ITT: Christmas films you're planning to watch / you like to watch every year / you think others should know about

I plan to watch the first animated TV special, Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol (1962). The UPA style is a lot of fun. Although it's had many home releases (including Blu-Ray), over the years it's been greatly overshadowed by the Grinch and Charlie Brown.

I may watch Blast of Silence or The Apartment too. Both take place during Christmas and they're both great for different reasons.

If I could find it I'd like to see the colorized version of It's a Wonderful Life, just for (morbid?) curiosity's sake.

A couple other interesting picks: Wake in Fright (easy to forget it takes place during Christmas) and Lady in the Lake (the POV gimmick is notable despite the film's flaws)

White Christmas … pretty much stinks.

My family's always watched the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer animated special so that'll probably happen

I'm hoping for The Year Without a Santa Claus, if just for the Snowmiser/Heatmiser songs. God damn are they catchy

Wiseman's THE STORE is a left-field pick for yuletide fare.
It's a chronicle of goings-on at Neiman-Marcus in Dallas during the 1982 holiday season.

This clip showcases some of the hideous fashions of the era

I get the impression that the appeal of this special comes from viewing with nostalgia goggles. Most of its fans remember seeing it on TV when they were young. Since it was out of rotation by the time I came on the scene, it's impossible to have the same degree of affection.

The program is an odd stew of Magoo, Dickens and showtunes – the last element being difficult for me to embrace. Gags about Magoo's blindness are cast aside, presumably to keep the story on track. But if he can't really be himself, I wonder why put Magoo in the special at all.

It's interesting to read on IMDb how this special is being played on television this year. Dickens' own word "cripple" must be excised, and characters cannot be shown using snuff. Furthermore, an hour of programming in 1962 must be stretched to 90 minutes in 2014 to allow sufficient room for commercials. Humbug to all that…

I wouldn't recommend The Lion in Winter unless you like watching a play. For me there's too much self-indulgent acting and overlong scenes all building to a strangely anticlimactic ending

It's a well regarded "classic" but I dissent
