I find it is much better to sleep in a sleeping bag with as little clothes as possible. Sweating in a sleeping bag is going to be bad no matter what the outside temperature is. If you are using a sleep system of any kind with multiple bags, you can adjust as needed for the weather. If not, I would rather line the sleeping bag with a flannel blanket or something than sleep in anything more than my boxers.

i camped many times on the coldest day of the year in quebec (about -40 +wind) in a cheap 20$ 2people screen tent.

couldn't sleep, because my face and feet where freezing, literally, you cant breathe. had to warm up every 30mins. full winter clothing+ 20lbs duckdown sleeping bag.

i seriously think no one on earth can sleep outside without a heater pass -20. if SHTF ever happen get inside a building for the night or you'll die.

No piss bottle? Not only does it save you from getting up at night, it also retains the heat in your urine!

Make sure the bottle is shaped differently than your water bottles. Unless you're Bear Grylls of course.

had 3 layer of wool blanket down. wind is not the problem, its the humidity and the sheer cold of the air. hard to keep your nose for long when you have to keep your face out of your sleeping bag. you got to remember that not everybody keep dry in the woods too. when you've been walking and hunting for the whole day your already wet from top to botom. ive yet to encounter any suitable material for clothing. plastic is shit. wool, cotton and down is best, but so pricey.
even then, after a couple of days you cant keep dry. dont know how people did in the past. boots and glove are the worst part. even the best boot coupled with 2pair of good wool socks dont cut it, glove keep getting wet.

For me, the quality of the sleeping bag was the #1 thing. A quality sub zero sleeping bag is a top investment for any outdoorsman.
