Surprised there's no Criterion thread yet.

I'm interested to see some of the Fassbinder blurays coming out. I've also got John Ford's My Darling Clementine ready to watch whenever I have time. And I'm happy to see my favorite Todd Haynes movie getting an HD upgrade in the near future.

The last Criterion I saw was the Ray Milland supernatural mystery The Uninvited. As I expected, it was good but not great. It rates about the same as Ministry of Fear, another decent Milland Criterion.

Getting back to one of the films mentioned in OP, I thought Ford's My Darling Clementine was uneven. The technical aspects, especially the noirish lighting, were stunning throughout. But the meandering screenplay builds no tension until over an hour has passed; it's understandable why Zanuck wanted cuts for the theatrical release.
Victor Mature is out of place in a non-spaghetti Western. He's like Stallone in a Stetson.
Clementine is quite a qt but she barely has screen time. It's not her story yet they named it after her, in lieu of a more evocative, exciting title.

Criterion is great, without them we wouldn't have insanely good transfers of many great films… But damn are typical Criterion collectors the worst kind of tryhards. Just like… midwestern nerds that want to feel cultured. It's so easy to be a cinephile now as long as you blindly buy everything Criterion puts out and give the most basic analysis that tends to go completely against what the filmmaker is about or going for. I doubt there is a bigger difference between artist and consumer in any other medium really.

The other day I went on /r/criterion and I found a thread. Apparently they've started a "recommendation committee" that, once a month, vote on a film that will be pitched (or I should say spammed) to Criterion for their consideration in a letter/form. Think rare, obscure, OOP and poorly transferred stuff. Films that, for the first time in possibly decades, will look as it was intended, not some god-forsaken 4:3 aspect ratio fifth generation VHS rip recorded on TV in the 90s. Guess what film they picked?

Synechdoche, NY

But hey, they seem to be doing pretty well business-wise. Basically the idea seems to be, watch these films, and you will know cinema. But there is *so* much more out there, and not all of the Criterion shit has to be good.

But yeah, overall, I'm glad they exist. Their restoration and transfer work is good enough that I can overlook the lames that buy the films, and perhaps everything I've mentioned is part of a bigger problem in cinephilia (or just straight concentrated plebetry)

> A wildly ambitious film from the mind of Charlie Kaufman, whose first turn as a director highlights his ability to tell a multi-layered story about human emotion, interaction and overall fascination. If characters alone could merit Criterion releases, Philip Seymour Hoffman's Caden Cotard is a worthy combatant. While the films original blu release offered a good enough transfer and decent supplements, there is more that can be done with this film. It was named Roger Ebert's #1 film of the 00's and still, it is a criminally under-seen film that would benefit from a criterion release.

Ouch. The thinking seems to be "I want an expensive version of my favorite film." I'm a little puzzled by the idea that a Criterion release gives a film wider exposure than a Sony Pictures bluray on Amazon for ten bucks.

At least their 4th place suggestion was somewhat rare

Arty, aesthetically beautiful, and strangely universal in its message; Whether you're a devout Christian or a militant atheist, you can find something to adore in the allegory the film presents and the symbolism laced all the way through. I heard Craig Keller of Masters of Cinema talk about the WCF and related bureaucratic hurdles they encounter when trying to get film distribution from these smaller countries. Some film restorations are only licensed for showing at a cinema, some countries only have one or two people working in the particular film archive, some rights holders go missing for a while (as an Egyptian did after the Arab Spring)…
It sounds like WCF releases are often more challenging than putting out the average French or Italian film.

Eclipse Series 43: Agnès Varda in California

> The legendary French filmmaker Agnès Varda, whose remarkable career began in the 1950s and has continued into the twenty-first century, produced some of her most provocative works while living on the West Coast of the United States. After temporarily relocating from France to California in the late sixties with her husband, Jacques Demy, so that he could make his first Hollywood film, Varda became entranced by the politics, youth culture, and sunshine of the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas, and created documentary explorations and fictional narratives—sometimes within the same film. She returned a decade later, and made more fascinating portraits of outsiderness. Her five revealing, entertaining California films, encompassing shorts and features, are collected in this set, which demonstrates that Varda was as deft an artist in unfamiliar terrain as she was on her own turf.

I never have too high expectations for criterion.

Glad to see more Kieślowski and Breaker Point is great film.

They really don't need more James Ivory or Wes Anderson. I hate their trend of finding some whatever director still alive and constantly giving them spotlight.

Seijun's Youth of the Beast (1963) is a much better film than Tokyo Drifter. And it actually stays mostly coherent.

My only problem with Criterion is they focus too much on that artsy fartsy borefest cinema. And they've all but ignored classic HK cinema, probably because it's not pretentious enough. Oh, and 2 of my favourite films are of course amongst the few that are OOP.

Other companies like Arrow are also starting to beat them at their own game, using better compression techniques.

Could you name them? One of mine is Le trou.

And which HK films do you like? That's one area I have only seen a small number. Hard Boiled was disappointing to me (and the Criterion DVD was pretty crappy from what I remember).

Le Circle Rouge & Chungking Express. At least with Le Circle Rouge there's the StudioCanal release though. I'm not paying $100+ for the Criterion versions.

Hard Boiled & The Killer are the most well-known films Internationally I guess. It's a shame that the best release they've had is a DVD upscale that's been DNR'd to hell, but that's the same sad story for most of HK cinema. Golden Harvest (one of the big film studios in the 70s-90s) sold all their rights to Fortune Star that just release all their Blu-Rays as half-assed upscales. And it seems like every studio other than Shaw Bros. all left their film stock to rot in a leaky cupboard. I mean, I could name some amazing films that have never even been given a half-decent DVD release.

HK cinema would definitely need its own thread, but I can give you a few recommendations. It essentially boils down to two types of films: Martial Arts & Heroic Bloodshed (Triads vs. cops, violent action drama). I don't know if Kung Fu films interest you but i'll make some recommendations for the second genre:

Long Arm of the Law (1984)

City on Fire (1987)

The Big Heat (1988)

Full Contact (1992)

Ebola Syndrome (1996 - doesn't belong in this genre but it's classic HK)

Once Upon a Time in Triad Society (1996)

The Longest Nite (1998)

Beast Cops (1998)

The Mission (1999)

Election (2005)

Drug War (2013)

Now I know you'll never find a Jackie Chan film on Criterion, but his HK work is a great example of that brilliant fight choreography that you won't find in Hollywood. We're talking 100s of reshoots and extending filming time to make sure everything looks perfect. There are some real classics in the HK back-catalogue though that are screaming out for a restoration.

The second largest contribution in Criterion's catalogue is from France.

I don't know about the bluray, but the best Hard Boiled DVD was from HK Video. It had French subs but I saw a custom English disc on a torrent site.

I think the Criterion DVD was one of their worst releases quality-wise. Poor image and sub translation.

I have maybe 10 of these. They're really neat to have in the collection, but I'm going to try to look for ones with better special features because I haven't found many that I'm satisfied with. I'm looking for more commentaries, too. I hope they release more of Todd Solondz in the future. I wanna hear him do a commentary on one of his films.

Does Criterion even sell movies in Canada? I looked around most of the stores that still carry movies and have never seen a single Criterion film in my life, so I mostly just buy DVDs from used bookstores and torrent chinese cartoons because they have the most seeders, not to mention that there's no way I could join a private tracker with my pathetic upload speed.

I didn't know that there existed an entire subculture of teens who spend their allowances on Criterion releases until this thread, but I now think they were trying to recruit me and my sister.
