Because of this, it is sometimes very difficult to figure out the actual urls that correspond to the streams being played. Pulseaudio. Many websites (and linux distros) shit on it and say you "just need alsa", but alsa itself can't play sound from two applications at a time. It also has problems with recording sound from USB soundcards (despite any asoundrc "hacks", I still couldn't manage it), but Pulse allows that easily. It also allows to set different volumes for each application. I wasted too much time listening to these sites that said "you just need alsa man, pulse is dead! Here's an asoundrc hack that totally doesn't work!" but I finally just got Pulse and I'm glad.

I didn't fuck up anything aside from trusting all these websites. I used whatever is the default and that couldn't play from multiple applications nor record from a USB soundcard (it recorded from the microphone instead). Then I "learned" that various "asoundrc hacks" will solve that but they didn't, so I jumped to the only available solution.
Great that it works for you, but it didn't for me. Try recording from an USB soundcard with ffmpeg and tell me if it works with plain alsa (no, really, I'm interested).

No, you fucked it up. Alsa has always been able to play more than one application at a time. What alsa does not allow is independant application channel mixing.
Pulseaudio is seriously great though. I love using the network sound for watching videos on a second computer.
