is actually what will be available.

It's going to use a qualcomm LTE modem, that's been decided

It's going to have two SDXC slots, so you can use 128GB SD cards

It does have SATA headers in one of the USB ports, although I might have incorrectly assumed that it will be eSATAp formfactor. Either way you can run a large hard drive at 6Gbps.

>>36441

cyberdeck and pyra are two different things. If your cyberdeck fits in your pocket it's too anemic for the title. Why not have both?

>>36491

Raspi is garbage-tier arm performance. Pyra is faster and not exactly cheap. Baddragon or whatever his name is happens to be the only modern manufacturer of UMPC hardware. You could give it a shot though. I recommend cutting off all the extra-long pins and ports so that your board is less bulky. Add the headers you want back on using more compact ports (like a folding ethernet port) once you have a proper case and keyboard.

 No.36515

>>36504

I'll stick with Pyra then. I can't wait to use it when it comes out. Carry that bitch around in my pocket and fuck with people.

 No.36517

>>36504

How much faster, though? If it's only 10% - 20% faster than a Pi B, what's the point of getting it?

I Google/DuckDuckGo'd it and can't find anything. Lame.

Baddragon sells dragon dildos friend.

You need an adapter to do that. There are no cheap USB-SATA combis out there so thei decided to use a USB3 port which actually is just USB 2 but the other lanes can be used with an adapter.

If you think a raspberry pi is a UMPC you're delirious. You'd need to add a keyboard, a monitor, LTE, a battery with a charging circuit; fit all that in a case and hope that it somehow fits in your pocket. Even if you were to start with a credit-card sized single board computer, the raspberry pi is a poor choice. You'd be better off with one of the many more powerful boards that cost roughly the same.

>how much faster is it

Read the specs, I'm not here to spoonfeed you.

 No.37371

The concept behind these is great, but I just, don't know how well they'd work in real life, especially considering the cost.

OP here, thanks for bumping

If you talk about the Pyra: it should work very well since the devs got much experience from the open pandora which was nice for the time too. And if you keep lurking the dev's news you will see how much affort and fixes are done.

If you talk about the GPD WIN it should be atleast okay, it is just not that advanced as the Pyra and non-modular, while having a x68 SOC on the pro-side.

The Pyra costs around 500-600€depending on your taxes. The GPD costs 500$ as implied on indiegogo.

>>40298

290€ is just part of the cost. you get a voucher for 290€ if you had preorderd it in addition with a signed nacked PCB as a bonus. (which is over already).

Pic related to the Pyra, soon the first prototype will be done once the last parts arrive. A cool news might be that the plastic will be a polycarbonate which is even used for bulletproof materials.

Just noticed side-spacebar on a keyboard, pretty neat.

Probably needs another fn key on the left side though.
