Can /film/ recommend some slow burners?
Something that may take a while to develop, gradually turns on the heat and builds to a nice climax?

 No.3163

There's this British horror-ish film Kill List by Ben Wheatly that I watched a few months back. Small scale stuff with a limited cast, doesn't bog itself down with too much backstory just a few hints here and there. Climax is pretty scary and bizarre.

Similarly Altered States is a film that takes lots of time to start up then gets pretty crazy once it gets going. Lots of weird visual effects.

I can't think of much else besides those two right this second, I might come back later if inspiration strikes.

From what I have seen Asghar Farhadi is a good fit, his movies seem to be lowkey and unassuming but build and build.

I'd kind of put Celine and Julie Go Boating in this category too.
I was a little bored at first, then things started clicking into place. I became very invested as the film progressed.

The Tenant is worth mentioning

but I had to keep switching the language track on the DVD I watched. It was either a French or English dub instead of being multilingual like the characters.

Les Diaboliques by Henri-Georges Clouzot, kinda like a French version of a Hitchcock thriller. It got my heart racing by the end.

I downloaded and watched Les Diaboliques last night based on this recommendation. You were right, it was very good; a beautifully lit movie with a psychological tension and moral complexity that is mostly absent from thrillers today. The Hitchcock comparison was apt.

I am not sure that I would describe it as a slow burner – once the fuse is lit, it moves fairly quickly, no?

Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad you liked it, even though someone else made the recommendation.

Les diaboliques is one of the best French thrillers from that period. Clouzot is one of my favorites. In fact I kind of prefer the old guard to the new wave…
