Literally every single time I try and edit a PNG, it gets destroyed completely and cannot be opened/ used. I can usually change only a single character slot at a time in the Hex Editor, which makes almost no change to the image, and then god fucking forbid I do anything more than one slot, the image breaks. Seriously? WHY THE FUCK CAN I NOT JUST WORK WITH PNGS?!?!!!

Gotta look up PNG format specifications. PNG uses DEFLATE, which is a Hoffman compression algorithm for the actual pixel data, so you'll need to look up how those work. Because of the compression, adjusting one byte can make huge and unpredictable changes.

JPEG is what most people hack. It stores 3 different monochrome images for red, blue, and green. That gives it the stripes of discoloration when it's hacked.

You can also take bmps, import as raw data in Audacity, and apply effects to them for some pretty interesting results. It's a bit more methodical than randomly fucking with shit in a hex editor.
