Welcome to paint and primer funposting general

>Con season is coming up, what are you guys hoarding your shekels for?

For those of you just joining us, please read this guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

>"If you're new, you're gonna !@#$%^&* up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!"

And a handy guide to other types of plamo:

The current thread is still over 300 posts away from the posting limit, which is 750.

This thread's been in storage for ten months now, time for it to finally be used.

What are you anons working on right now? I'm building a Jehuty Orbital Frame. The model quality isn't great, but paint should hide that.

I have stuff for scribing, but I need something for general use cutting/carving like a chisel and .5mm seems like an ok width to start with.

Still slowly working through my metallic build burning, busy day

I always wanted to try the ZOE games

Pretty amazing what you can do when you think out the non-builders and shitposters to a min. Gotta wonder if the admin for this board is even active to help out if shit goes sour anymore.

>Pretty amazing what you can do when you think out the non-builders and shitposters to a min.

I think you mean "take out the non-builders and shitposters"?

They're a big problem on 4/m/, I'm glad this board has so few shitposters.

>Gotta wonder if the admin for this board is even active to help out if shit goes sour anymore.

Dorkly is this board's owner, he's still active.

I've got a gouf custom, Rozen Zulu, and a zaku IIF2 to snap build. I have my other zaku IIF2(pictured in the OP actually) pickling so I can later get that paint off and try again(I have an airbrush now so hopefully I won't muck it up as bad). I need an extra shield for the Waff sniper joe conversion and it looks like I'll need to order another kit to get it so that project will have to wait.

I got all the tools for kit painting but so far I've just done a lot of snap building so it may be time to start going back and giving my kits the proper treatment.

really waiting for the Divers suits. Already eyeing the AGE-2 Magnum

Nothing currently. New to the thread, so when I start work on something (maybe tomorrow) I'll post something worthwhile.

So what's a good centerpiece MG? I've built a handful at this point and want a particularly nice one to display.

I have the Nu Ver. Ka for mine currently

Yeah thats the SEED DOM. Probably one of the laziest of their 0079 knockoffs.

Repost from previous thread

Okay, could someone explain why pics 2 and 3 look so much different in terms of reflectivity? I used the same paint, topcoat, and thinned the top coat the same, and applied it using the same airbrush in similar application and conditions and yet they turned out different. Could there be any reason for this? Besides shit luck that is. Also rate the rest of it. I know the yellow parts are pretty poorly painted, especially the attempts to fill in the black areas, but my masking skills are not the greatest. Also the decals could have been applied better (and I completely forgot about the concept of mark setter).

You better throw an LED in there.

>Okay, could someone explain why pics 2 and 3

1 and 2, I mean

You might have put different amounts of the paints and thinners on each side.

Nah, that's a GN Tank, not an actual drive.

No, I didn't.

no, >>19214 and >>19220 look like shit just slapped together to make a fucking clusterfuck of parts to where they're unrecognizable as gunpla.

the gaming console gunpla actually look like someone put a ton of time and effort trying to make them as accurate to the consoles as possible, even going as far as to make custom screen decals for the GB balls with Tetris and pokemon screenshots.

>awful attempts at detailing with the sharpied on writing

did I say "good"? no, it's "a decent attempt" at best but at least they put more effort into it than fucking >>19220 and >>19214 who just slapped a bunch of parts together to make some Michael Bay looking over designed garbage. at least >>19239 still resemble actual fucking mobile suits.

Except the paint jobs on those look a lot better than the shit paint jobs on >>19239 so no THEY actually put in more effort than the fucking Sharpied on writing.

those are clearly written on with a fine tip gundam paint marker or detailer pen. sharpie would look much shittier.

Chinks love this kind of shit for some reason.

Every Chinese build I've seen looks like a clusterfuck on legs.

The Chinese are good at complexity and skill, not so much aesthetics.

I really don't know what that guy's fucking problem is with those builds.

Except it looks fucking shitty. If they actually cared about it looking good they'd get some custom waterslides or at least try to make a mask to paint on the letters.

>shit paintwork

>shit detailing

>lack of masking means messy borders

Those kits are a good example of an ok execution of an idea that's pretty gay tbh.

> the guy I'm painting it for loved it.

Who gets other people to paint their kits?

Don't use niggerspeak, please. Before you know it you'll be bix nooding

while I agree the Super Famicom ground type is the weakest of this group of customs (opting for painted on buttons rather than sculpted like the rest of them) I will say the RX-78 Famicom does look much cleaner (aside from the text) with custom molded details on the shield and accuracy to console details.

The Genesis/Megadrive hi-mock has slightly cleaner text and more custom sculpted bits on the forearms than any of the others in this group. The Game Boy Balls have he cleanest, text (though that's not saying much) custom molded buttons and power light, clean details, even custom screenshots used in the screen/window for extra effect.

probably the best overall is the Saturn Kampfer. very clean paint, no text, custom molded details on the forearms, the disk chain mines are a little sloppy but I can slightly overlook that as it's probably just meant to be "generic Saturn disks" rather than specific games.and to that end it works.

overall I give these a 6/10, the custom sculpted detailing and attempt for accuracy to the consoles are what I liked about these. these probably wouldn't win any competition by a long shot without, like you said, custom water slides or masking/spray paint stencils for the text to make the text look much cleaner and crisper but if these were done just for personal enjoyment of doing it then these are passable for a personal collection.

This hobby sadly has more toy collectors than painters.

I hate toy collectors, I don't know why.

Please leave our board, you fucking newfag. Abbreviations aren't "niggerspeak"

The origins of "smh", "tbh" and "fam" all come from black internet culture, specifically Twitter and Facebook.

>painting a gunpla for somebody else

I don't care if you're getting paid or not, that sounds awful. I'd hate doing all that work for somebody else.

That said, it looks good. Soulless, but good. How long did it take overall?

You're completely wrong but let's not derail this thread into aggressively insulting each other, we're not /v/.

Was halfway through priming this Hyakuri for a repaint when I stumbled upon an old trashed Evangelion 01 LMHG kit from like 1997.

I cut, filed, sanded and re-purposed the neck piece as a new head and the bazooka as a fixed gun because I have an unhealthy obsession with mechs with oversize weapons, especially fixed artillery/cannons.

The neck had a ball joint that fit just perfectly in the Hyakuri's neck socket and the bazooka even fit snugly into the backpack with no need for filing/cutting, but I will fix it down properly when it's painted, probably via rods through the little expansion slots in the top of the backpack.

what will the mine become

a can of beer nuts

an oxygen destroyer

a spray can?

Dunno right now.

Perhaps an oxygen tank or a bomb.

Maybe an ammo drum for a minigun.

Ended up using it as fuel tank attached to the backpack via a little Zaku mouth pipe looking thing I had leftover from another kit.

That's dope. Mechs look so much better without arms.

File: 852160377de56ad⋯.jpg (811.28 KB, 3564x2801, 3564:2801, zaku pickling disaster.jpg)

After after botching my zaku paint job(included in the op image) I left my zaku in a jar to pickle to prep for getting the paint off and trying again. Due to things I kind of forgot about it and it's not looking good for the zaku.

Update: terrible news, even months of soaking wasn't enough to weaken the paint. The gold and purple comes off with a stiff toothbrush but the black won't budge. I can try sanding it off with a dremel but this will be a massively time consuming process with no guarantee of success. This Zaku may be doomed. Does anyone has any suggestions?

Sanding seems like the best option, even if it's just to make for a rough surface since the black already acts as a base colour.

That is, if you're just redoing the same colour scheme and not something entirely different.

Glow effects aren't too difficult to do. Dark base colors, edge highlight.

That is a really cool model.

Just buy a new kit to paint you sick fuck! What did that Zaku ever do to you?!

Why anon, I cannot simply abandon this zaku. I will save him, and there is no cost too high.

I threw a scrap build together and tried some new things. Found out what not to do both in making a resin base as well as sponge chipping.

The filter and streaking came out great though. Really looks like a grimy old piece of shit.

Straight built the RG Unicorn.

I gotta say it's way better than I thought it would be.

It's essentially a 1/144 MG. Hell, I'd even say it's better than the MG.

I'll probably just get some of the waterslides for it because some of the bigger decals have really noticeable borders.

Looks really great, you've got nice detailing.

Progress update on my Hyakuri Striker kitbash.

Rear thrusters are removed because they're a bitch to get out and I don't want to damage them in the process.

The legs are from the Kotobukiya Raging Booster and allow the thing to actually stand upright with no support when stretched out, even with all the added weight on the backpack.

Still planning on adding a radome and some fuel tanks.

Maybe even scratch build an auxilliary vulcan gun.

So I just got my first two gunpla yesterday. A HG Geara Zulu and a MG Jesta.

I have the guide open and am looking through it, yet I'm always afraid of fucking up. What are some common fuck ups you guys had when you were new to this and how can I avoid them?

Also, do gunpla need to be painted out of the box or can I simply do panel lining? Any tips?

I fucking sorted by reply count instead of bump. Fuck.Anyways, this is not related to gunpla but more towards using paints on different surfaces. Would repainting this metal piece with clear coat red retain the metallic feel? I got an airbrush so figured why not but I don't know wether spraying some Tamiya Clear Red would get rid of it's metallic feel.

Also, what paint is good for spraying metal parts in general like aftermarket parts for plamo? I know Hotwheel hobbyist use a different type of paint to retain their metallic feel but what is it actually? It's not acryllic right since it would create a more plastic-y feel?

Considering the type of paint you're using, I assume it would as long as you don't go overboard with how much paint you apply.

What I think you want is a metallic paint, but I have no experience in using that so I can't tell you much about it.

If you paint that with clear red it will come out purple but yes it will retain the metallic sheen. If you want metallic red you're going to need to paint it chrome first.

I remember seeing Tamiya metal primer somewhere.

Also this >>19647

Gonna have to go chrome silver first.

>Considering the type of paint you're using

Tamiya Clear Red. It's acrylic

I plan on using paint stripper to strip the blue and then use the Tamiya clear red. My worries is that it would actually get rid of the metallic feel.

Also, any car modelist here mind giving me some tips? How do you get the same finish as how some real cars do with the light shimmer it has?

You'll get a much nicer candy effect out of a colored metallic than a chrome.

Just my advice.

Does Samueldecal still do custom waterslide decals? Kinda wanna get some done up for my MG GM Sniper and GM Command.

Those spoons are looking pretty good, Satan.

can confirm, colored metallics work wonders, especially on bits that you want to pop. (optics, sights, crests, blades, emblems if you're hand drawing them, etc.) and metallic colors are always a solid option when going for a custom paint scheme.

That's an accurate term, I want to fucking eat them.

Hmm, but would it retain that sweet metal feel though? Since that piece is actually metal.

Also what brand paint is that metallic color?

Eating plastic is bad for you anon.

The metallic blue is Mr. Color GX metallic blue.

Another painting help. How do you get this finish? I never knew how to get a good satin finish. Most tutorials online only explain how to use matte and gloss. How do I get the finish in pic related?

There are 2 options.

1- paint it with a clear red over metallic or chrome. Then go over that with flat coat.

2- mix a pearl powder into a clear paint.

rip zaku

Use Super Clean. I don't know for sure if it'll work with the paint you use and the plastic gunpla are made of but a day of soaking tore the paint right off my warmahordes models while leaving them unharmed.

Man those decals are fucking crisp. What kind of topcoat/setting solution did you use?

I was actually pretty happy. I used it and the RD as a reference. The HG was really important for making the ankles on the MG work.

I'm working on an HG Leo sniper now, and I actually took the butt design I used on the MG and scaled it down for the HG, so it's kind of a poetic justice.

Here are some pics of it (in the gorup pic, it's the guy with the eyepiece) as well as some other things I've been working on lately.

Also, I don't mean to shill, but I did create a Discord server if any of you guys are interested. I haven't been able to post as frequently on 8ch these days due to work, but Discord has been a useful medium for me.

Plotting out my next project; a kitbash of the Byakki from Ring of Red.

Did a rough draft of what it's gonna look like.

The main body is a HG RGM-79 that's gonna get plaplated to hell and back (if anyone can suggest a better base kit, please do).

Head is from the Graze Custom with some shit chopped off and will probably add other detail shit on.

Feet are modified from the ugly-ass Galbaldy Rebake.

The shoulder will either be a zaku shield or I'll just plaplate it.

As for the cannon, it's based on a King Tiger, so I will have to see if I'm willing to pay out the ass for a kit just to use the gun for the kitbash.

Maybe I can use the de-gunned hull of the tank in a diorama or something.

Thinking on it, the Ez8's body is almost a perfect fit and the Jegan's feet are better and probably a much cheaper kit.

Maybe it has to do with your barely-there effort, every single time, and how much you fellate yourself over your non-work.

Well Mysterious Cloaked Figure W is either a powerful mystic being able to cross realities at will…

…Or just a crazy hobo.

Either way, it's best to just nod and back away slowly.

>Maybe it has to do with your barely-there effort

See, this is the shitty attitude that negates the entire point of group builds!

They don't have to be GBWC masterpieces (if you can call grebble piles masterpieces), they barely even have to be considered ART, but the idea is to DO something!

That's why I enter, I know I don't have the scratch building or even painting skills to bring most of my concepts to reality, but creating something is at least better than wallowing in nothingness!

>I honestly can't tell if this is the legit idiot posting, or someone who threw together a shitty mspaint character

The reasons people are laugh at your kits are

>Straight built, didn't paint or even remove seam lines

>Couldn't be bothered to line or wash half the kits

>Your idea of a "build" is just slapping build fighters weapons on straight built kits

>You suck at posing

Notice that terrible visor?

Yeah, that was me MASKING something…

>even remove seam lines

I'm against seam wielding if only because:

>Your idea of a "build" is just slapping build fighters weapons on straight built kits

It locks kits together, making them even harder to kitbash with later,

>Just don't be surprised when you post lazy shit and people mock you for it.

Being mocked is one thing, calling for my outright removal is another.

>>>You weathered that Hi-Mock with a gundam marker

>Its possible to get good results from gundam marker weathering, but this guy just sucks.

It's actually an acrylic paint marker, and I tried to keep it minimal but people then bitched that it didn't have enough.

If you're going to enter a group build, a minimum level of effort is expected, which means a finished product and not something you just snapped together with a vague notion of kitbashing later.

What kind of finish is this? It's matte but its not exactly gloss either? How do you get this kind of finish? Do you spray Flat paint and gloss coat it?

looks like a semi-gloss.

Semigloss is much shinier isn't it? I think this is more like a satin finish.

This thing is fucking edge incarnate, but I'm loving the magenta accents and whatnot.

"edgelord shit for ten year olds" is a pretty comfy niche for robot designs

How do I get this finish? I've been wanting to learn how to for so long. Every time I google how to I get shit results relating to matte or gloss only.

Edge mechs are the only mechs.

What's so edgy about it? The fact it's all black?

It also has many acute edges. Compare with pic related, that isn't edgy at all despite having lots of edges.

I laughed until I remembered how shit my kits are. My biggest pet peeve is when people use kits like the Hi-Mock/GM-GM/Leo and just plug build option parts into it and act like it's special or in any way interesting.

What is that?

The HGAC Leo is actually terrible for part plugging, all it's holes don't have enough clutch power to keep hold of things.

Had to bluetac to keep the Vulcan pods on and ended up using a double male plug and the smallest Gunpla Battle Arm Arms arm to secure the backpacks.

Any one got a pdf collection of gunpla magazines and books in English?

Yeah probably. Ive submitted gunpla to competitions before.

I hope so.

Making the Gaplant's shoulders fit onto the Hazel's backpack and then mounting the psyco's arms on the shoulders probably won't be too challenging, but what will be is modding the Hazel's torso with plaplate because the base suit of that pic is the Hazel Owsla which there isn't a kit of because Bandai hates AoZ.

They could easily have released it as a p-bandai because the only new molds necessary are the chest and that shield.

File: 9057f636b715b3d⋯.jpg (39.4 KB, 458x458, 1:1, blue-stuff-mold-8-bars.jpg)

So I've been wondering. Is there a way to mold clear pieces like you do with regular pieces using bluestuff? My problem is that almost all kits have this colored visor sith them and rarely do they have a uncolored see through visor. I don't like having to paint my visors another color.

An example is the Jegan, if I want to scratch build the ECOAS version while keeping the transparent visor transparent, it would look way off. It pisses me off so much.

I dont see why you couldn't use clear resin to make the piece.

Clear resin using bluestuff? Wont that spill everywhere?

Use a piece of runner to make a pour channel. You can use oyumaru to do pour molds, its watertight.

How is Oyumaru different from bluestuff? Also any decent guides on making pourmolds without any bubbles? I'd imaging using runners would make the hole too small for the resin to flow in without creating an airpocket.

Some progress.

Butchered the backpack and stuck exhaust pipes on it (this will be my "engine".)

Closed up the back of the mantlet with a piece of plaplate and affixed it to the reciever.

Modded the sides of the calves flat with plaplate. It's my first time working with plaplate so it's not exactly symmetrical on both legs because I over-filed a little bit on one but easily fixed. Also build up the rest of the tank with parts I'm not using because it's my first time building a tank and thought I could use the practice.

Did you color it yourself at all? It looks like the plastic was unchanged.
