The researchers report that rutamycin B — a compound isolated from a marine bacterium — demonstrates significant potency at low concentrations against multiple clinical strains of N. fowleri. Most notably, the compound achieves full potency within just four hours, significantly outpacing amphotericin B, the current gold-standard treatment.

“Current treatments for PAM often act too slowly or carry heavy toxicity,” said Anjan Debnath, PhD, associate professor at UC San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and co-director of UC San Diego’s Center for Discovery and Innovation in Parasitic Diseases. “By identifying a compound that is both faster and more selective, we are moving closer to a treatment that can stop the infection before it causes irreversible damage, which could fundamentally change the prognosis for people who contract this parasite.”

The findings also speak to the therapeutic potential of compounds isolated from the ocean.

“The ocean contains a diverse library of chemicals, and we’ve only just scratched its surface,” said William Fenical, PhD, Distinguished Professor emeritus at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography. “These results are a powerful reminder that the solutions to some of our most challenging medical problems may be hiding in unexpected places.”

The researchers’ key findings were:

• Rutamycin B worked faster than the current standard treatment, reaching full strength within four hours versus 16 hours.

• The compound was 200 to 300 times more lethal to the parasite than to human cells.

• The compound works by shutting down an enzyme that the parasite uses to produce energy.

• When combined with the current standard treatment, the researchers found they could achieve the same results using as little as 3% to 10% of the original dose of rutamycin B.

Beyond its immediate potency, the team believes the structural properties of rutamycin B make it a promising candidate for further pharmacological optimization. Because the infection targets the central nervous system, the researchers are planning future studies to evaluate the compound's ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and its efficacy in live disease models.

While further research will be needed to bring this approach into the clinic, the study points toward a promising new therapeutic strategy for a disease that has historically left almost no survivors.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party began preparing to challenge results from polling stations in Arab cities and towns before voting opened Tuesday morning, with Hebrew news sites on Monday quoting Likud operatives as saying that the party has discussed the possibility of claiming the vote was “stolen” if Netanyahu does not win.

Around 80% of respondents said Macron’s response to the unrest has been inadequate, according to the poll for Le Parisien published on Saturday. The riots also sparked widespread anger, with 58% of respondents expressing outrage.

Macron’s overall approval rating fell to 16%, the lowest since January and down seven percentage points from last month, according to a monthly CSA poll for Le Journal du Dimanche published on Sunday.

The unrest began last month with student demonstrations over teacher shortages, school funding, and deteriorating facilities before spreading nationwide. As trade unions and opposition parties joined the movement, the protests grew into broader demonstrations against soaring living costs, inequality, and cuts to public services.

The unrest escalated sharply on October 17, when around 550,000 people joined the demonstrations nationwide, spilling out into clashes with the police, arson, and widespread looting in several cities.

Immigration also emerged as an issue in public perceptions of the violence. Around 55% believe there is a link between immigration and the October 17 riots, according to a CSA survey published last Thursday.

Last week, Macron responded by announcing a crackdown on public gatherings. Protests deemed unauthorized were banned and limits on marches were imposed – even those organized by recognized groups.

Opposition leaders blamed Macron’s policies for the unrest, accusing him of failing to maintain public order.

Despite the restrictions, the demonstrations continued, drawing around 410,000 people on Saturday, according to Interior Ministry data.

Similar protests took place elsewhere in Europe, with demonstrators in Italy, Belgium, Spain and Portugal voicing concerns about living costs, housing shortages, and public services.

After Western media outlets reported that several EU governments suspected Russia of involvement in the unrest, President Vladimir Putin dismissed the allegations.

“To claim that we are provoking mass protests in major European cities is really going too far,” Putin said, arguing that the accusations reflect European leaders’ inability to address the crisis.

A Minnesota election official went on a Somali TV station on Monday to advertise Minnesota’s nonexistent voter ID requirements by telling all of the illegals that they don’t even need an ID or an active voter registration to vote.

Minnesota law requires voters to be citizens of the United States to vote in state and local elections, but they require no proof. A phone, TV or internet bill qualifies documentation to register– even on the same day.

In an interview posted to Somali TV of Minnesota on Monday, MinnesotaSecretary of State Voter Outreach Director Melanie Hezlip was asked by the station’s Abdirizak Diis what Somali viewers need to bring to the polls this election.

Her answer: nothing.

“If you’re already registered to vote, you don’t need to bring anything with you,” Hezlip said.

“You just show up to your early voting location, which is usually the county office or a city hall. Minneapolis and the bigger jurisdictions have a lot of extra places where you can go, like a lot of libraries or community centers.”

“As long as you’re registered to vote, you don’t need to bring anything with you,” she added.

Even if you’re not registered, she explains, you can still register on the same day without an ID!

“You still have options,” she said. “If you have a Minnesota ID that is updated, that’s all you need to bring with you.”

“If you don’t have that, there is a list of documents on our website that you can find. You still have options to get registered same day,” she continued.

According to the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website, all you need is proof of residence, the following of which can be used. A photo ID doesn’t even need to be valid!

Approved photo IDs (choose one)

The ID can be expired.

• Driver’s license, state ID or learner’s permit issued by any state

• U.S. Passport

• U.S. Military or Veteran ID

• Tribal ID with name, signature and photo

• Minnesota university, college or technical college ID

• Minnesota high school ID

Approved documents (choose one)

Can be shown on electronic device.

• Bill, account or start-of-service statement due or dated within 30 days of the election for:

• Phone, TV or internet

• Solid waste, sewer, electric, gas or water

• Banking or credit card

• Rent or mortgage

• Residential lease or rent agreement valid through Election Day

• Current student fee statement

Another loophole Minnesota allows is its “vouching” program, which allows unregistered voters to arrive at the polling location on election day, register, and cast a ballot without any proof of citizenship or residency if one registered voter “vouches” for them and says they’re eligible to vote. Each voter can vouch for up to eight people.

RIO DE JANEIRO and BUENOS AIRES (CN) — Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro may have fled the country after Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes barred him from traveling abroad, following his defeat to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Sunday’s presidential runoff.

The travel ban was imposed as part of a criminal investigation into Bolsonaro’s ties to Willer Tomaz, a lawyer and longtime friend suspected of money laundering. De Moraes also ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his passports within 24 hours and barred him from contacting Tomaz.

The court order remains under seal, but Bolsonaro himself confirmed the restrictions in a video posted on social media. Bolsonaro failed to surrender his passports by the Tuesday morning deadline, according to Brazilian media reports. Federal police were expected to notify De Moraes of his failure to comply with the order.

According to Brazilian and Argentine media reports, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro crossed into Argentina on foot and was expected to board a private plane for the United States.

Brazil’s Federal Police have not confirmed Bolsonaro’s whereabouts. Argentine immigration authorities said early Tuesday there were “no records whatsoever of Flávio Bolsonaro entering the Argentine Republic,” nor any flight plans involving the Bolsonaro family.

The Argentine presidential spokesman also denied knowledge of any Bolsonaro requesting asylum.

Bolsonaro faces at least two criminal investigations before Brazil’s Supreme Court. In the case involving Tomaz, Federal Police investigators identified suspected financial ties between the two men after examining a phone seized from the lawyer during an investigation into fraud involving Brazil’s social security system. The findings included records suggesting Bolsonaro had access to a bank account associated with one of Tomaz’s companies. Both have denied wrongdoing.

A separate investigation concerns suspected financial irregularities involving Daniel Vorcaro, the former owner of Banco Master, a Brazilian bank shut down by regulators in November 2025 amid charges of financial fraud. Vorcaro has been held in pretrial detention since March.

Investigators are examining a proposed $24 million contribution to “Dark Horse,” a film about Bolsonaro’s father, as part of a probe into possible corruption, money laundering and foreign exchange violations. Bolsonaro has denied wrongdoing, saying the film was privately financed.

The senator’s legal troubles come as he prepares to leave elected office for the first time in 24 years. His Senate term ends in January, leaving him without a parliamentary mandate as of February. Under a 2025 Supreme Court ruling, however, investigations involving suspected crimes committed in connection with public office can remain before the court even after a politician’s term ends.

Renato Vieira, a criminal defense lawyer and former president of the Brazilian Institute of Criminal Sciences, said travel restrictions are precautionary measures intended to protect criminal investigations.

“Fleeing could indicate an intention to avoid serving a potential sentence,” Vieira said.

If Bolsonaro has left the country, Brazilian authorities could seek international police cooperation through Interpol to locate him, although any arrest or extradition would require additional legal procedures.

Rodrigo Brandão, a constitutional law professor at Rio de Janeiro State University, said evidence that Bolsonaro attempted to flee after learning of the court order could seriously weaken his legal position and strengthen the grounds for seeking pretrial detention. He stressed the investigations remain at an early stage and that the senator’s guilt or innocence has yet to be determined.

Brazil’s Constitution generally prohibits the arrest of members of Congress except when they are caught committing a crime for which bail is unavailable. In such cases, the relevant legislative chamber must review the detention. Brandão said the application of these protections to pretrial detention remains legally contested.

Bolsonaro also holds an Italian passport, according to Brandão, who noted that Brazilian authorities can order the surrender of foreign travel documents but cannot revoke them, since they are issued by another country. De Moraes’ order included any foreign passports the senator might hold, media reported.

Rodrigo Stumpf González, a political science professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, said a confirmed attempt to flee could jeopardize Bolsonaro’s political future.

“Given his electoral performance, he would have been the natural leader of the opposition. But if he leaves the country, he will not only destroy his political career but also damage the family’s reputation, hurting his brothers and stepmother, who were elected to Congress,” González said.

González said Bolsonaro’s most loyal supporters would likely interpret his departure as evidence of political persecution, even though he currently faces criminal investigations rather than formal charges. He noted that Bolsonaro’s party has already begun distancing itself from that narrative by recognizing the election results.

“In Brazil, fleeing is generally seen as an admission of guilt. Lula accepted imprisonment knowing that the alternative would be the end of his political career,” González said. “Unlike during the dictatorship, the idea that fleeing is a way to escape a threat is no longer accepted today. Despite scandals involving some judges, the judiciary still enjoys a reasonable degree of public trust.”

Bolsonaro’s brother Eduardo Bolsonaro moved to the United States in March 2025, initially saying he feared having his passport seized. He subsequently lost his seat in Brazil’s lower house for missing congressional sessions and was sentenced to four years and two months in prison for attempting to interfere with judicial proceedings against his father. Earlier this month, Moraes issued an arrest warrant and ordered Eduardo Bolsonaro’s passports canceled.

Their father also explored the possibility of seeking asylum abroad. In August 2025, Federal Police investigators found a draft request for political asylum in Argentina addressed to President Javier Milei on his phone. Jair Bolsonaro spent two nights at the Hungarian Embassy in Brasília in February 2024, shortly after authorities seized his passport. De Moraes later concluded there was insufficient evidence that the embassy visit constituted an attempt to flee.

Bolsonaro and Milei, Argentina’s far-right president, kept a close alliance over the last months. Milei supported Bolsonaro during his campaign, and even wielded his trademark chainsaw during the Liberal Party convention in São Paulo.

Meanwhile, Milei has called Lula, Brazil’s president, a “convict,” and “totalitarian.” Recently, his statements led the Lula administration to downgrade ties with Argentina, one of its most influential neighbors and trade partners.

Milei’s government did not issue any statement following Lula’s win Sunday, making Argentina the only country in Latin America that failed to acknowledge the victory. “President Milei is no hypocrite,” said Ravier, the spokesman, at a news conference Tuesday. “The ideological distance between the two leaders is real.”

Flávio Bolsonaro was the clear favorite of Brazil’s conservative movement going into the 2026 presidential election.Then, unfortunately, much like election results we’ve been witnessing across America, the final weeks of the “counting” changed the outcome.

Flávio is the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, a close ally of Donald Trump who governed Brazil from 2019 to 2022 on a platform of tough-on-crime policies, free markets, and traditional values. After Jair was barred from running again and later convicted in connection with efforts to overturn his 2022 loss, he handpicked Flávio to carry the family name and the right-wing base forward.

Flávio, a longtime senator from Rio de Janeiro, has spent his career focused on public security and has worked closely with his father in Congress. Other family members have also built political careers: his brother Eduardo became a prominent Trump ally in the United States and faced legal trouble at home for lobbying American officials against Brazilian courts, while his brother Carlos and stepmother Michelle have held or sought elected office. The Bolsonaro name remains the dominant force on Brazil’s right.

After the first round, Flávio was well ahead of his Socialist opponent, President Lula da Silva, and citizens celebrated in the streets.

By the time the runoff ended on October 25, 2026, President Lula da Silva was curiously ahead by about 4.4 million votes. In those final three weeks, turnout jumped in the regions that most strongly support Lula, especially the Northeast. The government expanded cash payments to low-income families and issued an emergency order limiting online betting. On election day, voting hours were extended until 7 p.m. after a request from Lula’s side. Flávio’s campaign called it a last-minute change to the rules. Independent reviews of that extra window found that tens of thousands of ballots were cast then. The numbers shifted just enough, and in just the right places, to flip the result.

The Brazil election looks a lot like what happened in the United States in November 2020.

The nation’s enthusiasm was clearly on Bolsonaro’s side, as it was in 2020 for President Trump, who drew massive crowds in every state before the election, while the failing Joe Biden was kept hidden in his basement, far from any media scrutiny.

In the final weeks, officials made late changes to the rules. Turnout suddenly jumped in the areas that strongly support Lula. And last-minute decisions helped one side. Even so, Flávio Bolsonaro received more votes than his father did in 2022, and his party gained more seats in Congress. The right did not get weaker. It was passed in the final stretch by a mix of extra government spending, higher turnout in left-leaning regions, and an extended voting window whose timing and impact are still being questioned.

Flávio is not accepting the result.

Flávio is reportedly headed to Florida with his family after his Socialist opponent canceled his passport. Although it has not yet been confirmed, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is being credited with helping him gain asylum in the United States.

What followed the election has been more telling than the vote tally itself. Flávio refused to concede, as did his party, and said he would organize the opposition to resist the “chaos.” Multiple reports, including confirmation from a U.S. official cited by Reuters and earlier statements from Levy, indicate he left Brazil with his family and is headed to the United States. Brazilian authorities under Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes canceled his passports after he failed to surrender them. The move has been described as a protective operation. For Trump’s team, a high-profile Brazilian opposition figure operating from American soil changes the calculus.

NEW YORK, Oct 27 (Reuters) -The US Federal Election Commission's website has been targeted by a hacker or hackers, according to an email seen by ​Reuters, disrupting the agency's electronic filings system a week before the November 3 elections.

The cyberattack comes as so-called super ‌PACs and dark money groups spend record sums in the final days of the races. The elections will determine whether President Donald Trump's Republicans maintain their majorities in Congress for the next two years.

In a statement, the FEC said, "at this time, the FEC’s electronic filing system is currently offline and our IT ​staff are actively working to restore service." The FEC, which tracks the spending of candidates and political committees, said users could ​still search the website for past reports. It declined further comment on the outage.

The FEC does not ⁠play a role in administering US elections and the outage should have no effect on voters' ability to cast ballots.

The outage prevents ​organizations from filing the FEC's 24-hour and 48-hour spending reports, which show how much political groups and others are spending on specific races.

"I've never ​seen this in 26 years," said Steven Mele, president and CEO at political finance compliance firm MBA Consulting Group. "The result is there will be less disclosure on the elections" until it's fixed.

A status message, opens new tab posted by the FEC said its filing system had been down since around 10 p.m. ET on Monday (0200 GMT ​Tuesday). The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency referred questions to the FEC. The FBI did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

The FEC posted ​the notice after campaign finance officers couldn't file mandatory reports late on Monday.

"We have a bad actor attempting to breach FEC systems. As a result, ‌we’ve had ⁠to temporarily shut down our web facing services," an FEC electronic filings officer said in the email to several campaign compliance firms that night.

The midterms are now the most expensive US election in history with roughly $11.21 billion spent on advertising and future reservations so far, according to political ad tracker AdImpact. It's surpassed the previous record set in the 2024 elections when $11.2 billion was spent on all races, including $3.2 ​billion on the presidential race between ​Trump and former Vice President ⁠Kamala Harris, AdImpact said.

Much of the spending is being driven by super PACs, which can accept unlimited amounts of money from wealthy individuals and corporations, opens new tab and spend as much as they want on campaigns with few ​restrictions.

The sums being spent in recent weeks are staggering as Democrats gain ground in several Republican ​strongholds.

Super PACs and ⁠dark money groups have spent an average of over $50 million per day over the last week, said Brendan Glavin, research director at nonpartisan campaign watchdog group OpenSecrets. More than $250 million in spending was reported on October 20 alone, he added.

"It's a big deal," he said of the outage, which ⁠leaves voters ​in the dark until the filing system is back online.

"These are the key ​reports that tell us what is happening," Glavin said. "In the last days of the election this is the only way for us to keep track of where the money's ​being spent" and who's spending it.

A grand jury declined to indict January 6 star witness Cassidy Hutchinson, the Washington Post reported.

The Justice Department sought to indict January 6 ‘star witness’ Cassidy Hutchinson for lying to Congress.

Earlier this year it was reported that the DOJ launched an investigation into Hutchinson.

The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division presented evidence to a federal grand jury last week. Hutchinson has not been subpoenaed yet.

Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon is spearheading the investigation.

Cassidy Hutchinson testified in June 2022 that Trump got into “the beast” after his speech at the Ellipse on January 6 with the belief that he would be driven to the Capitol.

According to Hutchinson, who received this information from Tony Ornato, the Assistant Director for the Secret Service, Trump grew angry after he was informed that he was being driven back to the West Wing.

According to Ornato, Trump shouted, “I’m the f*cking president! Take me up to the Capitol now!”

Hutchinson alleged that at this point, Trump reached up to the driver, grabbed the steering wheel, and tried to commandeer the presidential limo.

Hutchinson then claimed Secret Service Agent Bobby Engel grabbed Trump’s arm and took his hand off the steering wheel.

Of course, this was all a lie.

The House oversight subcommittee, headed by Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), later found that unreleased testimony by four White House employees present for Trump’s Jan. 6, 2021, speech at the Ellipse “directly contradicted claims made by Cassidy Hutchinson. She made it all up. The woman should be hauled into court!

Later reports found that Liz Cheney coached Cassidy Hutchinson before her testimony. Another crime.

Kevin Bleyer, a writer who worked on “The Daily Show” and won four Primetime Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award and a Writers Guild Award, died Sunday in a car accident in Millrift, Pennsylvania. He was 54.

His family said the accident occurred on a rural road where he had a country home.

He spent nine years on “The Daily Show” and an additional eight years as a writer for “Politically Incorrect” with Bill Maher and Dennis Miller.

His other writing credits included Disney+’s “The Right Stuff,” Fox’s “Sleepy Hollow” and Bravo’s “Significant Others.”

While living in Kyrgyzstan in 2013, Bleyer executive produced Studio 7, the first political satire news show in Central Asia. When he returned, he co-founded Pilot Media Initiatives, which sponsors civics-minded media programs in democratically challenged countries. He produced and helped launch political satire shows in North Macedonia, Nigeria, Moldova, Kenya, Jordan, and Estonia.

He also served as a writer and producer for NBC News’ “Today Show” and a supervising producer for MSNBC’s “Ronan Farrow Daily.”

His books included “Me the People: One Man’s Selfless Quest to Rewrite the Constitution of the United States of America” and co-authoring bestseller “Earth: The Book.” He also co-authored “How to Sweet-Talk a Shark” with Bill Richardson.

Bleyer was the voice of the Onion Radio News, had a weekly column in the Daily Beast and wrote columns for Foreign Policy. He contributed as a speechwriter to President Barack Obamas addresses, including at the White House Correspondents Dinners. He also served as deputy chief speechwriter for New York Mayor Bill de Blasio. He was an adjunct professor at NYU’s Tisch School in 2018, and worked at PRI’s “Marketplace” in London for a year.

Before his death, he was developing a pilot about New York City politics for Appian Way and HBO.

Born in Bethesda, Maryland, Bleyer was raised in Seattle and had lived in New York City for the past 20 years. He started out as a child actor, appearing in commercials for Aim toothpast and in the film “Twice in a Lifetime” before graduating Stanford U. He started his career as dramaturg and assistant to Anna Deavere Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Nella Vera; his father Dtr. Archie Bleyer; and his brother Keith Bleyer, sister-in-law Kelly Schulz-Bleyer, nephew Evan Bleyer and niece Lauren Bleyer.

I was lucky enough to know the humor, curiosity, mischief, and tenderness behind those word — and to be loved by a man who made my own world more joyful, more adventurous, and infinitely more beautiful,” said his wife, Nella Vera.

“I had the privilege of counting Kevin Bleyer as both a friend and a work partner. Whether developing a series pitch or sitting around sharing stories, Kevin brought the wit, the funny, the satire. But underneath that rare talent lived a man with depth, love and a sincere desire to leave the world a better place than he found it. Whether working with the US State Department in Central Asia to bring political satire programming to that part of the world or delivering biting and poignant takes on ‘The Daily Show’ and many other programs, Kevin did just that. He left the world a better place than he found it,” said producer Llewellyn Wells.

North Carolina Libertarian Senate Candidate Arrested After Live-Blogging Armed Standoff With Police

Jonathan D. Miller, the Libertarian Party's nominee for a North Carolina state Senate seat covering much of Cary, was arrested at about 3 p.m. Monday after an hours-long standoff with police that ended in the woods behind his apartment, according to WRAL. No shots were fired, and no one was reported hurt.

Cary police say it began with calls from people worried about social media posts in which Miller threatened to harm himself. Officers could not reach him earlier in the morning, then an officer encountered him on another welfare check. WRAL puts the visit to his home on Glen Echo Lane at about 8:26 a.m. Police Chief Terry Sult told reporters: "At that point, he had a firearm. He was ordered not to touch it. He got it and then he took off running."

Miller gave a different account in several calls to WRAL from the woods. He said he was outside smoking when an officer saw a holstered revolver on his hip and drew his own weapon. "I told him I was going to refuse that order, and I backed away slowly until I was far enough away from him to turn and run, and then I turned and ran into the woods," he told the station.

He kept posting on X as the standoff went on, describing his efforts to evade police and his talks with a negotiator. "I've got six shots and the high ground. I hope they don't find me, but if they do it's going to be a hell of a show," he wrote in one post, according to BNO. WRAL reports that his posts from Sunday night onward also described suicidal feelings. Libertarian presidential nominee Chase Oliver was among those who urged him not to take his own life or fight police.

Sult said police monitored the posts while negotiators, the Wake Regional SWAT team and tactical medics worked the scene. Glen Echo Lane and Audubon Parc Drive were closed, and nearby Resurrection Lutheran School, a private school, was under a code yellow lockdown for part of the day. Miller told WRAL he was hiding because he did not want to be taken into custody and confined to a hospital, and that he hoped police would give up so he could leave Cary.

The chief thanked WRAL for taking the calls, saying police listened in with the station's permission and gave guidance to the person talking with Miller. He described Miller as "in a dark place," WRAL reports.

Miller was charged with communicating threats, resisting officers and going armed to the terror of the people, and is held at the Wake County Detention Center. Sult said police have also obtained warrants for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He said Miller still had a weapon when he was arrested but could not say what type. These are allegations; neither outlet reports a bond or a court date.

AIPAC-Aligned Groups Gift Doris Matsui a $785k Blitz of Last-Minute Attack Ads

The ads attack Mai Vang, a progressive challenging the 11-term Democratic incumbent in California’s 7th district.

AIPAC and aligned groups are funding a surge in last-minute spending behind incumbent California Rep. Doris Matsui in an attempt to save the 82-year-old Democrat from being unseated by her progressive challenger Mai Vang.

AIPAC itself is funneling the money through Pro-Choice Majority Action. Pro-Choice Majority Action does not publicly associate with AIPAC, but it is legally affiliated directly with EDW Action, which has been established by Drop Site and others as a known AIPAC passthrough PAC. EDW Action has used Pro-Choice Majority in elections across the country, including the hotly contested primary to succeed Nancy Pelosi in San Francisco and against Melat Kiros before her landmark victory against 30-year incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette in Denver.

The Pro-Choice Majority ad against Mai Vang says the Sacramento city councilwoman is “all for herself” and accuses her of missing 40% of regional transit board meetings, saying, “When she showed up, she slashed public funds for affordable housing and homelessness”—a confusing accusation given Vang’s record. The Sacramento Regional Transit Board itself formally commended Vang in January 2025. Vang has also voted to redirect city resources allocated for the police department to its homelessness response efforts, and she has proposed both a $200 billion national affordable housing trust fund and expansion of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit, which incentivizes private investors to subsidize the construction of affordable housing across the country.

The practice of using passthroughs to obscure its support has become common as AIPAC grapples with how toxic its pro-Israel bribery has turned with voters. This week, AIPAC announced it was ending endorsements and direct contributions to candidates after the midterms, opting to use its super PAC United Democracy Project and obfuscating passthrough PACs instead.

Pro-Choice Majority reserved $300,000 of negative ads against Vang on October 5, comprising roughly 40% of the total $785,000 being spent on Matsui’s behalf in the home stretch.

The remaining $485,000 is coming from Affordable California, which lists a Dallas address and one donor. The American Foundation for Good Government dumped $500,000 into it on October 7. The PAC reserved its ads against Vang that same day. The American Foundation for Good Government, established in March, is a 501(c)(4), which means its donors do not need to be disclosed. Notably, it spent in Michigan this cycle, helping to bankroll Michigan Forward 2026, which in turn donated to A Stronger Michigan. Both organizations were key spenders among a network of AIPAC-aligned PACs that bled more than $17 million attacking Abdul El-Sayed and boosting Haley Stevens in the state’s Democratic Senate primary.

Matsui’s position on Israel and Gaza has evolved to some extent since AIPAC included her on its list of endorsees in 2024. The congresswoman has begun referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “war criminal” and said she opposes sending “offensive dollars” to Israel. Matsui has not signed on as a co-sponsor to the Block the Bombs Act, the most basic legislative vehicle to restricting the transfer of these “offensive dollars,” a distinction without any functional meaning given that money is fungible, to Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. She declines to call Israel’s actions a “genocide” and backs a two-state solution.

Aside from the large sum of money Matsui’s campaign has received from AIPAC-aligned special interest groups, the congresswoman has also loaned herself a total of $6.9 million, most recently in installments of $2.59 million and $1.52 million on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

Vang defeated Matsui in the June primary election by a margin of 31.2% to 29.2%, but because California has a “jungle primary” the top two vote receivers advance to the general election irrespective of party affiliation. Zacharia Wooden, the Republican candidate in the primary who came in third place, received 45,994 votes. The only available public polling in the race, conducted by Data for Progress in mid-August, shows Vang widening her lead from 2 points to 4, boasting a 32% to 28% lead with 40% of voters either undecided or planning to sit out.

60 Christians Murdered in Ethiopia Amid Years of Targeted Attacks

At least 60 Orthodox Christians were killed in two attacks in central Ethiopia’s Oromia region over the past week, according to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. The church reported that 14 people were killed in Merti district on October 20 and another 46 in Shirka district on October 24. More than 20 people were seriously injured, and 20 homes were burned down.

Witnesses told Vatican News that attackers in Shirka went house to house, killing residents with guns and knives. The dead included children and elderly people. One church was damaged, while churches in neighboring villages sheltered survivors.

Both districts are in the Muslim-majority Arsi area. Ethiopia’s 2007 census put Arsi Zone’s population at about 58 percent Muslim, 40 percent Orthodox Christian, and 1.4 percent Protestant. Merti district was about 61 percent Muslim and 38 percent Orthodox. Nationally, figures cited by Religion News Service in 2021 put Christians at about 64 percent of Ethiopia’s population, including roughly 40 percent who were Orthodox.

Ethnically, Arsi Zone was about 83 percent Oromo and 15 percent Amhara in the census. Earlier victims included members of the predominantly Orthodox Christian Amhara community, according to the ECLJ, the European Centre for Law and Justice.

According to diocesan reports submitted to the Holy Synod, those killed in October came from rural farming communities. At its October 26 assembly in Addis Ababa, the Synod condemned the killings as a “reprehensible, inhumane deed” and urged authorities to prosecute the attackers and deploy security forces to protect vulnerable communities. It also said it would seek talks with senior government officials.

The bishops described the massacres as part of an escalating pattern of targeted violence against Orthodox Christians in Arsi and elsewhere in Ethiopia.

The Oromia regional government blamed the attacks on the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), an ethnic-nationalist insurgent group seeking greater autonomy and recognition of Oromo identity. Formerly the armed wing of the Oromo Liberation Front, the OLA split from the political party in 2018 after refusing to disarm and has fought the government since then. Ethiopia’s parliament designated the group a terrorist organization in May 2021 under the name “Shene.”

Clinton Judge Issues Warning to DOJ During Hearing on Effort to Force California to Remove 20,000 Ballots Mailed to Non-Citizens

The federal judge overseeing the DOJ’s case against California and the effort to force the state to remove 20,000 ballots given to non-citizens, issued DOJ attorneys a warning on Tuesday during a hearing.

The Justice Department recently sued California and Los Angeles County over 20,000 suspected non-citizens registered to vote who have already been mailed ballots.

On Monday, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed the Justice Department’s emergency appeal to remove 20,000 ballots given to non-citizens in California.

A three-judge panel ruled 2-1 that they lacked jurisdiction over the appeal because the lower court did not have adequate opportunity to consider the DOJ’s application for a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO).

The three judges included: Majority: Mark Bennett (Trump) Gabriel Sanchez (Biden) – Dissent: Patrick Bumatay (Trump).

On Monday, the Ninth Circuit Court denied the government’s appeal because the DOJ improperly skipped over the district court judge so the DOJ was forced to attend a hearing on Tuesday with Judge David Carter.

On Tuesday evening, US District Judge David Carter, a Clinton appointee, warned First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli and told that it would be wise that “any threats” to California elected employees “cease immediately.”

Bill Essayli previously threatened California elections officials with legal consequences if they unlawfully tabulated ballots.

“Under 18 U.S.C. §§ 611 and 2, officials who knowingly tabulate unlawful ballots risk aiding and abetting a federal offense. The Justice Department urges the County and the Secretary of State to temporarily segregate the flagged ballots pending citizenship verification or face legal consequences,” Bill Essayli said.

The elite KSK unit was previously embroiled in far-right extremism controversies that led to the disbandment of one of its companies in 2020

Germany’s elite special forces are preparing for a potential large-scale war with Russia, the unit’s commander has told Bild. The remarks come amid ongoing tensions between Moscow and NATO over the Ukraine conflict, with German officials warning that the country’s military must be ready for a possible confrontation by the end of the decade.

The highly secretive unit, known as Kommando Spezialkrafte (KSK), is comparable to Britain’s SAS or the US Green Berets. According to a report from its base in southwestern Germany published on Monday, the commandos are adjusting their training to counter Russian forces equipped with tanks, artillery, drones and electronic warfare capabilities, including in extreme cold.

“We are orienting ourselves very specifically toward the adversary Russia,” KSK Commander Brigadier General Andreas Kuhne said, adding that his soldiers would have to be prepared to “remain in the field much longer,” potentially “with no end in sight,” if war broke out.

Kuhne also said the unit was preparing to carry out missions before conventional German forces entered combat. “When the 45th Armored Brigade in Lithuania starts its engines in a real emergency, we want to have already completed our job,” he told Bild.

According to the newspaper, only about a third of the KSK’s roughly 1,500 personnel are commandos, while the rest serve in administrative and support roles.

The unit has been rocked by a series of far-right extremism scandals in recent years. In 2017, prosecutors launched an investigation following reports that soldiers had performed Nazi salutes, listened to far-right music and offered a woman as a “prize” at a farewell party for an outgoing company commander.

In 2018, investigations exposed an underground far-right network involving German military and security personnel, some of whom allegedly discussed plans to kill political opponents in the event of a breakdown of public order.

In 2020, police discovered a large cache of weapons, ammunition, explosives and Nazi memorabilia at the property of a KSK sergeant major. Some of the ammunition was suspected of having been stolen from Bundeswehr stocks.

The scandals prompted then-Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer to disband one of the KSK’s four commando companies, the 2nd Company, and introduce sweeping reforms. The special forces command itself remained operational.

Speaking to Bild, Kuhne acknowledged that disciplinary and conduct-related incidents within the unit had become “extremely rare,” but had not disappeared entirely. He insisted that misconduct would no longer be tolerated or covered up.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz has vowed to transform the Bundeswehr into Europe’s strongest conventional military force in response to what he describes as threats from Russia. His government has prioritized defense spending and military assistance to Ukraine despite acknowledging that the German economy is in a “structural crisis.”

In July, The Telegraph and Die Welt reported that Berlin was preparing a secret plan to override potential resistance from regional governments to the deployment of NATO troops toward Russia’s borders.

Merz’s military ambitions come amid declining public support for his government. According to an INSA poll published by Bild this week, the chancellor ranked last among 20 prominent German politicians. The surging opposition Alternative for Germany (AfD) won state elections in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in September, while the socialist Left Party (Die Linke) emerged as the largest party in Berlin’s election.

Russia has repeatedly denied having plans to attack NATO countries. In August, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed reports alleging that Moscow intended to attack alliance members as “scare stories” that had “nothing to do with reality” or Russia’s intentions.

Bill Essayli, a former GOP lawmaker and ally of president, has not been confirmed by the Senate in his role

A US judge ruled on Tuesday that Bill Essayli, the top federal prosecutor in southern California,was “unlawfully serving” as the head of the US attorney’s office and was disqualified from overseeing two criminal prosecutions.

The order, however, will not immediately go into effect, and the Department of Justice (DoJ) has said it intends to appeal.

The ruling was part of a long-running legal battle challenging the Trump administration’s maneuvers to keep Essayli in office despite not being confirmed by the US Senate. Essayli, a former Republican state lawmaker and ally of Donald Trump, became an interim US attorney in April 2025, but he was not formally nominated by the president, which allowed him to lead the office without going through the standard confirmation process.

After Essayli’s “interim” appointment ended last July, the Trump administration gave him an “acting” title, then kept him on as a “first assistant” after a judge ruled he was unlawfully serving as US attorney. But in August, a federal appellate court ruled against a Nevada justice department leader in a similar case, and the judge overseeing Essayli’s case cited that higher court’s ruling on Tuesday, issuing another order saying he was still acting unlawfully.

Michael Seabright, the federal judge, said Essayli was illegally serving, even with a “special attorney” and “first assistant” designation by the Trump administration, and the judge said he could no longer participate in or supervise two ongoing prosecutions where the attorneys had challenged his position.

“We respectfully disagree with the court’s order,” Essayli said in a statement on Tuesday.“The President and the Attorney General have every right to select supervisors within the Justice Department.

“Ultimately, this question will be decided by the Supreme Court, and I look forward to serving in my current role until then,”he continued.

Alina Habba, Trump’s former personal lawyer, was similarly disqualified from the top prosecutor job in New Jersey in December, though she stayed on as a senior adviser at the justice department.

A New Jersey man accused of sending a text threatening to hijack a United Airlines flight over the weekend told investigators he had been drinking and described the message as poorly worded banter with a coworker, according to an arrest report.

Dante Milne, 25, allegedly sent the threatening message Saturday while aboard United Airlines Flight 1681, a Boeing 737 carrying 150 passengers and six crew members from Las Vegas to Newark, New Jersey.

"I’m gonna hijack this b and crash ur row only," Milne allegedly wrote, according to an arrest report cited by FOX5 Vegas.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz told Cuba's foreign minister to "back up" Tuesday after the Cuban diplomat approached the podium and interrupted his remarks on the floor of the U.N. General Assembly.

"Well, we know. We know where it went. And today we are here to share it to the world," Waltz said as he accused Cuba's government of enriching its leaders while its people suffered.

As the Cuban delegation sought to interrupt his remarks, Waltz fired back.

"I know you don't like to hear this," Waltz said. "This is America, my friend. This is the United Nations. This isn't your communist dictatorship. You cannot silence me."

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla continued toward the podium as the president of the General Assembly attempted to restore order, reminding delegates that they would have an opportunity to respond.

"This individual needs to back away from this podium," Waltz said as the confrontation escalated. "He's not going to intimidate me in the United States of America.

'"I'm the representative of the United States of America. Back up! Back up, Ambassador. Back away! This isn't Havana."

Ninth Circuit Declines DOJ’s Emergency Request

On Monday, the Ninth Circuit ruled against the DOJ in its emergency request to have California set aside all ballots from individuals on the list of 22,000 illegal voters provided by the DOJ.

Today there was a hearing from the original case regarding the request to set aside these ballots.

HOWELL, Mich. — Vice President JD Vance ripped Democratic Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed as a “psychopath” during a trip to Michigan Tuesday —claiming that the lefty candidate was “ashamed” of the state, is pushing “anti-white racial hatred” and will likely kill off the local auto industry.

Vance used his high-profile visit to make a last-ditch pitch to swing voters that El-Sayed was an unacceptable radical — as polls show him virtually tied with or leading Republican Mike Rogers one week from Election Day.

“Abdul El-Sayed is a little bit of a psychopath, and we’re going to just try to make the argument as well as we can and help Mike out a little bit,” Vance said before boarding Air Force Two en route to a rally attended by several hundred people outside Detroit.

El-Sayed has “engaged in the kind of explicitly anti-white racial hatred” perhaps “more than any Democrat running in the nation,” the veep boomed, calling the candidate “a guy who seems to love to traffic in racial hatred.”

Vance did not provide details on his allegation that El-Sayed was racist, but Republicans have taken aim at the candidate’s support for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies, including for healthcare, government contracting and aid for minority-run businesses.

When he arrived in Michigan, Vance told a cheering crowd that El-Sayed was an extremist.

If recent rioting in France spread to Detroit, El-Sayed would be “right there and cheering them on,” he said.

“Abdul El-Sayed was born just north of Detroit in a town called Rochester Hills.

Yet he is claiming to be, and I quote, ‘an immigrant from North Africa.’ For decades, he’s gone even further than that. He told people he is an Egyptian citizen,” the VP said.

“Why? Why would you tell people that you were not from the community that you’re actually from?It’s an insane claim to make… [He is] a man who would lie, who is so ashamed of this state that he would lie about being an immigrant from another continent.”

Vance added that El-Sayed “says that he wants to pass the green new scam and kill the auto industry of this state” and has “campaigned with his best friend Hassan Piker, a man who said that we deserved 9/11.”

The broadsides come as El-Sayed leads Rogers by 2.5 percentage points, according to the RealClearPolitics average of recent polls.

Vance brushed off former Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s vehement opposition to Rogers, a hawkish former chairman of the House intelligence committee, calling the Republican “fundamentally a decent guy and the kind of public servant that you want in Washington, D.C.”

He also stopped short of embracing President Trump’s characterization of El-Sayed, who is Muslim, as a “jihadist,” saying instead, “I don’t know what’s in the guy’s heart. I just know he has a lot of weird friends.”

El-Sayed’s campaign did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

A Venezuelan illegal immigrant shot and killed by an off-duty FBI agent in Chicago Monday night had previously been caught and released at the southern border during the Biden administration, multiple federal law enforcement sources told Fox News.

The man, identified by federal sources as 27-year-old Oscar D. Corrales, was firing a gun toward people in a homeless encampment when the off-duty FBI agent encountered him, according to the sources.

The agent was driving alone when he spotted Corrales shooting toward the encampment, sources said. The agent got out of his car and shot and killed Corrales.

Corrales also had a previous arrest in California, where he was released from custody despite an ICE detainer, according to the sources.

The circumstances of that arrest, including the charges Corrales faced and which California jurisdiction released him, were not immediately available.

Sources emphasized that the deadly encounter in Chicago was not connected to an immigration enforcement operation. The FBI agent was off duty when he encountered Corrales, and the shooting was described as an unrelated incident.

An off-duty FBI agent in Chicago shot and killed Oscar Corrales, 27, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela who was firing a gun toward a homeless encampment.

Chicago Police Department: Federal law enforcement sources told Fox News Corrales was apprehended at the southern border in October 2023 and subsequently released into the United States during the Biden administration.

The Chicago Police Department confirmed to Fox News Digital that officers responded to a shooting involving federal agents in the 1700 block of South Union Avenue. The department said its Investigative Response Team was on site to document the incident and referred additional questions to the FBI’s Chicago field office.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office provided Fox News Digital with a record identifying Corrales as a 27-year-old man under case number 5735.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the FBI’s Chicago field office for additional information about the shooting and the circumstances surrounding the agent’s involvement.
