This makes me think. The whole "Asriel is in the ruins" thing isn't even hinted at. You're told to go say goodbye to all your friends, but there isn't really a good reason even to walk all the way to Toriel's house because she's obviously not there, and even less of a reason to go to the ruins unless you want to say goodbye to all those froggits or some shit. The likelihood that someone's going to keep on going until they get to the very beginning, if they haven't been spoilered that Asriel's there, is basically zero.
I'm not saying it never happens, but I am saying that considering how important that last conversation is, there should have been some reason to get every player to go there, and not just leave it as something akin to an easter egg. Something like, you're walking through Snowdin and you run into Monster Kid again, and when you talk to him he mentions "Someone I've never seen before went by earlier. I know it was a kid because he had a striped shirt." Maybe there's a couple of other hints along the way, like footprints in the dust of the ruins or whatever. Something to get into the player's head that maybe they can still save Asriel if they just keep following him wherever he's going.
