Surprised there's no Criterion thread yet.
I'm interested to see some of the Fassbinder blurays coming out. I've also got John Ford's

Getting back to one of the films mentioned in OP, I thought Ford's My Darling Clementine was uneven. The technical aspects, especially the noirish lighting, were stunning throughout. But the meandering screenplay builds no tension until over an hour has passed; it's understandable why Zanuck wanted cuts for the theatrical release.
Victor Mature is out of place in a non-spaghetti Western. He's like Stallone in a Stetson.
Clementine is quite a qt but she barely has screen time. It's not her story yet they named it after her, in lieu of a more evocative, exciting title.

Criterion is great, without them we wouldn't have insanely good transfers of many great films… But damn are typical Criterion collectors the worst kind of tryhards. Just like… midwestern nerds that want to feel cultured. It's so easy to be a cinephile now as long as you blindly buy everything Criterion puts out and give the most basic analysis that tends to go completely against what the filmmaker is about or going for. I doubt there is a bigger difference between artist and consumer in any other medium really.
The other day I went on /r/criterion and I found a thread. Apparently they've started a "recommendation committee" that, once a month, vote on a film that will be pitched (or I should say spammed) to Criterion for their consideration in a letter/form. Think rare, obscure, OOP and poorly transferred stuff. Films that, for the first time in possibly decades, will look as it was intended, not some god-forsaken 4:3 aspect ratio fifth generation VHS rip recorded on TV in the 90s. Guess what film they picked?
Synechdoche, NY
But hey, they seem to be doing pretty well business-wise. Basically the idea seems to be, watch these films, and you will know cinema. But there is *so* much more out there, and not all of the Criterion shit has to be good.
But yeah, overall, I'm glad they exist. Their restoration and transfer work is good enough that I can overlook the lames that buy the films, and perhaps everything I've mentioned is part of a bigger problem in cinephilia (or just straight concentrated plebetry)

>>3189> A wildly ambitious film from the mind of Charlie Kaufman, whose first turn as a director highlights his ability to tell a multi-layered story about human emotion, interaction and overall fascination. If characters alone could merit Criterion releases, Philip Seymour Hoffman's Caden Cotard is a worthy combatant. While the films original blu release offered a good enough transfer and decent supplements, there is more that can be done with this film. It was named Roger Ebert's #1 film of the 00's and still, it is a criminally under-seen film that would benefit from a criterion release.Ouch. The thinking seems to be "I want an expensive version of my favorite film." I'm a little puzzled by the idea that a Criterion release gives a film wider exposure than a Sony Pictures bluray on Amazon for ten bucks.

Eclipse Series 43: Agnès Varda in California
> The legendary French filmmaker Agnès Varda, whose remarkable career began in the 1950s and has continued into the twenty-first century, produced some of her most provocative works while living on the West Coast of the United States. After temporarily relocating from France to California in the late sixties with her husband, Jacques Demy, so that he could make his first Hollywood film, Varda became entranced by the politics, youth culture, and sunshine of the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas, and created documentary explorations and fictional narratives—sometimes within the same film. She returned a decade later, and made more fascinating portraits of outsiderness. Her five revealing, entertaining California films, encompassing shorts and features, are collected in this set, which demonstrates that Varda was as deft an artist in unfamiliar terrain as she was on her own turf.

Le Circle Rouge & Chungking Express. At least with Le Circle Rouge there's the StudioCanal release though. I'm not paying $100+ for the Criterion versions.
Hard Boiled & The Killer are the most well-known films Internationally I guess. It's a shame that the best release they've had is a DVD upscale that's been DNR'd to hell, but that's the same sad story for most of HK cinema. Golden Harvest (one of the big film studios in the 70s-90s) sold all their rights to Fortune Star that just release all their Blu-Rays as half-assed upscales. And it seems like every studio other than Shaw Bros. all left their film stock to rot in a leaky cupboard. I mean, I could name some amazing films that have never even been given a half-decent DVD release.
HK cinema would definitely need its own thread, but I can give you a few recommendations. It essentially boils down to two types of films: Martial Arts & Heroic Bloodshed (Triads vs. cops, violent action drama). I don't know if Kung Fu films interest you but i'll make some recommendations for the second genre:
Long Arm of the Law (1984)
City on Fire (1987)
The Big Heat (1988)
Full Contact (1992)
Ebola Syndrome (1996 - doesn't belong in this genre but it's classic HK)
Once Upon a Time in Triad Society (1996)
The Longest Nite (1998)
Beast Cops (1998)
The Mission (1999)
Election (2005)
Drug War (2013)
Now I know you'll never find a Jackie Chan film on Criterion, but his HK work is a great example of that brilliant fight choreography that you won't find in Hollywood. We're talking 100s of reshoots and extending filming time to make sure everything looks perfect. There are some real classics in the HK back-catalogue though that are screaming out for a restoration.

Well I can't vouch for that at all, but Murakami is an interesting contemporary artist

He knows his feelumms.
But has he made anything good himself? I only made it halfway through Pervert's Guide to Cinema.

Probably their most pathetic month yet in a year full of pathetic months

I used to care more about their releases, but they are slipping into mediocrity
That said the Hulu+ selection is still pretty good

Does Criterion even sell movies in Canada? I looked around most of the stores that still carry movies and have never seen a single Criterion film in my life, so I mostly just buy DVDs from used bookstores and torrent chinese cartoons because they have the most seeders, not to mention that there's no way I could join a private tracker with my pathetic upload speed.

I thought they sold in Canada. Do you have a Barnes and Noble nearby?
Or do you ever see DVDs of stuff like The Seventh Seal, Solaris, or 8½? I think those were the first Criterions I watched. They were at the local library.

HMV and Best Buy, but they're generally over-priced compared to the States, I get mine south of border during B&N sales

our libraries generally do carry DVDs, better quality than old torrents of obscurer stuff

I didn't even know Barnes and Noble was in Canada since I never saw any, so there probably aren't any in the area. The nearest HMVs and Best Buys are over an hour away, haven't seen any Criterion films in them either.

Watched the clip that Criterion put up for A Special Day and it looks pretty great. Definitely seems like one of those rare surprise releases.

Film Movement has a large DVD catalog but I've seen very few of these

I was once browsing the Criterion releases at a Barnes and Noble with my sister when we were approached by two guys who looked more or less like the ones in this video. They asked us, "Are you guys 'Criterion collectors'?" and I immediately said no.
I didn't know that there existed an entire subculture of teens who spend their allowances on Criterion releases until this thread, but I now think they were trying to recruit me and my sister.
