Maybe if 90% of the movie hadn’t been in the dark / in the rain and viewers could actually see WTF is going on, it might have had more success? Even when they’re in Antartica with white snow and ice all around, the scene is filmed in the dark and you can’t see shit. I’ll also add that the flick was ridiculously LOUD and blew my fucking ears out.
The reason the movie is a failure is purely technical, the story doesn’t matter as everybody is there to see the cool CGI special effects of giant monsters fighting each other and smashing puny human cities and the flick simply didn’t deliver.

No, it’s never better. Setting the CGI scenes in the dark/rain is purely a cost-cutting measure employed by the studio and while I could see this practice being used in a conventional movie that has only one or two minor CGI scenes, something like the Godzilla and Pacific Rim flicks are all about the CGI effects.
Regardless of what you think of the story for Kong Skull Island, most off the CGI scenes were done in daylight and the viewer could actually see WTF was going on.
