Why would Tox be preferable to OTR?

my question too.
I use Jabber+OTR for IM and why should I use Tox? I dont need a voicemessenger, I would only use it for textchats.

 No.9715

>>9709
decentralised

 No.9719

>>9715
Jabber is decentralised too. You pick a server where you want to make your account (you can host one for yourself) and as long this one server is online, you are available in jabber.

Many organisations who fight censorship and for the web are hosting servers. Like the Chaos Computer Club. Im still looking for a EFF server, they should have one too.

 No.9721

Also, Tox doesnt hide your Ip from the other chat partner by default (I hope you guys here realize that). Jabber or other XMPPs are still using servers to communicate, which means you only have to find a trustworthy server for your account and this problem is solved by default. Still you have to activate OTR tho.

 No.9722

>>9709
If I recall correctly OTR is actually one of the few forms of digital communication that the NSA currently can't decrypt. so that speaks in favour of OTR.

Like I said, if there is no trustworthy server, host your own one. It is decentralised because you can do that.

not per default. Its like saying a GPS phone cant be located because you turn GPS off.

 No.11676

>>11664
Torchat uses Tor. Therefore it's text-only and still pretty slow.
Tox doesn't use Tor. It's fast and has audio and video streaming. If you want anonymity you can use it over Tor and then it'll be slow but still better than Torchat for grandmas because the goal is bringing encryption to the masses.

 No.11679

i like vidya and movies.

 No.11681

>>11676
There is actually no difference for the "masses" if they have to download tor or tox. Its still a program one have to download. Plus in tox you have to do some sttings to archieve anonymity. Which is even less user-friendly.

If we talk about masses, We need a program which is widespread allready and put Tor or VPN in front of it and OTR atop of it.

>>11664
tox is peer to peer. That means it is less dependet on servers but everyone has your IP. You have to use additional plugins/programs to archive anonymity.

We've been inviting manually for the past little bit now, and the default channel is already in use. We shouldn't just storm in there.
I've been working on the bot all night and she's a little… quirky, but I should be ready to have her go live and ready by tomorrow sometime.

There has been a good amount of traffic through here. I counted about 8 or 9 active users in all throughout the day, which ain't bad for one day on a slow board. I figure once I get the bot right for auto invites people will get on and stay since there's a reason to.

We'll update tomorrow.

Decided to put a little info about me first lol like everyone else.

-hobbyist programmer. I one day hope to develop for the Linux Kernel (idgaf which version, I just want in on that beauty)

-taking a gap year from finishing high school

-like some anons here, I do like using drugs. They really open your mind and allow you to think freely

-I'm heavily into DIY body mods and medicine. I inserted a neodymium magnet in my finger to sense magnetic fields. However after a sharp rejection I had to cut it back out. I intend to get an RFID chip inserted into my hand (by none other than myself)

-I'm really huge on the subject of human experimentation, I just love the forbidden fruit. While I haven't done anything to anyone (per se) I'd love to do a study where it involved it one day. We learn more from experiments that are unethical than from most that are.

-Love electronic/industrial/black metal/dubstep/etc music

-One day I have ambitions to open a pod hotel in Victoria, Australia (where I live).

I don't see why it would be. He hosts from home, it's his personal IP.

If it is I could do simple floods to fuck with his speed. I could port scan for vulnerable software to try and fuck with his server. I could even find out the address associated with the IP depending on the ISP. Shit, he is probably already on a list somewhere for being associated with this data.

Granted in theory something bad could happen. But really, who cares? It's a lot more effort than he's worth.

But muh autism and anxiety ;__; But I'll try in the morning anyway when this thread is still alive. I need new friends.

Video games (not so much into them anymore, as I used to be), hobbyist video game dev, webdev, sysadmin, anime, kind of been out of programming and several hobbies because depression crippled my motivation.

Yeah, I'm running µTox with a "–portable" option, which takes the "Tox" folder out of "/home/user/.config/Tox" (Linux) and "AppData/Roaming/Tox" (Windows), and puts it it either /home/user/Tox or wherever you installed the program.

I'm then simply syncing that folder with Mega Sync, pretty easy stuff.
