So, /out/, I'm going on a 3-4 night camping trip in a backwoods campsite on the north of Vancouver Island (amenities are clean water and an outhouse, plus the occasional patrol to make sure there're no dead bodies lying around) in February.
I'm an idiot who has only ever gone summer camping at pleb campsites. (Hot water/showers, firewood sold on-site, etc)
I figure I'd bring a week's worth of supplies, but avoid using the easy option unless we'd be fucked otherwise.
I.e., try to find dry wood/kindling in the snowy forests and make our own fires, but if we prove so incompetent that we can't even manage that, we have a camp stove, fuel, and our own kindling, etc, so that we don't freeze/starve. Basically, I want to get into outdoorsmanship, but recognize that I am a blithering yuppie who's gonna fuck up a lot before he gits gud.
Have any of you ever been winter camping? Anything you'd recommend a moron bring that I might not think of?
My buddy is /k/ incarnate, how do I not make him regret inviting me along? He says he'll teach me, but I want to do him proud.

Sounds like it's gonna be snowy. Winter camping is a big challenge compared to 3 season. You'll survive as long as you bring all those extra supplies you mentioned (you're car camping, right?) but still, I'd recommend learning in better weather.

Also make sure you test your gear at home before you take it out, I froze my balls off one night due a shitty sleeping bag, there was no wood for a fire so I found a nearby farm and used a jacket to carry back some crusty cow shit for a fire.

Some other things I like to bring include knives *one swiss army or a leatherman and one flip/buck knife* An E-tool, a good deal of rope *not paracord* and any other basic survival tools. Also, don't forget your mess kit. That is often overlooked.

That's also why most the challenges mention to exclude weapons, ammo and sometimes tools from the money so you don't choose between a back pack, rope, tarp and a flashlight vs a cheap knife or an incredibly cheap gun and a few rounds
