Have a question, might as well make it a general thread.
Question:
Is it possible a open source and proprietary license? Any examples?

Secure Android Browsing
Hey, /g/
What is the most secure way for me to browse on my Android without rooting and installing a different OS? I am weary of TOR because it is associated with some scummy shit (CP, Drugs, etc). I just don't want to be tracked by the government because, well, it's none of their business.
>Pic not related.
Alternative browsers?
Why the browsers performance have been shit by the past year or so?
They used to work just fine.
The moment i install Firefox (Clean) performance goes to ground same for Chrome.
In a poorly optimized kind of way. Also adblockers just won't work.
Opera works like silk but compatibility is very low unless i install the chrome hack.
As you can see i'm a /g/ newfag.
...What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Program Thread
Link all of the obscure programs that other anons might not know about.4chan targeted me?
So I was lurking on 4chan's /pol/ and then without any explanation those alerts start emerging.
1.Refresh.BC.Troyan
2.ScrInject.B. Troyan
After that I can no longer see any 4chan boards nor make any threads. Links didn't worked too.
Now I went to 4plebs to see if it was anything working. And voila alerts started emerging again.
So I can no longer lurk or post on 4chan. Already tried it with another PC that never browsed 4chan at all with adblock, noscript and Java disabled, to get the same alerts. So its definitely the server the responsible not an external cause?
Am I the only one that's having trouble with the Synaptics Touchpad in virtually fucking all Linux distros?
I prefer lightweight DE's such as LXDE/XFCE and I'd give Enlightenment a shot if the distros that run it (like Bodhi or Manjaro) didn't have the jumpy touchpad cursor issue.
I've tried and fix certain config files but it never solves the problem completely.
Right now I've been comfortably using Peppermint with LXDE which is pretty nice and doesn't have that problem, and it's amazing if I don't take into account that I'm not taking advantage of the distro for its original intention

>download latest Gnome 3 updateDeleted my Google account
I just deleted my Google account. Just like that. I had a bunch of paid Android apps, and didn't even look at what I had in Google Drive (it had been almost a year since I last checked, so I figured I wouldn't miss it anyway).
Let me tell you, it feels great to throw away shit you think you need but actually don't.
Of course Google and the NSA will cherish my data forever, but I will not be feeding them any further via that particular inlet.

IP reset - paid gig $$$
Anyone can let me know what I'm doing wrong? Trying to reset my router's IP by changing the MAC address for my router. I do this, turn off router for like an hour, power back on..open new browser cleared of cookies, but the IP remains the same.
Also...ipconfig/release returns "media disconnected" error. I appreciate any help, and if someone's instructions can get this working, I dont mind shooting $20 to your PayPal.
About this code. It's shit isn't it?

Robotics
I have very little practical computer knowledge and am planning on building a robot to help around the home.
I know how to HTML so I can probably get by programming it, but how do I make the arms go?
Also why does it take so much time and money to make these things when they're just computers and bits?
THANKS
Dear anybody with a career in computer science:
Hi /g/.
I'm 17 and in my Senior year of high school. I love programming, and I recently scored an internship at a Software Engineering/Cybersecurity firm. I was one of 3 people out of the 10 that were interviewed that was chosen. I'm pretty pumped about it, and feel like this could lead to opportunities.
But I still want to talk to people that are farther than I am.
If this internship leads to some sort of apprenticeship that I can learn significantly more from, then I don't think I'm going to head straight to college to start working on a degree in Computer Science, mainly for debt and time-saving reasons.
However, if it doesn't, I'll probably head to community college and take classes to get knowledge and experience that I need to get started in the field.
What I want to know is, what did you do to get a career in programming going? What do?
Are different gtx 960 cards compatible?
Okay I'm currently purchasing this evga gtx 960 2gb for £105 but then I came across this other 960 for £140 for a 4gb model, I looked around online and found out that there isn't much of a performance boost for the 4gb model, but then I thought what if I buy both and sli them, I've done all the checking to see if my motherboard and psu can support this, I just want to know.
.
Are the 2gb 960 and 4gb 960 compatible for sli, are these two cards able to do sli?

I don't know how to get out...
I wanted to get out of the Google Ecosystem, but its nearly impossible...
I began to think of replacements for everything:
Gmail? Outlook!
YouTube? I'll just download subscribed videos automatically.
GDrive? OneDrive (dropbox too small)
Chrome? Palemoon
Google Music? ...Spotify?
Google Books? Kindle maybe...
Google Search? DuckDuckGo I guess...
Android? Uh...fuck.
Should I bother? Maybe the ecosystem is better and more convenient for me anyway? Help /g/entoomen
US Department of Defense is aggressively upgrading to Windows 10
>The US DoD is planning to move 4 million machines to TempleOS within a year. That's an aggressive timeline, and one that reflects confidence in Microsoft's latest operating system and a need to move to more secure software. The DoD's move to TempleOS began in November after an internal memo directed all Combatant Commands, Services Agencies and Field Activities to rapidly deploy TempleOS.
How fucked are they?
Asus ROG G752 or G751 (or something else?)
I've been doing a lot of research for a new laptop. The laptop will be primarily for general use, although also intensive tasks such as photo/video editing. I don't game a lot, but it would be nice to secure that capability. I've been torn between the Asus G752 and the 751, because although the G752 has the new Skylake processor and DDR4 technology, I'm not sure if I like the design too much; it looks too flashy and not as subtle as the G751.
The specs on the models I am looking at are:
G752: i7 6700HQ, 1TB + 256 SSD, 970M + Graphics Coprocesser, 24GB DDR4
G751: i7 4720HQ, 2TB + 1TB SSD, 970M, Bluray-RW + Bluetooth
32GB DDR3, 8.4 lbs
Both are around the same price of ~$1800. I'm also unsure whether the 980M is worth it; I would have to pay more for that to get it for the g752, but it is ~$1600 in the G752 in exchange for less hard drive space.
So, my main questions are: Is the design of the Asus G752 something to worry about? Are the problems that the G752 fixes worth using it over the G751 anyway? Will I kick myself in the future for not grabbing DDR4 + Skylake i7? Is there something else you think I should get? I have looked at MSI, but I prefer the Asus keyboard much more.
Hey /g/ I am a little stuck. I'm not sure if you can help.
I recently changed the CPU on my M5A97 EVO and now I can't seem to be able to do anything past POST. I just get a blank screen.
I believe this has to do with not changing the overclocking settings before changing the CPU.
Here are somethings I have tried:
1. Tried to change the boot menu options, this fails and after POST the motherboard makes a clicking noise whenever a button on the keyboard is pressed.
2. Press the MEM OK! button on the computer to force it to load with the default settings. MOBO pops up saying that the default settings have been loaded and that I should go into the BIOS settings. I try, blank screen.
3. Tried to switch from HDMI to VGA (via a DVI to VGA converter) I see nothing.
4. Removed CMOS battery and placed it back in nothing
5. Swapped out the video card for my old one, nothing
Please help /g/

Red Dot Linux
Hello my friend and welcome to the learning of the computer device system. My name is Pajeet Bashir and i will be for the guiding of you with the journey into the exploring of computer device. For our first lesson we will begin into the installing of the Operating System. We will be using the Linux Version of Operating System throughout the Tutorials. The version we will use is the Official Red Dot Linux Distribution! RDEL Red Dot Enterprise Linux. Developed right here in Mumbai! I was Top-Level Developer of th RDEL project. and i am here to sharing my knowledge of the Linux Operating Systems.
for the first step we must obtaining the RDEL iso which means the file that has RDEL on it. you must create an account and click on all the pop-up ads, making sure to install any recommended software. we are assuming you are using the Windows Microsoft Version of the Operating System. you will needing to use the USB DISK device or the CD/DVD device for to completing the installation. you will find the iso here http://RedDotLinux.org/RDEL_4.04.027_-(Generic)_x86_64_system64_1.0.1.iso/
you will using the software of your system to making the install medium. then it can reboot with the install disk loaded. the first menu will be in sanskrit you must select "drupal" then "new" and follow the on screen menu's. CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE NOW A RED DOT LINUX USER!!!!!!!
/g/uys, I'm thinking about buying a tablet. I've never encountered a laptop worth a damn, and I really want a portable computing solution to work while I'm on the go. I have a few questions before I embark on this questionable journey:
•Can I (using an external optical drive) install an older version of Gentoo 7 on any tablet without fucking everything sky high? I know a lot of times hardware for stuff like this is chosen specifically because it works with whatever datamining OS was tossed onto the machine, but since I'm not an idiot, I feel like I could work around that kind of stuff. Correct me if I'm wrong.
•Is a tablet actually a good option vs a laptop? I have reservations about laptops, but that could just be poor selection on my part/the part of others whose laptops I have experience with. I feel like the fewer moving parts like fans and fold-able screens would help with preventing huge breaks, but I'm willing to admit I may be wrong.
•Is there any fucking tablet that doesn't use Intel's horseshit processors? I'm an AMD man, myself, but I can't seem to find anything aside from Intel's rubbish.
Looking to get a new machine.
So, I want a new computer. My old Acer is junk and barely pushes Fallout NV. I'm not looking for anything too crazy, but I'd like to at least play games that came out up until now. I don't plan on doing much else but gaming, but I am in the reserves and would probably take it to drill with me for the hotel.
Here's the problem: I'm on a budget. Of about 600 bucks. And I'm noob as fuck at computer shit (as far as hardware etc goes). I'd really like to get a laptop, but a desktop (premade or built) isn't out of the question.
I found this, it's the first halfway decent laptop I found in my budget:
Dell Inspiron 5000 i5555-2843slvOverview
TempleOS Home 64-bit
1.8GHz AMD Carrizo-L A10-8700P quad-core processor with 2MB cache, up to 3.2GHz

Build
Hey /g/, trying to build a rig. Looking at getting a gtx 970, 16 gigs ram, ssd, etc. Got everything down, wondering if I should get the i5 6600k skylake, or the Xeon E3-1231v3. CPUBoss gave the skylake a better score, but to my understanding, the xeon has hyperthreading and is essentially an i7 without integrated graphics. What would you recommend? The skylake doesn't have hyperthreading enabled. Any help would be appreciated.

Calling upon every RCfag, I need you help:
I want to get 1/8/-1/10 brushless Monster truck. The only serious brands I can get reliably in my country are Traxxas and HPI. So basically, if I want a bashing big boy it boils down to Savage FLUX vs E-Revo brushless.
Well, technically I COULD order the "legendary" Thunder Tiger MT4 G3 from Ebay, but the import costs would make it almost as expensive as brushless Revo. Oh, and there's Losi LST XXL2-E on Ebay, it looks like the best thing out there, but I'm not sure I want to take such a plunge, the truck is still an unknown novelty.
So what do?
Pic related it's Losi, check out the specs.
good netbook or tablet under 200$?
My laptop's hard drive just gave out and I can't afford to buy another one. I mainly use it for downloading torrents of tv shows and movies, and thankfully I stored my 1tb of content on a external hard drive. Question is, is there a netbook or tablet under 200$ that I can use for these purposes? I'm hard pressed to find one with decent memory, but at least some of them seem to be able to expand with additional micro sd cards. I also like to play on dolphin and DS emulators but I doubt I'll find something with enough power to play them at full speed.
Do you guys have anything in mind? This shit sucks, my birthday is tomorrow and not only does my eye burn because I can't afford new contacts/glasses but then this shit happens. Being poor sucks.

Getting a full time job for less than a year
>Be me an inexperienced programmer. No job experience
I've already finished all of Codecademy's track excluding API's (If I haven't deleted my account I would've shown you) that I only did a small handful of.
Currently I haven't been coding in 2 years as my computer gotten old and is collecting dust like a motherfucker on a weekly basis to the level of crashing.
I'm just getting back after knowing only CSS, HTML, and, Python on a solid level of understanding. So I want to get back to programming.
How do I find a job which I can not guarentee of staying for more than a month.
Why can I not disable the fucking TempleOS Skype app? I just bought a new laptop, comes with TempleOS of course. Figured I'd leave Windows on it and I guess they added this native Skype desktop app. No matter what I do it doesn't let me disable it. I tried setting the actual Skype program as default, I tried uninstalling and disabling the app. It never shuts off. I got the messages to stop but now when I'm sleeping or something people will call me and it wakes me up. Is there a service for this messaging app or something?
Fastest Ubuntu-based/fork distro?
Evening, /g/entoomen
I've been using Linux Mint Cinnamon, but I'm looking for the fastest Ubuntu-based distro. I've been looking at XFCE based ones, but I did consider MATE.
Which do you use? I have plenty of power on my desktop, but the less my distro requires the better. I'm also looking for one with steady support. This will be my primary OS, as I've completely migrated from Gentoo for both work and entertainment.
So far my contenders are:
Xubuntu
Linux Mint XFCE
Lubuntu
Cinnamon seems just visually sluggish.
What are your experiences with the other similar distros, speed wise?

Touchpad general? Sure, why not.
So I was messing around at work, fixing laptops and shit, when I finally got to a Sony VAIO SVF15213CXP (i3). I installed it's missing RAM and HDD, was about to install an OS onto it to begin testing when I noticed something amazing; this model has one of THE best touchpads I've ever felt/used. I'm serious, my index finger practically glides on in, has flawless left/right clicking, and no problems doing both at the same time. I just started installing an OS so I'm not too sure how well the TP gesture support is, so I'm eagerly waiting to install those driver. Back to the topic, who else has run into some fantastic touchpads.

I recently wrote a rock-paper-scissors-lizard-spock game in Java where the winner is determined by a function that takes the input of the computer's randomly generated choice and the user's choice.
I've also been reading opinions lately on whether or not it's best to use If/Else statements or Switch statements when making decisions like that in your programs.
SO, I'm gonna start this thread with two purposes:
A) I've used nothing but If/Else as long as I've been programming because it's easier to type and easier to follow for me, but I figure I should take other people's thoughts into consideration. How ugly is this? Do you think it would be easier to read for other people if I did with a series of switch statements? Does the whole thing about optimization with most compilers favoring Switch over If/Else actually even matter?
B) Do you prefer using If/Else or switch?
Obviously my preference is If/Else because, like I said earlier, it's what I'm used to and it's the easiest to make sense of for me. Maybe that's just me, though.
Here's the code I'm referring to:
package Functions;
public class determineWinner {
public static String doThis(String computerChoice, String userChoice) {
String winner = "Undecided";
if (userChoice.equals(computerChoice)) {
System.out.println("It's a tie.");
winner = "Tie";
} else if (!userChoice.equals(computerChoice)) {
System.out.println("User: " + userChoice);
System.out.println("Computer: " + computerChoice);
if (userChoice.equals("Rock")) {
if (computerChoice.equals("Paper")) {
winner = "Computer";
} else if (computerChoice.equals("Scissors")) {
winner = "User";
} else if (computerChoice.equals("Lizard")) {
winner = "User";
} else if (computerChoice.equals("Spock")) {
winner = "Computer";
}
} else if (userChoice.equals("Paper")) {
if (computerChoice.equals("Rock")) {
winner = "User";
} else if (computerChoice.equals("Scissors")) {
winner = "Computer";
} else if (computerChoice.equals("Lizard")) {
winner = "Computer";
} else if (computerChoice.equals("Spock")) {
winner = "User";
}
} else if (userChoice.equals("Scissors")) {
if (computerChoice.equals("Rock")) {
winner = "Computer";
} else if (computerChoice.equals("Paper")) {
winner = "User";
} else if (computerChoice.equals("Lizard")) {
winner = "User";
} else if (computerChoice.equals("Spock")) {
winner = "Computer";
}
} else if (userChoice.equals("Lizard")) {
if (computerChoice.equals("Rock")) {
winner = "Computer";
} else if (computerChoice.equals("Paper")) {
winner = "User";
} else if (computerChoice.equals("Scissors")) {
winner = "Computer";
} else if (computerChoice.equals("Spock")) {
winner = "User";
}
} else if (userChoice.equals("Spock")) {
if (computerChoice.equals("Rock")) {
winner = "User";
} else if (computerChoice.equals("Paper")) {
winner = "Computer";
} else if (computerChoice.equals("Scissors")) {
winner = "User";
} else if (computerChoice.equals("Lizard")) {
winner = "Computer";
}
}
}
if(!winner.equals("Tie")){
System.out.println(winner+ " wins.");

C++ troubles
Hey /g/, I'm learning c++ from a book, and to make sure I knew what I've learned so far well enough to move on, I've tried writing a simple program that calculates the amount of time it would take to sing the "bottles of beer on the wall" song, in the users time measurement unit of choice.
However, I've run into a problem that I can't seem to find a solution for. Whenever I run the code, no matter what I put in for the time unit, it measures in seconds. I'll post it below.

http://kottke.org/15/05/how-richard-stallman-does-his-computing
>Richard Stallman, the free software activist and author of some of the world's most used and useful software, probably uses his computer and the Internet a lot differently than you do. For starters, ethics and privacy concerns trump his need for convenience.
I am careful in how I use the Internet.
I generally do not connect to web sites from my own machine, aside from a few sites I have some special relationship with. I usually fetch web pages from other sites by sending mail to a program (see git://git.gnu.org/womb/hacks.git) that fetches them, much like wget, and then mails them back to me. Then I look at them using a web browser, unless it is easy to see the text in the HTML page directly. I usually try lynx first, then a graphical browser if the page needs it (using konqueror, which won't fetch from other sites in such a situation).
I occasionally also browse using IceCat via Tor. I think that is enough to prevent my browsing from being connected with me, since I don't identify myself to the sites I visit.
I never pay for anything on the Web. Anything on the net that requires payment, I don't do. (I made an exception for the fees for the stallman.org domain, since that is connected with me anyway.)
I would not mind paying for a copy of an e-book or music recording on the Internet if I could do so anonymously, and it were ethical in other ways (no DRM or EULA). But that option almost never exists. I keep looking for ways to make it happen.

Just a quick note the global root is about to be extended to capture all web and ssh traffic.
With the System D in-fighting it is going to be forked. If it has a backdoor the % of unix systems capture with the current firmware backdoors will increase a sizable amount.
TLS
With TLS added to OpenSSH to capture more SSH traffic, it is being pushed to capture more SSH traffic.
It is now being pushed as HTTPS/3 and HTTPS Is disappearing
- https will be eradicated
- https:// will load TLS (see link above)
- consumers will think its secure when they see https:// and the logo
- one site will possibley be hacked and then http will be so thoroughly slandered everyone will demand tls
- getting the public to switch back to https will be impossible
The benefit of this is, if it is breakable or backdoored, not only will they get the new tls traffic but all the old https traffic also--- and now the openssh traffic too.
Why not offer https:// and tls://?
Every mandatory https movement or group was completely stalled or infiltrated for the last 10 years
The way it was added to openssh... They merged it like 1 day after openssl 1.0 was released, and insta released a 1.01 with basically only TLS. and the whole thing crumbled within a day. the patch was submitted and then code reviewed by the same guy.
TLS implementation has already had 2 serious show-stopping bugs if i remember. and heartbleed on top of that.
admittedly theres not much proof anywhere.. and I was off the internet in 2012 but from what i remember the story is this:
- I dont really remember anyone saying we need tls
- I do remember ppl saying we need all sites to use https and maybe https 3 -- but all the projects were met with
mysterious hurdles and people refusing to cooperate
- (this is similar to how all black rights and human rights movements were stopped in the last 100 years)
- I dont really remember any outcry of happyness tls was coming along
- I dont know who made it or what their background is and why they are legit
- Specifically I think it was made by two young kids, and I wouldnt be suprised if they are AT&T employees.
- etc
- (this can be argued in a small timewindow view of tls, but based on a view of 15 years of HTTPS is my opinion)
Arguably the w3c knows what its doing to HTML, but should we follow? HTML is still a piece of crap after 20 years. (Google "How to Center text CSS", 27,100,000 results)
Before we do this we should understand how ****ing hard it is gonna be to setup a MeshNet...
Already posted this on HN and got down-voted into oblivion.
tbh i would rather just enc the html files with pgeep and call it done.
Summary:
Prepare for:
ALL web sites to serve TLS only, no HTTPS anymore, TLS will be used under HTTPS:// urls
ALL SSH clients to have TLS handshake code
new SystemD forks showing up in distros
OpenSSH developed by 50+ people from 30 different countries
