Maybe this is just me, but I think that kemono characters (especially the ones that are more cat-like) have fur that sticks out near the bottom of their faces (which I just assumed were whiskers or something). Pics related.
The only other piece of feedback I can give is that the head seems very round, although I can't tell for sure because of how the hair is shaped.
The rest is good though, I don't doubt that you could make some really good kemono art with a couple of tweaks/changes here and there.

not a bad idea, though it sucks to scrap something you put a lot of effort into. Good anatomy is definitely something you'll know when you see it, but it's hard to get right off the top of your head. There are diminishing returns when working on most pictures, so you'll get the most bang for your buck cranking out a bunch of rough sketches rather than agonizing over one masterpiece. I think your stuff shows a lot of promise. my suggestion would be to think a little bit harder about the placement of body parts relative to the underlying geometry. For example, the nose should be farther to the right in the image, as it is not in line with the center of the face. Additionally, his left ear appears to be facing the viewer, which doesn't make much sense considering that they normally face out from the body

thank you! i pretty much started drawing just this year.
the thing is, i really have no fucking idea what im doing. i dont understand how thing are supposed to work in 3d. i dont know how the head should roatte in space, also i just tend to eyeball the nose, because i dont know how the shortened muzzle extends from the plane of the face.
also, no idea how the neck should connect (just look at the mouse above to see what i mean) so i just avoid undershots. i really, really could use some help and/or a drawfriend who knew what hes doing.
did a fast ps edit, let me know if the general proportions/placement of the features looks better:
the distant ear is not that wrong imho, concidering its facing to front rather than to sides, on the other hand, the front one is placed too far up. the nose wasnt that wrong though, its more like that the eyes were too close together. (but maybe im just full of shit)

The shoulders are too narrow and decline too much from the neck. The torso is too long (and the legs are too short) and the leg shape seems a bit odd, as if you couldn't decide on partial digitigrade or plantigrade. also, the knees look a bit too far down but that may just be my taste.
Her belly button is also way too far down and i'm not sure if it's just the height, but it seems too far to the right (her right).
I can't advise on much else, as i can't work out the ideal relationships between the neck/collarbone/general chest area to my liking yet.

does anyone have any worthwhile tips regarding drawing bodies?
I can't even get the basic idea of how shits done, I understand using stickfigures/guidelines whatnot but it ends up looking like shit and I end up getting demotivated. Im just looking for some good tips/books, whatever. something that doesn't end up being "draw a circle > draw the rest of the body"
No.2654
>>2653
It takes a long time to get familiar with all the shapes in a body. I think it's a skill that's very hard to practice in specific, because there's so much information. It's something you learn and hone over a long period as you keep drawing.
For example you may know that an arm gets thinner towards the wrist. But then you may learn that the wrist is also flat. And then that the arm isn't consistently shaped because muscles bulge in different positions on different sides of the arm. The elbow bulges out when the arm is bent, but bulges sideways and almost sinks inwards when the arm is straight. There's an inset on the inside of the elbow joint. The shoulder tapers into the arm around the same height and behind where the topmost muscle starts bulging out…
You keep learning more details on top of the previous knowledge over time, but there's just too much to learn in one go, so you should take it one step at a time. Don't expect to learn it anytime soon. Draw whatever blob you can and then keep trying again using references, draw close up shots for more detail. You'll keep learning small bits and pieces that add up into a pile, and when you draw a lot you don't even have to really try to remember it because you know what should be there. If you try to remember the whole anatomy book, it'll be an overwhelming amount of information and you'll just forget most of it.
TL;DR: patience. Loads and loads of patience.
Also, try to hunt more specific problems. Don't just draw an arm because you want to learn to draw arms. Try to figure out what in specific is giving you the most trouble, and then learn to improve that. Maybe it's the way the shoulder connects to the body, maybe it's the way the arm connects to the shoulder, maybe the wrist shape makes no sense, maybe you don't know where the leg muscles are, maybe you don't know how the collarbone works…
I would guess that your most prominent problem in the beginning is simply proportions. How wide are the shoulders, how far down the arm reaches, where the elbow is, how long and thick the neck is, where the hips are, etc.
So for now, try to draw random thick figures (get it? thick figure? stick figure? thick stick figure? I'm either the most clever or most annoying person) and try to give them the right proportions. Remember that the width of each shape is almost as important as their length, for example you can make the top of the upper body wider, make the waist thinner, or make the arms attach farther away.
Pic related is a shitty example.
Also, don't be afraid to "cheat". If the legs look too short, just cut them and move them downwards and fill the gaps. If the hands look too wide, cut half of them and move it closer to the other half.

Well I must be blind and/or retarded then, because I can't find any. Human faces are much more elongated and wider on the bottom, and animal faces have a much thicker/longer snout and smaller skull. Most drawn references are from "convenient" angles where it's the easiest to draw.
No.2665
>>2664
If you have a pet animal, you can always use them really for reference. If you don't, just really use your imagination and use human examples.
I know it's difficult drawing different angles, but with practice you'll be fine.

No.2676
>>2674
Personally I never really practice per se. I just draw whatever I feel like and aim for the stars whenever I do it. If I run into a problem, I spend time trying to get it right, looking at references and tutorials if need be (although I'm really stubborn about not using references as anything but the last resort). I often get lost in drawing and hone the same thing for an entire day because I'm not satisfied unless I figure out how to do it right. Although sometimes I just run out of time or get tired of it.
This has always been my way. Forcing myself to practice for the sake of practice never really sat right with me, I'll just get bored and give up. Though I guess I do things like >>2643 every now and then, and there's been a few times when I really studied human references, but it's always because I have genuine curiosity and it's what I want to do most.
Also, save images that you like something about, even your own drawings. They can help you steer into the right direction.

If it's asymmetrical, left-right wouldn't be redundant. For example, the pic in >>2647 has the ears in an asymmetric position, which would result in different positions for each side. Alternatively, assume a snide sneer, only one side of the mouth raising in disdain. Depends on the situation.
I suppose one thing I've seen done is making a quick and dirty model with simplistic shapes in a 3d modelling program, then using that as reference for poses. Though, at that point, I'd find myself wondering if I should just fiddle with making a 3d model instead.

>>3109
The majority of Kemono tuff is essentialy drawing an anime girl and give her a snout in the form of a downward triangle, and some curves on the cheeks. The snout tend to be only really visible when the character is facing sideway.
However you may when want to make the snout visible even when facing 3/4, depending on your tastes, the species, and the degre of "animaleness" you want to give your kemonos.
Amakuchi's way of drawing is a good compromise I think.

Thanks. I like amakuchi's stuff. Any other artists worth checking?
And as for male characters? Any specific details (besides the fact that they are usually more beast-like)?

Like you said, males tend to be more beast-like, I don't have much details about them, and I mostly draw female tbqh. You can draw them like female I guess, like most generic anime male caracters are often androgyneous save for more "straight" lines.
My general advice is to study the gimmicks from artists you like, and above all, to study realistic/general way of drawing in the ame time, you don't want to end up like those deviantartist than cannot espace from the style they took 5 years to emulate (even amakuchi can draw pretty cool humans pic related)
Check out loomis to learn how to draw, he is pretty famous on halfchan's /ic/ : http://www.alexhays.com/loomis/
For Kemono artists my favorites are ro and kishibe for cute kemololis, and Kazuhiro for his personnal style and long snouts (shinobe also).
Sindoll is an unmissable too (the 4th pic on my post above)

You should check out Kikurage and Liki, both have a unique style. Kikurage's stuff is a bit more bestial with really pronounced snouts.

You're right about male kemono being more beast like. I noticed that they have a lot more volume than female kemono. (see: >>2758)
I would tell you to lifedraw, study from books, and draw irl humans since it'll make kemono drawing easier, but they're both activities that you have to feel really passionate about. As >>3113 said, try taking elements from artists that you like.

So, what exactly makes kemono, kemono?
Like, because, I thought it was just where it was from, but is it an actual art style in itself? And if so, what ends up being the different lot, then?
I mean, I've noticed different characteristics between western stuff, sure, but I don't really know what's properly consistent.
No.3215
>>3212
here's something for you. It's got a completely different color scheme because I can't into color, but you could probably do it better yourself with the linework.
>>3213
I always saw it as distinctly "eastern" furry art, which generally means smaller noses/snouts and larger eyes. generally they have a lot more fur too.
No.3216
>>3213
It's pretty much just the style. Imagine the difference between "anime" and "cartoon", it's very similar (and likewise, there's people who disagree on what the difference is). It's very difficult to describe what the difference is exactly, but at the same time it's pretty easy to see if you know what you're looking for. Most if not all of the difference is in the face, although there are some other characteristics that are more typical for one or the other. For example japanese design and fashion and art techniques(e.g. lineart) etc are more common in kemono.
And of course there's some gray areas, it's not a black and white difference.
Some people say it's more than just the style, but I really don't think so. I browse pixiv in about equal amounts or more than FA/DA, and other than the style and the cultural differences that influence the subject matter, I haven't noticed anything in particular that differentiates the two. Even Pixiv adds ケモノ(kemono) into the search if you search for "furry".

Makes sense, I guess. I certainly can tell the difference between the two, but since so often different artist vary techniques it's hard to determine what is consistently the contributing factor. The other fellow mentioned generally more fur, that's probably a pretty big one, as many western versions are flat to the point that the fur is indistinguishable from strange colored skin.
I think the anime v cartoons example is probably the best way to think of it, though. Certainly simpler.

Oh actually I just thought of a real difference when I opened FA (although it probably doesn't matter in this case).
I think the term "furry" is more lenient towards animals. Take for example pic related, we would be much more likely to label it as "furry" than japanese people would be to label it as "kemono".
Even that line is pretty blurred though, I've seen some pretty animal looking things in the kemono tags (especially monsters).

you might be able to define them as specifically a animal-human hybrid, rather than an anthropomorphic animal.

I don't know about the snouts part. "Eastern" artists have always done snouts in a more interesting manner in my opinion. The snouts aren't always small either.

Something of a major bit, come to think of it, is that most the time, kemono stuff is more animalistic. Western stuff tends to be very humanoid in design, usually for instance having proper fingers, human legs, and that ilk.
It obviously varies greatly, of course, so it is hard to say.

Drawfags as in actually posts drawn stuff, or just people who draw occasionally?
I don't really draw much that I post since I haven't got a scanner or one of those drawing computer doodads.

I've noticed that in simpler kemono art, like >>3279 for instance, you can't really see the muzzle from the front. To make up for it, the head's shaped a bit funny, and there's usually bits of fluff extending from the cheeks.
If I were trying to draw something in that style, how should I go about shaping the head so that it looks sufficiently beastly, for a lack of a better term?
Would using a rounded square as a base for the head rather than a circle be a good idea? I have no real experience drawing faces so I can't judge for myself.
