So I am an avid fan of mead and drinking mead. To the point where I am currently brewing two one gallon batches of my own mead.
Anyone else like mead or are brewing mead? If so what brand do you drink or what recipe are you brewing?
Do you use mead for blots? Or drink it on holidays?
No.2010

>>1998I haven't used mead in anything other than drinking with friends but we have enjoyed both online-bought and home-made mead. I recently made a gallon of apple mead, have another gallon of pure mead aging and have three one-gallon carboys sitting waiting to be used. Not sure what I want to make next, maybe some more pure mead but trying different honeys/yeasts!

>>2016I am making a JAOM at the moment and experimenting with a Hazelnut Spiced mead. Have a bunch of Hazelnuts soaking in bourbon as we speak (letting it soak for two months to extract the oils). Plan on adding them in then.

What's the best method for making mead? I've got this infographic but I've never used it and can't vouch for it. I've wanted to make some mead for a while now.
No.2030
>>2028This is a good starter recipe the only thing I would do is substitute the plastic gallon for a glass one. I have heard that plastic can produce off flavors.
Also if you are going to follow the recipe to it to the letter.

>>2028Also make sure to sanitizes everything you are using or may come in contact with and the recipe may say "Drinkable 2-4 weeks" but it is wise to let that thing ferment for at least a few months (if you are extra patient a year)

Knowing how to make things like soap, candles and alcohol during a SHTF situation might save your life one day.

>>2031i have no experience with brewing but this recipe was cheap and easy so i picked up the stuff that I didn't already have (a sealed glass gallon jug of water and the honey) and want to try this. what do i need to sanitize here and how do i do it? it looks all i need to do is sanitize the bowl and spoon for the yeast and a cutting board for the orange. do i soak them in bleach and let them dry or what?
and what about my hands for when i put the orange into the jug?
No.2399
>>2390Soak them in bleach+hot water for 20 minutes then just rinse them real good after. Do not want any bleach in the must.

>>1998Home-made edibles and drinkables are always more satisfying than shop/internet-bought counterparts, I encourage everyone to try some mead and make their own if they like it!
My friend and I have had tried a few things and so far our best product has resulted from ~2.25kg of honey topped up to ~1 BRITISH gallon with spring water (change honey quantity accordingly if using American gallons), fermented using a champagne yeast for as long as it takes to entirely finish. With some yeast nutrient, this wasn't very long at all - about 2 months tops. We've made mead before with less honey per gallon but it turned out enjoyable, but drier than wished for. Definitely going to stick with higher honey quantities from now on and will re-try some fruit/spiced we used before.

I'm not an avid drinker of any alcohol but this stuff beats that other crap. Mead is really nice I don't know if the stuff I got online a few months back was what some would call quality mead though.
http://www.hiddenlegendwinery.com/ I got from here came rather quick. So far all I had was their pure honey mead. If anyone knows of better mead let me know.
No.2746
>>2741Not sure bout that stuff. I usually buy local luckily there is a good meadery in my state
http://www.falconmead.com/ Just skip Redstone or Chaucers mead (from colordo and califronia) they taste terrible. But the Falcon's Mountain Mead is straight mead. Their dry stuff is bretty gud too.

I don't really have the patience to make it myself. I've tried a batch or two in the past, and it took at least six months of aging before it stopped tasting like industrial solvent. After a year, it was pretty nice. But I'm thirsty now.
I've been to a few wineries that also made mead, melomel and such. But most places seem to go for sweeter styles, which isn't to my taste.

This is the only mead that I can buy in my area. Anyone know if it's any good? I'm going to try brewing my own this summer, but I have never had any before so I'd like to have something to compare it to. This gets okay reviews online if that means anything, but it costs $30 for a bottle.
Yes, I know the name is retarded. It's mead from a fucking gas station, you can't expect too much.

Only tried mead once and didn't like it, thought that was a long time ago. Honey is expensive as hell too. I'll stick with apple wine.

My first batch of mead has cleared :). It uses the same recipe as this >>2028 except I added a little bit more cinnamon and used wine yeast (Lavin d47) instead. Tastes almost like a cider without the apple aspect (might actually add some organic cider to it to top it off). Going to let it age a bit before using it in future blots!

Turns out Mead is good for treating anitbiotic resistant bacteria. So make and drink more mead, ya skraelings.
Update on my mead making. My hazelnut spiced mead was a success tasted really good! Some pals and I enjoyed it during Yule. Made another batch this time a straight mead from Dark Alfalfa honey (has the texture and color of molasses and tastes a bit like molasses too). Bought this honey from a organic farmer. I am anticipating that the color would come out a lot darker probably reddish brown. Cannot wait though!

I think it would be worth brewing a few batches of beer before mead. I've never brewed before and honey is not just expensive in terms of money but it would be a huge waste of the lives and efforts of bees to mess it up…

Brewing beer is a bit more complex and you will need more equipment for it. If I had the room and money I would be brewing beer too!

Its not that had. Its all sugar (if you purchase a kit and if your a beginner you almost are certainly buying your malt) + yeast + water +time and hopefully cleanliness.
Honey is better in some ways because its naturally clean instead of just sweet.
I'm currently brewing 5gallons of a traditional (with just a smidge of yeast starter) that is currently slowly brewing. Should be ready to get it off its lees soon and let it sit around until the summer.
>>Hope you all get a chance to try and enjoy mead, Wassai!
No.9523
When making mead is there any risk of methanol being brewed? I don't really know how the whole process works chemically but I don't want to go blind because of moonshining
No.9561
>>9523
No there is no risk and anyways going blind off moonshine is a myth.
No.9571
>>9523
too little to kill you. the problem with moonshining is that it is a distilled drink, and the boiling point of methanol is a few degrees below the boiling point of ethanol, so throwing away the first batch (or heating the distilate to the boiling point of methanol) will usually help against that.
