I had to check for the third time that I wasn't asleep as I was reading Brendon Small's twitter. I just rewatched Metalocalypse, and loved it and how metal, manly, brutal and funny it was. And I'm reading Brendon's twitter and he's 100% SJW, it's not like he's subtle, his twitter contains a ton of Trump bashing and #I'mWithHer.

What the god damn fuck? If a death metal comedy writer is a fucking sjw then I'm done, this might just be an alternative universe.

I just expected different things from a death metal guy who made a show about guys being brutal and awesome, and made some pretty manly metal songs. When I read, "I'm obviously with her guys, if you don't like that then free to unfollow," I just "What the fuck"ed. Makes no sense.

Now, I won't start hating metalocalypse or his music, especially since I watched the opera like 10 times, but it's just disappointing and it will probably mean that his future work will be shit.

Try Sumac and Old Man Gloom.

What One Becomes and The Ape Of God II are particularly great releases that utilize free form passages to crushing effect.

Yes, I suck Aaron Turner's cock.

You may have already heard of these records, but give Scorn by Primitive Man as well as Revengeance by Conan a few spins. Revengeance uses several sections of heavy feedback between riffs with the weight and pace of tectonic shifts, while Scorn features far more atonality, experimental/minimalist guitar work and free ambience.

Well read the lyrics and the ideas behind them a bit and it's pretty clear it's all hating on Christianity.

Standard fare edgy (safe) metal lyrics then. Doesn't really ruin it. I'd have to stop listening to most metal if I were to cut out bands critical of the most popular religion among whites. Christianity is questionable in it's various forms, anyway. I certainly can't count on a Christian not being a cucked faggot by virtue of the fact that he's a Christian. Same goes for Pagans. But when someone says "I'm a feminist", or supports communism in any way, I know I'm dealing with an unthinking, real life NPC.

I'm dreading finding out this band takes immigrant cock up the ass and begs for more, 'cause their albums sound great. Judging by their appearance and nationality it's almost ithout question, though.

Symphonic Black Metal is the best starting point if you want to get into Black Metal. Just jumping right into the deep end may not yield great results. You have to warm up to it. Very well put… because science itself in its fundament doesn't work with facts. The whole point of science is wanting to come up with a system that lets us build logicomathematical models of real world phenomena, that give correct predictions, despite us being unaware of the whole truth about the physical world. And that is the true meaning of the term "scientific theory".

/pol/-oriented Metal coming through.

Death Metal:

- Arghoslent: American Death Metal with thrashy heavy riffs similar to those of Manilla Road. Loads of lyrics about slavery, conquest and, of course, the Holocaust.

- Berserkr: American Death'n'Roll/Groove Metal with incredible production values. Fans of Entombed, '90s Sepultura and Pantera will enjoy this.

- Vaginal Jesus: Hilarious Grindcore with a Seth Putnam connection; hilarious lyrics and nasty riffs abound. The guitarist went on to form a solo-project called Mudoven.

Thrash Metal:

- The Raunchous Brothers: if The Mentors discovered Teutonic Thrash, they'd be The Raunchous Brothers. "Faggot Bolshevik" alone is quite a statement.

- Mudoven: if the Cro-Mags were racist, they'd be Mudoven. Solo-project of Vaginal Jesus guitarist Jim Crow, a purported veteran in Massachusetts hardcore underground. "Back to Africa" and "Green God" are classics.

- Bound For Glory: American RAC legends who fully underwent metalmorphosis on "The Fight Goes On." Every album after is just as great, but the songs here rule. "We've Got Your Number," "Doctor Marten Dental Plan," "Our Voice Is Stronger" and "Welcome" are testaments to the band's fury.

- Death's Head: Australian Thrash Metal with a distinct Hardcore influence. Perfect for moshing.

- Durandal: Slayer fans rejoice! French Thrash Metal with riffs distinctly influenced by Slayer and other American Thrash legends. The whole album is the best France has to offer.

- Frakass: The French Nationalist version of The Exploited. Moshable riffs and a great vocalist to boot.

- Ultimatum: A lesser version of Frakass. Riffs are still good, though.

- In Tyrannos: Slayer-influenced Metal project of German legend Daniel "Gigi" Giese. Loads of lyrics about the Freemasons, WWI, the Jews, 9/11 and other great topics abound.

- Iron Youth: Greek Thrash Metal. Everything else they produced is mediocre, but at least they got it right here.

- Squadron: RAC legends go Thrash here. Plenty of Hardcore-influenced riffage, but "Death Before Dishonour" will make you want to mount your horse and charge straight into battle.

- Коррозия Металла [Korrozia Metalla]: Vulgar Russian Thrash legends. This album is when the band started to let it slip they aren't exactly tolerant. "K.K.K" gives some obvious hints, and the anti-Arab song from the following album would solidify their political stance.

- Коловрат [Kolovrat]: Even more explicit racist Russian Thrash. The playing here is very tight and the music has great production values to boot.

Heavy Metal:

- RaHoWa: A sore subject, but George Burdi sure tried his damndest to channel Peter Steele. This album is pure Type O Negative worship with some awesome songs and terrible songs. The best are "Man Against Time," "Hall of the Heroes," "In the Fires of 1945," "The Last Battalion" and "God Is Dead". The cover of "The Snow Fell" is great, too.

- Honor: Epic Viking Metal with plenty of charging riffs and passages similar to Manowar and Graveland. The English version is superior to the Polish version, so track that one down. For some reason, the Polish mastering is horrible.

- Fortress: Incredible Heavy Metal from down under. NWOBHM-influenced Metal with an epic heavy ballad "Southern Birth, Northern Soul"

- Warlord: NWOBHM-influenced Metal from Skrewdriver guitarist Steve "Stigger" Calladine. Anti-Islamic "Jihad Joe" will make you crack a smile and "The South Will Rise Again" will make you unfurl your Rebel Flag.

- Excalibur: Czech Metal legends. Later albums go into Death Metal territory, but the debut has epic Metallica-influenced riffs and plenty of headbanging sections in spite of the awkward English.

- Buldok: Similar to Excalibur, but much more influenced by Dokken and Manowar, making the album sound surprisingly American. The Czech songs are better, but "Mission Spandau" has this saxophone section that always makes me smile.

- Spirit of 88: Heavy/Groove Metal solo project of a German musician. Catchy riffs in spite of the awkward vocals.

- Bomber: German Motörhead-influenced Heavy Metal from drummer/vocalist Kalle. Plenty of catchy riffs and feral vocals.

- Estirpe Imperial: Spanish Metal legends with Iron Maiden-esque riffs and patriotic lyrics.

- Kontingent 88: French Heavy Metal/Hard Rock with thoughtful lyrics and epic riffs. Easily my favorite out of all these.

 No.84104

Black Metal:

- М8Л8ТХ [M8L8TH]: Russian/Ukrainian Black Metal with a distinct folksy RAC influence. Their latest album has a wonderful blend of clean and harsh vocals.

- Nachtgeblüt: Argentinian Black Metal/Neoclassical crossover project of Eviigne. Previous albums had some classical pieces metallicized, but "Dying Echos of a Past Forlorn" highlights Eviigne's talents as a musician.

- Campo de Mayo: Another project of Eviigne. The music here is much harsher and more direct with fiercely anti-communist lyrics and songs glorifying the regime of Jorge Rafael Videla, infamous for putting communist dissidents on death flights.

- Kristallnacht: Their entire discography on one album. Raw French Black Metal with plenty of harsh tremolo picked lines. Pretty standard.

- Dub Buk: Highly folksy Ukrainian Black Metal with foot-stomping riffs, gang shouts and flutes.

- Grand Belial's Key: A US NS Black Metal classic. Not only one of the most intentionally hilarious Black Metal bands, but also one of the most intentionally hilarious NS Black Metal bands. Anti-Judeo-Christian lyrics with plenty of potshots at Jews and Jesus.

- Fanisk: Another US NS Black Metal classic. Epic keyboard-driven passages and walls of tremolo craft a fantastic atmosphere transporting you to somewhere beyond space and time.

- Absurd: All their classic tunes rerecorded for a new generation. Those who found their earlier work childish, raw and amateurish will appreciate the dedication from the new band to polish the old tunes into something quite powerful.

- Der Stürmer: Harsh Greek NS Black Metal with members active in Golden Dawn. Plenty of fast, furious, tremolo-picked power chords and feral shouts.

- Veles: Polish NS Black Metal classic.

- Graveland: Another Polish NS Black Metal classic. Slow, epic passages crafting an atmosphere of Viking warriors charging into battle with lyrics influenced by Ron McVan

- Темнозорь [Temnozor]: Russian Folk/Black Metal crossover. Pagan lyrics and epic passages with clean and harsh vocals.

- Pantheon: USNSBM concept album. Much of their discography sucks, but they struck gold once with this concept album.

- Spear of Longinus: Australian NS Black Metal with a distinct old school influence. Hellhammer and Celtic Frost fans will enjoy this. Loads of lyrics of Nazi mysticism and Hinduism.

- Genocide: Thrashy Chilean Black Metal.

- Sombre Chemin: French Black Metal with an RAC undercurrent. Imagine early Absurd with Burzum-like atmosphere.

- Totenburg: Triumphant, but fierce German Black Metal that packs quite a punch. Like later Absurd with more aggression and thrashiness.

- Peste Noire: National Anarchist Black Metal with a very faint folksy influence. Plenty of feral vocals and blast beats with tremolo picked lines from hell.

- Aryan Blood: German Black Metal with a distinct influence from old school Heavy Metal. Worth it for "To Build an Empire" alone.

- Mjölnir: Unique German Black Metal with some melodic and symphonic influences altogether crafting a distinct atmosphere. Think old Lucifugum mixed in with Bathory, Enslaved, and Nokturnal Mortum.

- Naastrand: what happens when traditional French folk songs discover Black Metal. Very unique and quite powerful.

- Wolfnacht: Personally, "Night of the Werewolf" is the best thing they've done. Everything else is rather mediocre Darkthrone worship, but the debut has some Absurd influences.

- Thunderbolt: The Polish lovechild of Emperor and Dissection. The atmospheric interludes are implemented nicely, rather than feeling superfluous. In a word, tasteful.

- Bannerwar: To Honour Fatherland has a bright tone elevated by the constant sheen of the guitar melodies, the symphonic regalia of the pianos and keyboards, and the bloodied rasp of its front man. Energetic anthems bearing a semblance to Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse or Dimmu Borgir's Enthroned Darkness Triumphant, though not strikingly so. Don't expect much RAC influences. Even their cover of Blue Eyed Devil's "Eternal Fight" is given a pretty grim spin

What bands did you listen to? If you want to start with the classic stuff try the earlier albums of Darkthrone, Burzum, Emperor, Immortal, Satyricon, Mayhem. If you want more of that you can find hundreds of bands which imitated their style without any change or improvements at all but there are also many bands that took it into their own direction. Definitely listen to Thorns' self-titled release, it's different from the other Norwegian bands since it has some Industrial elements but it's an excellent album.

Another unique band from Norway was Windir, they had a distinct melodic sound with folk and electronic elements but without sounding cheesy like typical folk metal. Plenty of bands have tried to carry on that style, some of them with former members of Windir. Some examples would be Mistur, Cor Scorpii or Sigtyr.

My personal favorite is the German scene, most notably bands like Lunar Aurora, Nocte Obducta (until 2006) and Nagelfar, which aren't quite as low-fi and harsh but often have more refined songwriting, quite varied vocals and really well-written lyrics (though they are mostly in German so you probably won't care). Embed related is one of the greatest black metal albums ever made in my opinion, fairly experimental but very coherent and atmospheric.

The Japanese band Sigh is worth listening to if you want something really weird and avant-garde. There's also a fairly big scene in Eastern Europe with bands like Graveland, Nokturnal Mortum or Mgla but I never really got into it that much.

While taking parts of metal and essentially having a harsher and darker sound than regular punk, it's not enough to consider it metal per se. You could say the same about GBH, who shared certain stylistic elements with Discharge, it sounds metallic, but it isn't metal per se.

Eventually Bones from Discharge would form Broken Bones, which is a more full fledged crossover band, while Cal would take Discharge into terrible glam/hard rock territory.

I've been trying to keep things balanced because close to half the bands on the chart are Black Metal, so I didn't want one genre to be overrepresented. I will keep adding Black Metal bands, but not too many of them.

Finist is kind of silly, but I may add them just as the token NS Power Metal band. Personally, I would recommend "Sin miedo" by Estirpe Imperial.

I can't say I'm familiar with Eldrig, Kataxu, Munruthel, Warhead, Infernum, Benighted Leams or Solar Wisdom, so obviously, I've got some catching up to do.

Of course, I'll add "United Aryan Evil" in my next update since that's sorely missing.

I don't really like Thor's Hammer's material enough to add it to the chart, and the cover of "The Fate Worse Than Death" is painfully stupid.

Likewise, Aryan Terrorism sucks.

Burzum was never a political project, so including them wouldn't make sense. I always assumed Drudkh was another case of guilt-by-association since they never were expressly nationalistic to my knowledge.

As I understand it, Ad Hominem was just really edgy more so than NS by intent. The guy apparently denies being NS, so until I see some hard evidence this was a political project, Ad Hominem stays off the chart.

>I can't say I'm familiar with Eldrig, Kataxu, Munruthel, Warhead, Infernum, Benighted Leams or Solar Wisdom, so obviously, I've got some catching up to do.

Eldrig is the titular solo project of one half of Fanisk. I consider the work of both bands to quite possibly be the epitome of all Metal as a genre in terms of their artistic transcendence and could not recommend them enough.

Kataxu is another "epic cosmic" sounding band, one could kind of describe them as being like a somewhat sloppier/rawer attempt at doing what Fanisk do. Their Hunger of Elements album is the perfect example of a "flawed masterpiece"

Warhead is an RAC/BM side project with Varggoth of Nokturnal Mortm and one of the guys from Honor. Nothing exceptional by any means but enjoyable enough.

Munruthel is the solo project of Nokturnal Mortum's drummer. Quality stuff, if maybe a bit too "pretty" sounding for some people, and the best NM side-project IMO.

Infernum is a Graveland side project of Darken and Capricornus featuring lyrics from Vitholf of Fanisk. As I said I haven't listened to it yet, but with the people involved I'm sure it will be at the very least interesting.

Benighted Leams is Alex Kurtagic's band.

Solar Wisdom is another "epic" NSBM band, although kind of amateurish and not that impressive in execution compared to the actual greats of the genre, but decently respectable in concept enough to warrant inclusion

>Burzum was never a political project, so including them wouldn't make sense

Well I mean many stuff on stuff on that chart, like Nokturnal Mortum - Goat Horns for instance, don't have any "political" lyrics either. I mean like I said maybe Varg is way too obvious to be on the chart, but if nothing else he was the first person in the BM scene to explicitly endorse NS/far-right/traditionalist ideas, and one could maybe even argue that a lot of NSBM bands wouldn't have existed without Varg's indirect ideological influence.

>I always assumed Drudkh was another case of guilt-by-association since they never were expressly nationalistic to my knowledge.

"Ukrainian Insurgent Army" ? Nah, if anything it's the case of the ol' "Nah we are totally not political band" to get journalists to back-off/not hurt record sales, which almost every band with far-right beliefs does to some extent or another.

>As I understand it, Ad Hominem was just really edgy more so than NS by intent. The guy apparently denies being NS, so until I see some hard evidence this was a political project, Ad Hominem stays off the chart.

Like I said I'm not really that familiar with those guys, but just a cursory glance:

"Although Kaiser used NS-related content on Planet ZOG, he claims he never dealt with topics regarding the white Aryan race, but rather with elitist/individualistic matters"

Like I said before, it sounds like typical excuse everyone says. That sounds like Varg being like "I'm not a Nazi I'm an Odalist/Tribalist" or Darken being like "I'm not a Nazi I'm just proud of being white and think Hitler did nothing wrong or Varggoth being like "Slava we are total apolitical band not NSBM even though we're still openly friends with everyone in the scene and play shows for Pravy Sektor and haven't even specifically brought up and denouced are past involving among other things being in a band called AryanTerrorism instead we just wrote an extremely vague facebook in bad english and that somehow means we aren't right wing anymore lol" or Fanisk being like "We are not Nazis, for our ideology is beyond materialistic politics misundstood by plebian mortals, transcendental blah blah etc etc", which is all maybe technically true in some way but is really just PR in a (typically failed) attempt to avoid Antifa or whatever.

I mean even taking that quote at face value the Ad Hominem guy is saying "uh we don't believe in white supremacy or anything we just want to call out the elite jews running the world is all" lmao i mean "Planet Zog" really dude?

Another Update

I can't be bothered to write complete descriptions for the new entries yet, but I'll just leave this here anyway.

Death Metal is critically underrepresented on that chart, so I had to fix it by including more bands. Sadly, most WP Death Metal sucks mightily with the exception of Arghoslent and Excalibur's last two albums. Of the new additions, I can without reservation recommend Plunder & Pillage and West Wall. Kreuzfeuer and Territory are good, but not as strong as the others. Kreuzfeuer tries going for epic Melodic Death Metal with some Groove/Thrash riffs here and there.

I took your advice and added Warhead, Kataxu, Eldrig, Drudkh, Gontyna Kry and Munruthel. After much consideration, I also added Ad Hominem after rereading their lyrics. Yeah, he's not gonna argue his way out of the first album. Can't believe I forgot to include Fullmoon's "United Aryan Evil" considering its historical significance. I heard of Alex Kurtagic's band, but forgot its name. Sadly, Benighted Leams's concept is far more interesting than most of the music, but the last album is much more listenable than the others. Considering Kurtagic's influence in the far-right underground, I added them.

Personally, I like Finist's "Crosses Shall Burn" better than "Awakening", but it was only issued as a cassette, which would look awful on the chart when stretched.

Of the new additions from other genres, I added the Russian Thrashers Crack and Calvados as well as some new German Metal bands Heiliger Krieg and Aryan Rebels.

I didn't care at all for Infernum. From what I've heard, Branikald isn't actually an NS band, but has NS associates. Either way, I kept them off the chart. In their place, I added Sunwheel which reminded me of Kataxu and Eldrig.

We're almost at 88 bands. Any suggestions for new bands, folks?

awesome man glad my recommendations were taken into consideration.

only other suggestion i would give would be to maybe, if it's not too difficult, maybe re-organize he chart? either alphabetical order by band name or organized by sub-genre or whatever to make it easier to read/look through as they seem to be in basically random order

Seriously? That's a bold claim to make for an ostensibly "Black Metal" band that sounds like a generic phat chugz Groove band. That song specifically sounds like blackened Pantera. Yes, I've been slacking on the descriptions, but rest assured, I'll get them written. For now, you can pick and choose any of these at random.

There's a bit of a disconnect here. Metal-Archives calls them Death Metal, but the userbase of RYM deems them Black Metal. Puzzling. Perhaps I'll have to listen to them more to get a better grip.

Either way, that Antisemitex song isn't that good, and frankly, you're in no position to be indignant. Grand Belial's Key, Peste Noire, Fanisk, Fullmoon, Thunderbolt, Drudkh, Nokturnal Mortum and Spear of Longinus have all earned respect from metal subculture regardless of their politics.

You had racist bands in just about every Metal subgenre, but none of them played as instrumental a role in forging the genre like the prominent segments of the Second Wave. It's inevitable that Black Metal will be overrepresented since people with far-right ideas were producing albums at the very outset of the movement. Burzum was arguably the biggest influence considering the cult of Varg's personality, but Absurd played a similarly influential role. Eastern Europe went even further than their Western brethren.

On another note, this song absolutely slays.

If it's any consolation, "she" wasn't on "Screams of Anguish".

There are tons of non-political Grindcore that was around during the early days, although yes, left-wingers played a huge part forging the genre. Fuck, Meat Shits has been making music since the late '80s, and even after Robert Deathrage got doxxed by that cunt who ran some Metal magazine, he's still going strong.

I wouldn't get too worked up over leftists in Grindcore. In the end, it's just a creative arrangement of abstract sounds.

Nothing against the idea of "Christian Metal" or Christians for that matter, but ideological music is shit. It's hard to get past the fact that most of these bands scenes are literal cuck sheds. It's like how a lot of people eventually hate bands like Tool, Dave Matthews Band, etc. not for their music necessarily but because of something off with their fans. The entire Christian scene is this way, including the bands.

So, post some implicitly white, male metal made by dudes who are probably sincere Christians but I wouldn't know it because they're not evangelical faggots. No tryhard straight-edgelords. No Officially Licensed Products of the Assemblies of God Church. The more conservative and traditional the ethos, the better. This should be heroic, masculine, metal that doesn't go full 1488 or larp as music for wood sprites and hobits. Obviously mythological, spiritual, historical themes are useful, but we can't be going full retard. Also, I don't want to listen to some edgy faggot going on about how great belonging to the devil is nor do I care to hear confessional, emotionally self-indulgent ballads. So, don't open yourself this way James Hetfield. Ballads and slow, melodic, even mournful music is fine in metal but it should be spiritually or thematically oriented to resonate with strong, healthy, white dudes, not faggots. It should affirm life and victory, not defeat and death.

Is there metal like this? Is this too narrow a niche? Do i have to start this band myself?

As much as Nu-Metal is (rightly) slagged off, we can't ignore the trends leading to its creation. Nu-Metal stood at the vertex of Hip-Hop, Alternative Rock/Grunge, Industrial Rock, Funk Metal and Groove Metal, all of which were popular on MTV from the late '80s up until '94. Couple that with all those awful goatee'd Rap Rock bands that were building speed and you have the perfect storm.

The following bands were either directly responsible for its genesis or influential-but-not-necessarily-Nu-Metal: Pantera, Helmet, Prong, 24-7 Spyz, Living Colour, Fishbone, Deftones, Mordred, RATM, Infectious Grooves, Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, '90s Sepultura, Alice in Chains, Body Count, White Zombie, L.A.P.D., Korn, Biohazard, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Skinlab, Slipknot, Soulfly, Mushroomhead, One Minute Silence, Powerman 5000 and several others.

Right era, but it's not nu-metal. It's clearly late-Tool / Perfect Circle period hard rock - early 00's stuff - with a dash of Euro-metal theatricality thrown in. Not good. Not bad. Just there. Uninspired to the core, but maybe they're amazing live? It's good that stuff like this exists I guess to keep the flame going, but again, it's not metal.

All those bands fall into the Alternative Metal genre. Nu-metal was the end of that era. And then everything broke up into goth metal, emo and indie as smaller splinter groups. Until those trends died too. Now all new music is electronic except for the occasional "revival"

>Nu-Metal stood at the vertex of Hip-Hop, Alternative Rock/Grunge, Industrial Rock, Funk Metal and Groove Metal

Alternative Metal is Metal influenced by Alt-Rock. Ergo, a subcategory of Alt-Rock.

What's important is that most of those bands were influential to, but not necessarily Nu-Metal themselves. Mordred was a product Thrash bands experimenting with Funk as was Infectious Grooves, a side-project of Suicidal Tendencies. Faith No More was a straight up metallic Funk band until Mike Patton took vocal duties in 1989 and introduced his trademark weird sensibilities. Likewise, Mr. Bungle has all the hallmarks of Mike Patton's zaniness.

We can continue ad infinitum, but for brevity's sake…

Alternative Metal: Alice in Chains*, Deftones, (later) Faith No More

Avant-Garde: Mr. Bungle

Funk Metal: 24-7 Spyz, Living Colour, Mordred, Infectious Grooves, Fishbone, (early) Faith No More, L.A.P.D.

Groove Metal: Pantera, Helmet, Prong, Fear Factory, '90s Sepultura, White Zombie, (early) Skinlab

Rap Metal: Biohazard, Body Count, Rage Against the Machine

Industrial Rock/Metal: Marilyn Manson, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails

Nu-Metal proper: KoRn, (later) Skinlab, Slipknot, Soulfly, Mushroomhead, One Minute Silence, Powerman 5000

Headbanger's Ball aggressively marketed most of these bands with all those crappy music videos, which undoubtedly inspired many young minds to experiment with these sounds in their own creative way.

For the sake of argument, let's say 1994 was the dawn of Nu-Metal's creation. Just listen to KoRn's self-titled album from 1994 and you can clearly hear those styles blending into each other. The music has all the grooves of Pantera blended with some Hip-Hop basslines and downtuned slap bass of their previous incarnation L.A.P.D.

>Alternative Metal is Metal influenced by Alt-Rock

Wrong. Fishbone predates REM's existence and back in 1979 Husker Du was still playing hardcore punk. Alternative metal pre-dates alternative rock. I'll add that Fishbone was an influence on the Red Hot Chili Peppers who in turn were an influence on Faith No More (particularly after Mike Patton joined) In fact Anthony Kiedis hates Mike Patton and thinks he ripped off his style. Look it up, they've hated each other ever since the late eighties. Now those bands really influenced each other.

Nirvana being friends with REM means nothing to the development of alternative metal. They were happy to make it seem REM were somehow mentors because Kurt's real mentor Buzz Osborne (who introduced Kurt and Krist to Dave Grohl and also was part of Kurt's original band) has been shitting on them ever since they got famous. And everybody knows Bleach is Nirvana trying to sound like the Melvins.

And all those shit bands you name fall under the Alternative Metal umbrella. Look it up. Funk metal is a subgenre of alternative metal. Industrial metal is a subgenre of alternative metal (and real industrial is shit like Throbbing Gristle, not "industrial metal without guitars") And thrash with funk influences is part of the thrash genre, don't get it mixed up.

And I'm straight up laughing at you calling Mr Bungle "avant-garde" just because they have some jazzy parts. It makes me think you never listened to actual avant-garde in your life. Mr Bungle is Mike Patton doing his best RHCP imitation and adding random weirdness and even more toilet humor than RHCP.

Here's a classic video for you of Mike Patton, Dave Lombardo and Buzz Osborne shitting on Anthony Kiedis after he got Faith No More booted off a festival where they were both supposed to play. Enjoy! But please stop making these lists of bands and which genre you think they are, nobody cares really. They're all alternative metal and most metalheads don't even like alternative metal Again if you know your history you'd know that Kurt calling metal racist and misogynistic was seen as betrayal because the metal scene originally not only influenced but also supported a lot of the alternative metal bands like Alice in Chains getting to tour with Metallica, and Soundgarden and Faith No More touring with Guns n Roses, this is what actually led to the rift between metal and "grunge" at the time. In the end it's all spoiled rockstars first trying to sound like each other and then pretending to be morally superior.

I like the rest of your post but Fishbone are called alternative rock just about everywhere and RHCP were more inspired by bands like Defunkt. Fishbone were just friends of theirs. But you're right that Mike Patton, especially in his early days, was obviously very influenced by RHCP. The rapping, the dancing and even the hair made him look very similar.

>>90426

I think what seperated nu-metal from their influences was a willingness to conform and the return to machismo thanks to the hiphop and hardcore influences. Alternative bands were supposed to be very unique, elegant and politically correct. Nu-metal took the opposite approach and saw more bands conforming to a certain modern brutish working class style (excluding Linkin Park who were very girly compared to the other nu-metal bands)

>real industrial is shit like Throbbing Gristle, not "industrial metal without guitars"

That wasn't up for debate. It's pretty obvious that Industrial proper has absolutely nothing to do with Industrial Rock and Metal. About the only Metal band I can think of that was influenced by Industrial proper was Godflesh, who cited Whitehouse as an influence.

It's common knowledge that Grunge as a "subculture" was a reaction against AOR, Glam, Thrash and all other major label Rock'n'Roll bands. Kurt Cobain was tight with Kathleen Hanna and her Bikini Kill cunts. And yeah, Alice in Chains has far more in common with Pantera than Melvins or Soundgarden. It's not exactly a secret that Alice in Chains, much like Pantera, used to be a Glam band. Only after they recruited Jerry Cantrell did Alice in Chains become a "Grunge" band. Beyond that, they have nothing in common with Sub-Pop's catalog. Speaking of which, here's Layne Staley in concert with teased hair and skintight clothes.

>Alternative metal pre-dates alternative rock.

What active recording and touring Alt-Metal bands existed in the late '70s, early or mid '80s? Fishbone's early catalog was firmly rooted in Funk Rock, and their heavier sound didn't come until 1988. Likewise, Living Colour's "Vivid" dropped in 1988. I'd really love to hear this.

>>90451

>I think what separated nu-metal from their influences was a willingness to conform and the return to machismo thanks to the hiphop and hardcore influences.

I think this about nails it. Nu-Metal possessed much more machismo than Alt-Metal/Alt-Rock ever had (if they ever had in the first place) on account of their Hip-Hop influences. The Hip-Hop influences from all those Rap Metal and Rap Rock bands was the tipping point leading to the genesis of Nu-Metal.

I personally enjoy this as well. The difference between stuff like a Hill to Die Upon, My Dying Bride, Paramaecium, Extol, and maybe even Crypt Sermon or Jacob's Dream from Vengence Rising or Deliverance is big. I get they want to spread the Word but sometimes an evenhanded approach is a good change. Regardless, anyone can enjoy something Crimson Thorne or Incubus regardless of their lyrical themes.

Like it or not, being a Nazi in public is going to subject you to near universal ostracism, but you still should be able to express yourself without physical reprisal. The guy in question was punching and elbowing random people at the show. You don't get to cry persecution when you're getting violent. He was retarded for not expecting retaliation. I would consider myself too new to the genre to really have gems to recommend. I'm still mostly going through the well-known stuff and developing my ear. I do think that some albums aren't talked about as much as they might deserve, like Malevolent Creation - The Ten Commandments, that albums goes hard. Also Nocturnus - The Key, it is somewhat written off as tech death, but it is spacey and weird, and has constant fast soloing. The weird structure makes it memorable. It's funny you mention Celtic Frost after their glam metal album, no one talks about them after that. But To Mega Therion might be one of my favorite albums I have listened to, so it's something I have interest in.

My favorites would have to be Deicide - Deicide, Death - Scream Bloody Gore (of course), Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, Graveland - The Celtic Winter, Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion, and more its just that most are the well-known well liked bands that everyone loves so its nothing new. Best black metal album of all time. The lyrics are very good and the vocals are extremely original. I listen to this fucking album almost every week. The best songs are:

> The Baphometic Goat of Knights Templar in the 12th Century

> Aleister Crowley and Ordo Templi Orientis

> Cursed Excruciation / The Sinuous Serpent of Genesis (Leviathan)

What makes me love this album is that it's fucking scary. Introductions, vocal style, compositions and all the rest create a unique atmosphere. As the title of the album says, it's a perfect soundtrack to a goetia ritual. I do not understand how he is so underestimated. That's what black metal has to be: scary.

I recommend that you download this album on soulseek at 320kbps quality. You will hear a totally different sound from the youtube version. In the youtube version there are inaudible riffs and other things that make it not possible to enjoy this album as it is.

>Edge of Sanity - The Spectral Sorrows

>In Flames - Lunar Strain

for starting, before you reach the famous tough cookies like Gorguts or Pungent Stench.

It seems people have no idea what Sludge is these days because shit like Isis, Mouth of the Architect, Pelican, Kylesa, Mastodon and Neurosis barely qualify as Metal, much less Sludge.

Sludge = "Vol. 4" + "Saint Vitus" + "My War" + "Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing".

The essential Sludge releases:

Eyehategod - In the Name of Suffering

Toadliquor - Feel My Hate - The Power Is the Weight - R.I.P. Cain (reissued as "The Hortator's Lament")

Dystopia - Human = Garbage

Grief - Dismal

Noothgrush - Erode the Person

These albums have the requisite pacing, atmosphere and tone. If you're not being boiled alive in malevolent riffs over a steady stream of misanthropic, hateful lyrics, then you're not playing Sludge. Add the piercing feedback, shrill vocalist and downtuned guitar for completion's sake.

I've heard lots of arguments that Melvins was the first Sludge Metal band, but that's a complete fallacy to me. Their music is a mix of Grunge and Stoner Rock with hints of Doom Metal, Punk and Hard Rock, but the Hardcore influence is way too minor for the band to be anything like Sludge. Melvins's biggest influence (that is, the B-side to Black Flag's "My War") simply lacks all the necessary elements to be a Sludge album, no matter how important to the genre's development it is.

Another aggravating tendency among supposed Sludge listeners is the tendency to lump various Southern Metal bands into the category solely on the basis of geography; looking at you, Acid Bath. No, aggressive metallicized Southern Rock doesn't make a band Sludge. Corrosion of Conformity, Buzzov•en, Bongripper and Weedeater are not Sludge bands. Weedeater is often listed as Stoner or Sludge, but they are far from both. Though they may often feature marijuana as a lyrical theme, lyrics do not a band make. The riffing is wholly unlike typical Stoner Metal riffing as far as rhythm and phrasing go. Moreover, they feature no Doom Metal riffing nor any Hardcore riffs, so clearly they're not Sludge. Weedeater's riffs are almost entirely Blues based and sound like a Metal version of bands like Black Oak and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Great band, but I wouldn't call them Sludge, Stoner or even Doom. In fact, they're a Southern Metal band in a truer sense of the word than tripe like Alabama Thunderpussy or Texas Hippie Coalition.

I don't consider Acid Bath to be Sludge since they lack the necessary attributes compositionally and aesthetically. A few swears removed and you could hear them on the radio. They're Alt-Metal at most, and they could even be considered Nu-Metal at other times. Mike Sanchez once said, "Our music is commercial in an extreme sense. We need more airplay. To the kids out there listening to NIN, Korn, Tool, Black Sabbath, Ministry, and The Deftones, if you haven't heard Acid Bath then you're still in for a beating." I like how he lumps his band in with them.

In plain terms, their stuff is a mix of Alt-Rock, Doom aesthetics, Southern and Stoner Rock, with some some Groove Metal and Grind riffs thrown in. The riffs cycle through Stoner/Southern riffs, a few Grind streaks, and some slow riffs. All of Sludge's defining characteristics are missing save the bluesy sections which is always present due to the Sabbathian influence; might as well call every Sabbathian Metal band Doom which is a fallacy since Sabbath was never a fully fledged Doom band even under Ozzy. In fact, "Paegan Terrorism Tactics" is a very "happy" album. The uptempo riffs eagerly hands you a smiley sticker once you turn the album on. The few exceptions are simply moody and mellow, not of thunderous impending doom. It can be incredibly catchy at times, causing you to hum a riff or two in your head or to shout "DYING FELT SO GODDAMN GOOD TODAY!".

Another important thing: most songs on "Paegan Terrorism Tactics" follow a verse-chorus structure, a feature that underscores my refusal to deem Acid Bath to be a Sludge band. While other songs don't adhere to that format (in all fairness), they're few and far between.
