It's kind of weird in a way, that the only real pagan religion left is Christianity now.

If you look at Catholicism or Orthodoxy, they have pagan-like rituals, their priests are thought to have some magic power to make sacred sacraments that you can eat to purify yourself (wine / bread). They sanctify baptism and marriage ceremonies. They wear strange clothes in ancient styles. They are basically druids.

Christmas and Easter are pagan festivals mixed with Christian symbolism. Christians are more pagans than pagans are today. And they actually believe in their theology, the spirit world, life after death, while modern pagans have reduced Thor and Zeus to anthropomorphized projections of human virtues, not to be taken literally, but to be thought of as "ideals" of some sort.

It's really shocking, but Christians are the only pagans left.

I don't believe in this, I think of the gods as actual beings, i believe in life after death and a spirit world, I believe in Pagan theology. Don't judge all Pagans on a few fedoras.

I have respect for Christian ritual and aesthetic, which is all purely European, but not its teachings, which are Israeli

> I think of the gods as actual beings

Can you elaborate on this? What properties do they have, what do they do, can they intervene? Where do you get your info etc

I don't pretend to know the exact nature of the gods but I know they are real and sentient creatures that are much older and more powerful than we are. Each god has their own properties and effect on human society and the natural world, they each fulfill a function, Thor gives use lightning and Odin gives us fury and wisdom. Yes there are scientific explanations for these events but I don't think that removes any spirituality from them, science tells us how, not why. And my info is history, lore and archaeology. Germanic Paganism was alot more complex than people realize, and it was not all wiped out and reduced to fairy tales, a great deal can be read that fills a very complete picture of what Germanic Paganism was.

I believe the Gods do intervene just from personal experience, but if that were true Christianity would not have taken hold in Europe. Perhaps the Gods saw it fit for us to become Christian for a while, why I don't know, it is not my place to question the Gods, but to serve them and carry out their laws, and to model myself after them in hopes I may become more like them.

also, because of my studies and of personal beliefs and analysis, I believe that most of the gods are ancient, distant ancestors of humans. Whether this means humanity comes from a race of gods or whether humanity has the potential to ascend to godhood, I do not know. I believe that many have ascended to Godhood and become one with the aspects they created. As is said in Grimnismal….

Now am I Othin, Ygg was I once,

(he goes on to list several dozen names)

…All have become one with me.

It seems to imply that many beings have combined into one God, Odin. My speculation is that Odin is an extremely ancient being, originally non-human and above humanity, but over thousands of years various humans have proved their worth to him and ascended, becoming one with him. Perhaps even your Christ-god is just the "new" incarnation of Wotan, but there have been many more throughout time.

the reason I say this about Christ, in early Germanic Christianity, such as in the Dream of the Rood, Christ is NOT described as the Son of God come to earth. He was thought of as a mere mortal man who, through his faith and selflessness, became one with God once he was crucified. I am not Christian but it is a very interesting belief and one that seems to reflect on the early Pagan worldview.

This sounds really pathetic. So if Islam becomes dominant we should just convert and cover our women in garbage bags?

>>6297

yes that is kind of interesting and sometimes I see Christ like that, kind of like a buddha who willed his own divinity

The Pagan spirit never died. Christianity was at least semi-compatible with Paganism and so part of it lived on. If Islam took over it would completely destroy any remembrance of Pagan culture so that is not a fair comparison. I am not saying we should accept defeat. The usefulness of Christianity has played out and the old gods call for us to return to it. The Gods want us to do things for ourselves, not call on them for help, although calling on them doesn't hurt. Do not mistake my pondering for submissiveness.

My theory is that gods are a combination of many spirits (or something like that) from all the ancient kings who would take on the role of that God.

Since gods don't care about individual problems but rather the society as a whole, it makes sense because they were once kings of the society.

>Perhaps the Gods saw it fit for us to become Christian for a while

I respectfully disagree, the Gods don't decide the fate of humans.

Our fate is already woven at birth, and our lives are woven day by day.

The day you take action is the day you were always meant to take action, the gods would have helped if they were meant to.

We, as a people, failed and have to take responsibility for that, we can't go blaming the gods for all that ails us.

Just exactly how much of what Varg says can be taken at face value?

I don't doubt his sincerity, but something is amiss when he cites his own books as source material.

I wonder how much butthurt that's caused already.

And here's an article by a Christian priest explaining why his religion is the "best".

It's pretty laughable.
