I agree that mixing 2d and 3d usually results in glaringly obvious inconsistency. It can be done well, but since it's usually done to save money the extra effort to tweak the 2d and 3d styles to blend together usually doesn't happen.
Actually after typing that I realize I can't recall an instance of the 2d and 3d images not standing out against each other. I'm sure it's possible, though, but equally sure it will hardly ever be polished to that point.
