I rarely see Gunbuster/Diebuster discussed anywhere, so I'm gonna give it a try here. How do you guys feel about this precursor to TTGL?
No.7309
It's shit, like TTGL and every other Gainax anime

Gunbuster is great. Diebuster is shit.
No.7312
It's fantastic (and so is TTGL for that matter).
Sadly it didn't have quite enough "umpf", like FLCL, but it was definitely up there.
Ironically, though, although that may be lipservice to the original, the main characters development is the weak point of the series.

No.7320
That's fair and all, but just saying it's shit is merely a worthless opinion. Name your favorite animu and I'll call it shit, does that mean anything other than me being an asshole?

I agree, though, Gunbuster and TTGL are both fucking fantastic. I haven't actually seen Diebuster yet, but it's on my "To Watch" list.

>>7328If you liked Gunbuster and TTGL I
heartily recommend Diebuster. In fact: why are you reading this? Go watch it you dink. It's only like 3 hours long so there is no excuse.
(Also, for all the fantasticism and awe, Diebuster still didn't have the punch that some of its predecessors had.)
No.7346
I god damn love Gunbuster. I'd go so far as to say it's my favourite anime.
Diebuster not so much, but it was still entertaining.
No.7350
One thing unites all people who have watched Diebuster; Nono is love.
No.7351
Gunbuster is definitely in my top 10.
Questions though, why is ep6 not in color until the end? At one time I thought it was to enunciate the hopelessness that their fight was supposed to encompass, but I'm not sure anymore.

From an interview:
"On the decision to have the final episode of Gunbuster in black-and-white…
ANNO: When you have color, you have an extra dimension of information. Color would have gotten in the way of the sense of scale we wanted to portray with the black hole bomb. Also – no one had ever done it before."
No.7649
Diebusters whole gimmick was the shamalan TWEEEST at ep 4. It was also way too crowded and messy with these shitty ass characters nobody cared about.
The Tycho episode was horrible.
No.7662
Gunbuster is fantastic, I kind of wish that it had been longer so that I could have seen more of the namesake mecha in action, but that might have spoiled its pacing somewhat. Gunbuster itself might be my favourite mecha design ever overall.
Diebuster I watched immediately after finishing Gunbuster, and I felt a little let down by it. Even though there are close similarities between Gunbuster's and Diebuster's plotlines, they otherwise feel really different. Like, Gunbuster at least makes an attempt at a semi-grounded / authentic look and feel (at least in the first few episodes) whereas Diebuster has a deliberately overblown aesthetic with outlandish-looking technology and zany character designs and talking cats. I'm also not a fan of most of the spaceship / mecha designs at all.
That said, this is mostly me judging it as a follow-up to Gunbuster and not on its own merits, which is probably a mistake because the two were released really far apart. Besides, it has plenty of positives as well. Nono was annoying to me at first but grew on me a lot by the time the end came about. Some of the action was really good too, especially in the final episodes. I feel like it's much more like TTGL than Gunbuster is. While I didn't like it so much in the context of a Gunbuster follow-up, I bet that it's a lot better if you watch it separately from Gunbuster.
No.7668
I made the mistake of going into Diebuster looking for More Gunbuster, so I didn't like it. It's okay I guess, but I was really looking for More Gunbuster, not More FLCL Guest Starring Gunbuster.
If it had been Another Thing Like FLCL and then the big swerve was that it was a Gunbuster sequel all along I probably would have liked it a lot more.

I was fortunate to watch Diebuster long after Gunbuster and it definitely helped. Diebuster is enjoyable on it's own but it's just so radically different from the first show that it just doesn't feel like a sequel, and the original is still the best.

mid90s for GB to when Die came out didn't help
like I said, I went in looking specifically for more of the first thing. So it's like going from OT to Prequels instead of OT to Episode 7

This is subtle bait compared to the gunbuster than on halfchan /m/ at the moment.
