There are a lot of great French crime films.

What are your favorites?

Plein Soleil has a strong Hitchcock feel, perhaps the most of any non-Hitchcock film.

What other Rene Clement films do you recommend? Besides Jeux interdits.

I've only see a few others but they were underwhelming.

Rider on the Rain was great for about 30 minutes though. Apparently Jim Morrison liked it since it inspired a Doors song.

Recently saw the MoC of this early Clouzot

Breddy good, it bridges the style of the old school parlor mystery with a mid-40s crime film

JP Melville is obviously one of the major figures of this genre, as OP indicates with the image. Having seen eight of his films, my favorite is Le deuxième souffle. Army of Shadows and Le doulos are right up there too.

Alphaville
inb4 blatantly obvious.

Surprised that's not in the thread here already.
It's quite a revelation to see after watching Melville films. It was obviously a huge influence on him – really a prototype for so many of the points he hits again and again in his gangster films.
