Hi /film/. I've been thinking about starting a film blog, which I've done a few times before but I always give up on it. This time I'm going to try to be more committed to it, and as most people here seem to watch good movies and have interesting thoughts on them, I thought it might be kind of cool to reach out to you guys and see if anyone was interested in contributing some film writing.

I don't have any specific angle in mind, I was probably just going to write a few hundred words on whatever movies I've been watching recently, but I would be open to more structured ideas for recurring columns (i.e. a column covering all the Zatoichi movies or films of a certain director or country, whatever). I would also be open to making the whole thing more focused if anyone would be interested, one potential idea I had was covering "New Waves" of various countries. But I'll see what everyone wants to do.

As long as the writing is thoughtful and interesting I don't really care what the movies are, only restriction would be none of the really mainstream Hollywood stuff like Star Wars and Superhero movies, but I doubt anyone would want to write about that anyway. I don't expect this to go anywhere but I think it could be fun. If any of you are interested, let me know, I'm flexible and open to suggestions. Here's the initial site I made, subject to change: https://moviesfilmscinemablog.wordpress.com/

Nice.

I'm reconsidering what I wrote originally, because it sounds pretty unenthusiastic and boring. I've been thinking a lot over the last few days, and there's actually pretty big potential in this idea. There are a ton of underground music blogs, often they get popular and then become labels or bigger websites, like TinyMixTapes. There isn't much of an equivalent for film; sure, there are a decent amount of personal blogs and things, but there's no center for finding good content about non-mainstream film. FilmComment is alright, and TheDissolve was good for a while, sometimes less than good, but it's no longer around.

Basically, I can't think of any websites with a lot of content devoted to specifically arthouse/foreign/old/non-mainstream film, and I do think there is an audience for that. I think we would be in a unique position to create that kind of blog/site, and I think the possibilities for growth are endless. Cahiers du Cinema was started by a bunch of film fans, and they became one of the most influential voices on film theory and criticism. The amount of resources they had back then were incredibly limited compared to what we have now. With the internet, we have access to just about every movie ever made, every book ever written, every magazine article and piece of film criticism; to publish the content doesn't require a printing press or money, it's free and can be done with a few clicks from the comfort of our own homes. The barrier for entry is so low that success is not only conceivable, but easily achievable.

Not to mention that we have a built in international community of film fans who have experience writing, at least as far as it requires writing to participate in a forum, but maybe beyond that. I personally have written film criticism for my college newspaper and personal blogs over the years. But experience doesn't matter, as long as we have passion and a decent number of people contributing decent content. I know the site hasn't been very active recently but at one point it seemed like there were at least a few dozen people on here, and people who genuinely care about film.

What I'm talking about is essentially crowd-sourced film critisicism, and if at least a few people were interested we could really get something done. We could be the Cahiers du Cinema of the internet age, or even an entirely new way of creating a film journal/blog. 4chan and 8chan and forums in general are some of the most insane things that have existed in the history of humanity, from a theoretical/sociological perspective, and I don't think anyone has even begun to grasp what they are, or the possibilities of what could come from them. On 4chan, /lit/ has written multiple books, which seems like a terrible and unreadable book, but they actually DID something. With a little bit more focus we could do something too, turn the dynamic of a forum outward from insularity and exile, into the public sphere, and see what happens. Lately in my life I haven't had much to excite me, but the possibilities of this are exciting to me, and I hope some of you can see what I'm seeing and share some of the enthusiasm. Maybe I'm just manic and this all sounds naive, but I'm interested to hear what people think. Send an email my way if you have any interest at all.

Well, it sounds like a great idea. I have no idea how many people frequent this place, less those who are interested in writing film criticism. So I'm not sure how much support this project might get. All the best anyway.

Yeah good luck for anyone participating. I'm not able to contribute anything substantial at the moment but it would be cool to see people create something out of this

Thanks, I think the amount of people/interested people on this board will be the biggest problem, it's always been pretty slow but lately it has hardly been active at all. Who knows. I might try recruiting from /lit/ at some point, I saw a thread over there about film books and a good amount of people seemed to have good taste and know what they were talking about, plus I imagine a good amount would be interested in writing. The only problem is that it might be difficult to catch those people at the right time, and would potentially get a lot of trolling or spam. But we'll see. I'll see if anyone around here is interested over the next week or so and if not I may expand the search

How about you get some good content on your blog first? An empty wordpress blog won't entice anyone to join.

Fair enough, I've just put up some things I've written, some are kind of old but I updated them a bit, especially the Hong Sang-soo one because I just saw his new film. I think the stuff I put up is decent but not necessarily representative of what I want this blog to become, I think when writing these originally my aim was more to give an impression of the films rather than explore a certain aspect in depth. I think the Hong Sang-soo piece is probably the best one on there, so if you want to read one of them, I would make it that one.

Pretty funny, although the design of the site isn't really my concern right now. I just used a Wordpress preset, I will change it later but for now I'm more focused on content

I just want to make something. I see a lot of good discussion about movies on this board and I feel like with just a little bit of polish and effort people could turn their thoughts into something readable that can escape the insularity of the board and be visible to more people and maybe inspire them to watch something different, or think of the things they have watched in a different way.

Thanks, I plan to keep writing stuff and putting it up and hopefully other people will get on board soon enough
