In a normal setting, as long as people keep things optimal, as in, not sending in a billion bullets at once, things are usually pretty fine with little to no lagspikes. But when people start to do trashy things, usually involving vehicles like a tank that shoots said billions of bullets, that's when it begins to lag. SL barely is able to tolerate that kind of resource-hog, you're correct.
I think why SLMC is appealing to the people it does appeal to is because of the vast amounts of customizability you have available. From the sim design, to its layout, to your armor and the guns you have available. Whether you're independent or part of a group, you got a lot of things available to touch. The flexibility allows for all sorts of unique things to happen to an extent, until lord lagalot intervenes. SL combat is not known for being good as a "game" with proper network speeds, but moreso for that mentioned customizability. What >>20047 mentioned could even happen, but that would be at the cost of most likely, a crapton of lag. Perhaps with a more proper engine and some proper scripts, someone could make the perfect customizable combat game. No other games allow you to run around as some wacky wavey inflatible flailing tube man that suicide-bombs nearby avatars without any need to download "mods" or whatever because you immediately get the content of all the textures and models and sounds people upload right away.
Unfortunately, that amount of customizability tends to lead to a lot of disagreements, sometimes (or often) leading to drama, because there's people who want it this way and there's others who want it another way. There's also the usual malicious aspects of SL, copybotters and whatnot, which I'll agree should be taken seriously. Otherwise, there's people not focusing on pew pew but rather some q q. Lately it's conspiracy theories or whatever. To those I say involved in that crap, go play a real game if that matters more than spewing prim bullets for fun.
