JP Melville is obviously one of the major figures of this genre, as OP indicates with the image. Having seen eight of his films, my favorite is Le deuxième souffle. Army of Shadows and Le doulos are right up there too.

It's quite a revelation to see after watching Melville films. It was obviously a huge influence on him – really a prototype for so many of the points he hits again and again in his gangster films.
