Films made fore the specific purpose of selling tickets through titillation. Not porn of any kind, but that kind slasher/giallo approach to sparking interest.

I think porn films should be included in discussion of sleaze. That format is not very popular anymore (due to websites) but people like Orson Welles' cameraman made a bunch of them.

I was talking about porn where the director had higher aspirations than just making smut. Maybe they had ideas for making a "real" movie, but could only get work directing porn. Or maybe they wanted to bridge the gap between hardcore and Hollywood. Whatever the motivation, it can be interesting to see the unusual things that were attempted.

One example would be 3 AM by "Robert McCallum" (aka Gary Graver pictured above). It's like a low-key domestic drama with explicit sex every fifteen minutes or so.

interesting. have you watched that movie? how was it?

the most "artsy porn" i know would be porn movies like pic related which barely have an story hold by a thread, but that are made for those who "watch porn for the plot"

Yeah he's an interesting director in this niche. I haven't seen Le Bête but Immoral Tales was fun.

His first live-action feature Goto Island of Love is worth seeing too. Despite the name it's not erotic. But it's cool to see how he directs outside the sexy genre.

That reminds me of Tinto Brass who made so many erotic movies, camera at ass level. One of his first films was a sci-fi comedy…kind of unexpected. The poor perv had a head injury and hasn't made anything lately.

I wish I could find the interview where he talks about people going to his films at xxx theatres and leaving confused

I'm not sure exactly where I stand on this one, but it's definitely divisive. One side would definitely put it in this category you mention. What does /film/ think?

To contribute to this topic I tried Quiet Days in Clichy (1970). Meh. I guess it's an example of publicity via controversy since it had trouble with censors. It mixed New Wave vérité with long fake love scenes and a dusting of Henry Miller prose. But overall I didn't find much interesting sex or substance.

>>5252

I didn't care for it but I don't recall many details. I guess the only reason you watch it is to satisfy your curiosity about why/how it was made.

Cannon Group?

I feel the same way, but I'm wondering if it counts in this thread. There's a bit of debate over whether it's pure titillation or if it was made for artistic reasons or even has any artistic merit.

Abel Ferrara is one of the most popular directors to make hardcore porn. I don't remember if he's a "performer" but he's part of the cast. Maybe worth seeing as a curiosity.

Some people are wondering about good movies that needed smut to sell, so I think The Telephone Book would be a good contribution to this discussion.

As soon as I watched it, it became one my favorite movies ever. It's definitely sexploitation, but in the hands of a director with lots of crazy ideas. Takes sexy satire and absurdism and crosses into the realm of avante garde. A really funny and intensely watchable film.

 No.5337

There's been a trend with newer movies to show unsimulated sex. I guess it's to compete with the proliferation of pornography? Often these movies aren't that interesting on their own merits, and would probably be overlooked otherwise.

Marie Poupee is full of nudity and the tone is rather strange. It's an interesting French curiosity but I won't say more than that. I don't want to spoil any of the odd plot.

Fuses (1965)

http://www.caroleeschneemann.com/fuses.html

> A silent film of collaged and painted sequences of lovemaking between Schneemann and her then partner, composer James Tenney; observed by the cat, Kitch.

> "…I wanted to see if the experience of what I saw would have any correspondence to what I felt– the intimacy of the lovemaking… And I wanted to put into that materiality of film the energies of the body, so that the film itself dissolves and recombines and is transparent and dense– as one feels during lovemaking… It is different from any pornographic work that you've ever seen– that's why people are still looking at it! And there's no objectification or fetishization of the woman." –Carolee Schneemann

Try Strip Nude for Your Killer

It's from when the giallo fad was waning so they added a bunch of nudity to keep things interesting

Hilarious title and the music is fan fucking tastic
