The most important part of a monarchy is finding the right person to be the monarch, how would one go about this?

Have you ever heard of the myth of rex Nemorensis?
Alternatively the slumbering king in the mountain?

It's much like the selection of a vanguard party.
In glorious motherland, monarch chooses you.

ok the tl;dr is that Stannis is about to try re-taking Winterfell from the Boltons and Freys. He was triggered because someone brought up his brother Robert (big mistake)

If you really want to know what'll happen, (GRRM takes a page or two from history making some things obvious), "The Battle of Ice" coming in the next book is going to emulate "The Battle on Ice" from real life (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_on_the_Ice). Basically, the Mannis made a bunch of holes in a frozen lake that the Boltons and Freys are gonna have to cross in order to attack Stannis; and thus, the Boltons and Freys are gonna go for a swim in this said lake. Also, Stannis has some allies inside Winterfell that are going to help him, he just doesn't know about it yet…

Nice.

 No.39

It doesn't make much difference, but basically has to have historic and cultural origins in the country

The Monarch is not chosen, he is made by the will of god

Ideally, the individual would have been trained from birth in subjects regarding kingship (politics, history, cultural studies, theology for good measure, etc).

But that's really the best for hereditary monarchs whose predecessors have already been established.

For the claimant, the idea set of principles he should exhibit are as follows:

DISCIPLINE

COURAGE

PIETY

HONOR

JUSTICE

Among other virtues.

One of my ideal models of kingship is pic related.

 No.112

The vikings did it right. The worthy get the throne.

 No.136

Although blood is important, worthiness i more. See >>74.

If your country does not have an established royal line, look for royal lines of the people who founded it.

 No.139

>>112

Not exactly, as some rulers that overthrew the last one would get too high and do weird things. Also the overthrowing is never really needed - most of them did for lust of power.

A ruler should not have lust for power, he should have lust for knowledge.

 No.142

A few options:

>Let soldiers decide

Whoever can sway the preexisting military to their side takes the throne. No need for bloodshed unless the army becomes evenly divided. The monarch's expected to take charge of the army anyway.

>Elective monarchy

Like a presidential election, except electing president-for-life. No political parties, everyone an independent. Could be a clusterfuck.

>Electoral College

A body of qualified candidates chooses one of their own, like the College of Cardinals for Pope. Though that just shifts the question to who gets to be one of the cardinals…

>Existing Claim

Get geneaologists and historians to track down whoever has the faintest claim to legitimate rule over the territory you're talking about. Might turn out to be some nobody (or possibly worse, someone already king of somewhere else), but it's not that crazy, this has actually happened in the real world when nations decided they wanted a king (or wanted to change the one they had…)

>Random Selection

If you really believe the ones best suited to power don't seek it, or that people thrust into greatness tend to live up to it, this might not be so bad. For extra fun don't exclude criminals and the mentally ill.

The only choice is Dei Gratia Fidelibus Defensor Mikhail I Anissimov, King of Idaho and Leader of NRx.

>Existing claim

The House of Orleans-Bragança who were rulers of Brazil still claims the land, and all the claimants are educated from early life to be a ruler.

Absolutely disgusting.

 No.307

>>136

Countries without a royal bloodline shouldn't look to it's founders. Noble bloodlines are not established by some god, they are made by men great enough to found them.

 No.309

In the case of Britain at least, the kind of Lichtenstein is a direct descendent of the Stuarts. Also, since the monarchs there actually do things, he's been trained.
