What's up with all these newer mecha anime using CGI? CGI looks out of place most of the time and usually has bad frame rates.

feels bad man

Agreed I can't stand all this cgi in the mecha lately, it really breaks my immersion.

 No.4632

Trying to save money. Supposedly CGI is cheaper for the studios to use. I don't mind if it's done well.

pic not relared, right? The only cgi in 00 was ships, all the MS were drawn.

One big problem with it is that some of the cooler scenes have always involved mechs interacting with normal people which gets really weird with CGI

Could you imagine this in CGI?

 No.4638

As the other poster said, it cuts costs. While I prefer hand drawn to cgi, a solid concept or execution can drag me through the worst low budget cgi the nips can throw at me.

The gifs are kind of related. I mean, the subject is 2D mechs. And I didn't want to look at the abomination called CG Mecha.

Oh, ok. I've just seen people before who thought the 00 ms were cgi. Too on-model, not enough QUALITY, idk.
I agree that mixing 2d and 3d usually results in glaringly obvious inconsistency. It can be done well, but since it's usually done to save money the extra effort to tweak the 2d and 3d styles to blend together usually doesn't happen.
Actually after typing that I realize I can't recall an instance of the 2d and 3d images not standing out against each other. I'm sure it's possible, though, but equally sure it will hardly ever be polished to that point.

That already looks jarring. I've seen it done in the Dynasty Warriors games, it actually looks nicer, partially due to being on model, with a proper scale

S1 00 had fucking awesome animation and designs, aside from the PEWPEWPEW GN-Xs. S2 dumbed them down because the animators said it was too hard, and the otaku said they weren't "gundam-like" enough. Fuck them in the mouth, it's their fault we got the Seravee instead of Virtue 2: The Return of Virtue

 No.4665

>>4659
Ehh the designs were good but some of the animation veered into sparkles and laser bullshit everywhere. I really prefer Missiles and Machine guns over beam weapons just because of the inherent Kinectivness of them.

 No.4681

>>4665
I usually do, any game with the option I run melee and kinetic weapons over energy based, but Gundam has had a good track record of illustrating the intense heat of a beam weapon. The sparkles came in force in S2, when the 00 showed up and sparkles became magic.

Yeah 79 might as well be called QUALITY Gundam.

A game has the advantage of everything being polygonal though. In an anime you'd either have to a: make all humans CGI all the time (ughh) or b: make them CGI for these scenes only, which is extremely weird.

How about C: A show that has no humans at all?

The post was in response to how CGI makes mech/human interaction difficult.

People have merely forgotten how amazing hand-drawn mecha/spaceships can look when done right.
