While the American memory of the Space Race is most often filtered through black-and-white photos of white men on the moon, NASA’s reality was Technicolor.

People of color, including the black female mathematicians who worked as “human computers” and were depicted in the Oscar-winning “Hidden Figures,” were a part of NASA’s space program from its inception.

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing, and to highlight another hidden figure, About Us spoke with Franklin Chang Díaz, who is NASA’s first Latino astronaut.

Don't forget the part where they tried so hard to have a nigger in space but the best nigger pilot they could find couldn't pass astronaut flight training even with months of special tutoring. They wanted to pass him anyway but some of the other astronauts threatened to quit the program due to the safety concerns of an incompetent pilot on a moon mission. Moral of the story: Niggers are good only for manual labor with white overseers, and diversity hires in space will lead to horrible accidents.

Racial disparity in arrests and convictions has been well documented, but research now shows another factor plays a role in terrorism cases – religion.

https://wwwcache.wral.com/asset/news/local/wral_investigates/2019/07/01/18485518/32948-Equal-Treatment-Web-1-DMID1-5jbsk5mg3.pdf

A decade ago, federal authorities broke up a terrorist cell in the Johnston County community of Willow Spring. Ringleader Daniel Patrick Boyd, his two sons and several others raised money, stockpiled weapons and trained in preparation for jihadist attacks against American military and foreign targets, including the Marine base in Quantico, Va.

Boyd and his sons, Dylan Mohammed Boyd and Zakariya Boyd, all pleaded guilty in the case. The father is still serving a 17-year prison sentence, while both of his sons are already out of prison.

President Donald Trump referenced Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MI) in a series of posts that literally urged the freshman congresswoman to go back to Africa.

On Sunday morning, Trump referenced the recent tension between Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and the four freshman Democrats who voted against the House version of a border bill — Omar, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA).

“So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly……….and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run,” Trump wrote.

Only Omar was born outside the United States, and all four were elected to the House of Representatives, where their job is literally to govern this country.

“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how……..it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!” Trump wrote.

Con Edison has yet to figure out why a large swath of Manhattan’s West Side was plunged into darkness by the blackout that lasted more than five hours on Saturday night.

In a statement released late Sunday morning, the power company said it “will be conducting a diligent and vigorous investigation to determine the root cause of the incident.”

“Over the next several days and weeks, our engineers and planners will carefully examine the data and equipment performance relating to this event, and will share our findings with regulators and the public,” the company said.

Con Ed spokesman Alfonso Quiroz blamed the blackout on a “disruption on the transmission side” of the company’s power grid.

Con Ed’s overhead transmission lines carry 438,000 volts of electricity to substations where the power is lowered to about 13,000 volts before being distributed to homes and businesses, he said.

Officials initially suspected a manhole fire that affected an underground transformer, but Quiroz said there’s “no evidence of a fire at this point.”

The blackout stranded people on subway trains and elevators, and forced the evacuation of Madison Square Garden and cancellation of Broadway shows.

Fire officials say they received a call about smoke in the building around 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

When they arrived, they found smoke in the basement. There was an electrical fire in one of the transformer boxes in the basement.

The hotel has been evacuated. Employees and guests are not allowed back into the structure until air monitoring levels are safe.

Officials say there was no damage to hotel rooms outside of the basement. The hotel is working with guests to find other places for them to stay for the night.

In a statement, according to the report, Racine said the following: “The Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia has issued subpoenas to the National Rifle Association of America (NRA) and the NRA Foundation, Inc., as part of an investigation into whether these entities violated the District’s Nonprofit Act.”

Racine’s office is not the first to take a harder look at the NRA’s financial dealings. New York Attorney General Letitia James is also questioning the organization’s tax-exempt status after multiple reports highlighted extensive spending on consultants, programming, and luxury goods, not just by the organization itself but some of its leadership. James’s office is currently investigating the organization and has also subpoenaed financial records. The NRA’s charter is in New York, which falls under James’s purview, while Racine’s office can rescind status for nonprofits that aren’t complying with regulations.

I suggest supporting multiple organizations to spread the risk and to have a stronger coalition. The NRA just needs better leadership and I hope it restructures.

If the GOA and NRA were sea vessels, the NRA would be the largest and it makes sense to save it by kicking out the captain and top personnel instead of celebrate its sinking. More sea vessels is better since it means a more powerful navy.

Just last week AMD launched its latest Ryzen 3000 series of CPUs. The third-generation Ryzen chips are the first to be based on 7nm technology, but there is a problem for users of some Linux-based systems.

For distributions based on newer versions of the Linux kernel, an issue renders systems unable to boot. Some users have managed to patch the systemd component with an older version to allow successful booting, but a BIOS update from AMD is what's needed.

While the boot problem was noticed by many users, it was Michael Larabel writing for Phoronix that highlight the issue. In his review of the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X and Ryzen 9 3900X he said that the chips "offer incredible Linux performance but with a big caveat". He ran into problem with various Linux distros, as he explains:

>While Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and older Linux distributions boot Zen 2, to date I have not been able to successfully boot the likes of Ubuntu 19.04, Manjaro Linux, and Fedora Workstation 31. On all newer Linux distributions I've tried on two different systems built around the Ryzen 7 3700X and Ryzen 9 3900X, each time early in the boot process as soon as trying to start systemd services, all systemd services fail to start.

A number of Twitter users are calling the man who attacked an immigration detention facility in Tacoma, Washington, a “hero” and “martyr.”

Willem Van Spronsen died Saturday morning after a shootout with police when he arrived at the Northwest Detention Center and attempted to set buildings on fire, authorities said, the Tacoma News Tribune reported.

The Tacoma Police Department responded to a call around 4 a.m. when Van Spronsen, armed with a rifle and flares, started throwing incendiary devices toward a propane tank in an effort to set fire to the facility and managed to ignite a car, the department said, according to The Seattle Times.

Deb Bartley, a friend of Van Spronsen, told the Times that he identified as an anarchist and anti-fascist (Antifa), and she believes his intent in attacking the center was to provoke a conflict.

“He was ready to end it,” Bartley said. “I think this was a suicide. But then he was able to kind of do it in a way that spoke to his political beliefs . I know he went down there knowing he was going to die.”

Firefighters in Denver responding to a report of a man passed out in his car this weekend encountered a scene that will fuel the nightmares of many.

The Denver Fire Department tweeted out photos Sunday showing a 15-foot snake trying to escape from a car where its owner was passed out from alcohol consumption.

https://twitter.com/Denver_Fire/status/1150515646834323456

The tweet did not include information as to what happened to the snake or if police issued a citation or made an arrest, though they reminded people not to drink and drive — especially with a pet snake.

Saturday that 34-year-old Michael Gates pleaded guilty June 19 to illegally possessing and importing exotic sheep species.

Gates received a one-year deferred judgment sentence.

Authorities say the Vernal, Utah, resident procured the animals for clients to hunt at his ranch near Dinosaur, 295 miles (475 kilometers) west of Denver.

The man charged in connection with the Savannah Spurlock case is due in court Monday morning.

David Sparks is scheduled to appear in Garrard District Court at 9 a.m. Monday for a preliminary hearing.

Sparks was arrested Wednesday. He is charged with tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse.

Police say they found Spurlock's body on the property where Sparks lives in Garrard County. Spurlock, the missing Richmond mother of four, was last seen in January.

A not guilty plea was entered for Sparks during his arraignment last week, and a judge appointed a public defender for him.

While the journey through the justice system is now beginning, loved ones' search for answers continues.

Forrest was renowned for his tactics during the Civil War, but he was a slave trader before the conflict and later an early leader of the Ku Klux Klan.

A bust of Forrest is on display on the second floor of the state capitol.

A man was screaming from a window on the second story of the apartment complex with the baby and toddler hanging out of the window, Fierro told KOAT. The rest of the construction crew were bringing ladders over when Fierro told the man to drop his children.

"He dropped her. I caught her. Then they bring out another little boy, two or three years old, then we caught him as well," Fierro said.

Lt. Tom Ruiz, a spokesman for the Albuquerque Fire Rescue, told CNN the fire sent three people to the hospital. The two children were taken to the hospital by family and one person was taken by ambulance for smoke inhalation. All are in stable condition, Ruiz said.

The apartment complex was "a total loss," he said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Ruiz said even though firefighters were on scene within five minutes, he's glad Fierro and the other workers were quick to act.
