Kemono/M3 head is bland as fuck as is, and when you have no textures for skin and literally two colors to your color scheme (black and white lol) it looks so shitty. The mime gimmick gets old so fast.
No.19823
>>19813
Nah, that mime is just a really shit avatar. Bland as fuck, especially on a generic m3 with no textures. There is nothing personalized about it, it's the equivalent of looking up "mime" on google pics.
Anime faggots can't ever ever make any good avatars. They are lazy and think being vaguely cute is good enough. It's not.
Most of the anime faggots at /d/ simply look up whatever kemono item is new and put it on their avatar without any thought. There is no concept, it's all just chaotic garbage.
No.19824
>>19806
Maybe they just like it?
No.19827
>>19813
It's really not original and takes minimal effort to put together. If that's what they find appealing about being a mime, or for others: being a generic M3/Kemono, I suppose that's fine: for them.
To others (and objectively, the most), it seems like a very lazy excuse for an avatar and as such it's easy to characterize a person as being just that. It's so unbelievably easy for others to tell how much effort was put into something.
I can pick a handful of people with completely (or mostly) custom avatars that hang around /d/ and every time, I'll be more interested in associating with them because they're way more unique and generally not annoying. It also doesn't help that the /d/ mimes using the whiteboard happen to incessantly spam it, so I mean, amongst being bland and unoriginal, they're blatantly annoying.
I'm not saying don't be a mime, out-of-the-box M3/kemono, but I'm just saying I most likely won't think you're interesting enough to be anything but troll-bait.

People who make their own unique avatar are rare, and most of them just use something else as a base.
If you don't like people using M3/Kemono, then what makes people who use Maitreya/mesh head different?

No.19831

Then what is a unique or custom avatar by your standards?
Almost everyone at /d/ uses a mesh body and/or a mesh head.
Is there someone that makes everything they use entirely on their own and only for themselves?

No.19834
>>19831
They're probably talking about the textures and outfit combinations used on those mesh bodies/heads.
In this case, the mime outfit/skin seems fairly rudimentary to slap together; hence why the mime is becoming "the meme"-tar.
But dang, as one of the creators of a texture set being used; please keep buying my stuff! I profit off exploiting memes.
No.19836
>>19829
Maitreya / mesh head combination are infinitely better from the get go because way more effort is put into good looking skin textures. And the maitreya is fitmesh so making a unique shape is possible.
There are good kemono / m3 textures, but they sure as hell aren't those mime "textures"
No.19837
>>19836
aren't the textures for the maitreya impossibly expensive though?
No.19838
>>19837
The body comes with a set of default skin tones, special third party skins will cost you 600 - 1000L$
I don't consider this impossibly expensive, even if you add another 1k for tattoos/make up/scars etc.

So it's okay to be an out of the box maitreya user, but not an out of the box M3/Kemono user.
That is double standards.
No.19841
>>19840
Not really, because out of the box kemono skins are bland as fuck without much detail.
Out of the box maitreya has semi realistic skin with pores and nice shading.
+ Maitreya has many more clothing options created by professionals.
Kemono only got melon bunny and torchi, the rest are amateurs who don't know shit about texture baking
No.19842
>>19841
The remark about the level of detail does, in this case just bring up the case of personal preference.
People who wanna look like animus aren't gonna consider the level of detail to their skins for their kemonos and M3's just because that isn't in line with an anime aesthetic.
Whereas people who want to look like photogenic bimbos (because that's all I ever see 'em used for) will care about their skins as those intricate photorealistic details are what matter to them.
It's just more preference on what you want to look like, and you have to consider that person's preferred aesthetic when looking to critique them.
or, y'know, just do what most people do and shitpost wildly with next to no comparable thought.
No.19843

I'm impressed that civil discussion here has lasted as long as it is, but it appears these next two posts consists of trashposts as Nikita had anticipated.
I personally feel Nikita is correct in that regard, it's all up to style.
I will criticize Maitreya for not being modifiable. As someone with knowledge of scripting, I find it important that avatars keep their script count as minimal as possible, or at least within acceptable levels. Having the option to take out or delete scripts when you are done with whatever modification assistance you need is helpful. Whenever I'm done with reskinning something and managing alphas on any mesh avatar, I tend to want to delete the scripts once I'm done. Plus from what I hear, people have had a hard time screwing with the mesh body for whatever reason using the Maitreya's script's appliers. I don't know what reason they had for making Maitreya not modifiable. It's stupid.
You can't really make anything truly unique in SL given the lack of content creators available to do so, unless you were a content creator yourself. Ultimately, it sounds like people here are just being upset because they're a texturer who's not getting as much recognition as someone who just sticks a single color and some small fluff detail onto something and declares it anime.
I mean, if this is really how you feel, go ahead and go out and tell every single person using a kemono or Avatar 2.0 or whatever to go smack themselves.
No.19847
Hey as long as people still buy my generic anime and mime texture sets and products, my wallet is happy!
But srsly:
I think it should be pointed out; there is a slew of people who do not prefer the 'anime' style. It just so happens that there's a huge group of those who do prefer it which end up in /d/ - or at least, a lot of my sales come from /d/ folks. I actually base most of my releases on the trends of /d/ folks, because it's easy to exploit our particular market (/d/ / Deshima) for some really nice income.
Basing yourself off of another character is pretty unoriginal, but if you can pull it off: all the power to you. If you can create a totally unique character that isn't resemblent of something "already out there", you score big points in my book.

Vagak here.
The mime pretty much was my own unique idea for a while, with some inspiration taken off of Space Station 13 and someone on Tumblr and deviantArt known as Nuclearmime, that pretty much everyone jumped on the bandwagon of. I don't mind it at all though. I like the idea of others making their own mime. I can understand if things end up being their own nuisance though.
I estimate that at least 7 other people have also made a mime avatar, but chances are there might be people that I don't even know that spotted me and decided "hey that's cool".
I am curious who you might be though, because most of the stuff I purchased isn't actually that mime-related. If nothing else, I purchased a beret, some armwarmers, and Utilizator's stockings at first. Everything else I personally retextured given the content creator's provided modding kits, some of the textures which I lent to the other people who also made mimes.
But yes, otherwise I'm patient zero of the mime epidemic in Deshima, and I like that others are borrowing from me. I don't think their aim is originality anyways, but just doing what they consider is fun. Fun is fun.
Also, for the record, >>19811 , I only got two to three avatars that I stick to. They've all been successful.
