It should be a well known fact by now that our ancestors practiced totemism, our holiest animals in the Germanic regions being the bear, the wolf, and the eagle.

Do you guys ever feel like you might have a totem animal? I mean not in an otherkin or fursona sense, in fact, I consider all that furry culture shit to be a bastardization of totemic traditions, likely spearheaded by the merchants. I have felt a connection with bears recently, especially now after watching through Marie Cachet's Bear Cult videos. Unfortunately bear pelts are pricy and hard to come by. I would love to go hunting for them, but I don't have a permit.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is, where can I find a good source on totems that isn't complete Wiccatru hippie new age horse shit?

You're forgetting ravens m8. Goats, hawk, bees and snakes were also sacred in Germanic myth (goats from Thor, hawks from some Germanic tribal names, bees from Frankish culture and some kennings co.paring valkyires to bees, snakes being one of the forms of Odin)

as to authentic sources on Germanic tribal totemism thats basically impossible, although there might be some other website or source that would know better than me. Your best bet is looking at and studying Germanic tribal names, as most of them refered to a totemic ancestor whether animal or human (for example, the Marsi were a roman translation of tiwazi(?) meaning sons of tiwaz, the cherusici possibly meant sons of the hart or sons of the hawk)

Well actually I kind of have this fear of goats dating back to when this one tried to kill me in a petting zoo as a small child. I know, I know, I need to get over it.

Interesting to note that bees are sacred. As we know now how important they are for plantlife and farmers.

Truly our ancestors must have had a wealth of knowledge that was lost.

I also always had an affinity for bears. Also did you know that the Finnish would have to perform a ritual before killing a bear because they thought that bears were sacred. And in some folklore they believed that bears were humans who ran into the forest and became wild.

I'm aware of Varg's video, in fact, he piqued my interest in the subject.

I also have always loved lions. I might want to look more into totemism in Rome and Greece as well considering how lions seemed to be a common totem animal there with heroes like Hercules.

this actually reminds me of an inuit tradition, in the days when they went spear-hunting for bears, they held the spearpoint in front of them and made sure to not back away or look away from the bear. they believe the bear lunged itself on the spear as a way of giving itself to the tribe of the hunter, as a reward for not showing fear.

also the idea of bears as wildmen reminds me of literal wildmen
