I think Soviet/Russian cinema is sometimes overlooked compared to countries like France and Italy. How about a dedicated thread here at /film/?

Russia has more to offer than the dozen titles that everyone knows about. Talk about your faves here, but also the films below the radar in the West. New releases and former Soviet states are welcome too.

A couple links to get the ball rolling…

Well, current Russian cinema is kinda in the shitter. Outside of few select filmmakers (and even those are slowly becoming mad due to aging) there's just nothing interesting going on compared to 80's - 90's burst of creativity. Partly that's because of old guard dying out, partly because of old guard not dying out but struggling to find funding (whereas in Soviet era their movies were government-funded). And of course, can't forget that part of directors who've firmly embedded themselves into positions of power and have been sucking financial aid while churning out complete shit (Mihalkov and most of the current Cinematographers' Union members).

Disappointing to hear that. The few I've seen lately made a good impression, but maybe I was lucky.

I've wondered about Russian Hamlet since it gets cited a lot. Does Shakespeare even work in a foreign language? Aren't you just reading the entire play via subtitles?

The best Shakespeare adaptions are Japanese.

OK, well I was pleased with The Ascent which I just watched. The tone was kind of like Come and See, which makes sense because the directors were husband and wife. It's tragic that Larisa Shepitko died early in life. But I will try to see her other films sometime.

Can anyone speak about Elem Klimov's filmography besides Come and See?
