UPDATE: Shit's fucked, Josh has gone full Chris-chan with his utter ineptitude in fixing next, and Hotwheels has more or less done nothing to respond to people's concerns. I recommend that everybody migrate to https://endchan.xyz/vr/ to avoid the oncoming storm. I own the board, I help run the site, and it's running on an engine that's basically what Infinity Next was supposed to be. If you need me, that's where I'll be.

PSA: 8chan will be migrating to Infinity Next soon.

It's nowhere near finished, the developer is a meme-spouting faggot who got fired from programming for CWCiki for incompetence, and everybody from /v/ to /tech/ has complained that the board software is buggy, ugly, and effectively shoehorns a framework for a Reddit clone into the imageboard format. But our Fearless Leader has decided that Infinity simply cannot be used in its current state, so all board and post data is being migrated to Infinity Next within the next day or so.

You can read about the migration process, try out infinity next, and tell Josh to go kill himself here:

https://beta.8ch.net/next/thread/5126

More information about Infinity Next can be found at:

https://infinitydev.org/

https://beta.8ch.net/next/

About time I got an actual rules sticky here.

This board is for the discussion of games released for consoles introduced before or during 1999, the consoles themselves, as well as PC and PS2/Xbox/GC games released before or during 2003.
Ports, remakes, and mods of games eligible for discussion under this rule are also eligible for discussion.

As a special exception due to their absolute age and relative lack of shitposting magnets, both the Dreamcast and Game Boy Advance count as acceptable platforms for discussion.

NSFW content is allowed, but must be spoilered and must be directly related to a game eligible for discussion.
Please do not post large porn dumps, go to >>>/vp/ for that.

Well, I mean, it was just several months ago when /v/ was already completely overrun by the cancerous hordes that we hoped stayed behind on halfchan. Still, I've seen old-timers pop up now and then even at that stage. Probably none of those saw the thread at the time and then it just fell off the board.

Also, overdue pic.

Nevermind, found a good engine.

Must say, I'm actually very impressed. I played DOOM and didn't like it because the enemy variety was low and the pacing felt kinda slow and repetitive, but holy shit I'm loving this one.

The atmosphere is amazing and the level design is great. The enemies take some thought to kill and the weapons are pretty good.

Can someone please explain why most people praise DOOM over Quake?

DOOM came out in 1993, established the FPS Shooter Genre and kick started today's Video Gaming Culture.

Quake came out 1996 and was just a really good FPS Shooter, that made good use of true 3D graphics.

That being said, I did actually beat that place without the Lens when I was a kid. This was before I even entered the Well or knew about the Lens.

I don't know if I'm stupid or what, but I beat the shadow temple, and the rest of the game, without ever knowing about the Lens of Truth. In the temple I just probed a shitload with the longshot, looked at the map for clues about where rooms should be, hit every wall with my sword, and used a pinch of intuition about where things "should" be in terms of level design in a couple spots.

I don't know if I could do it again if I wiped my knowledge of the game. When I was young and gaming was the most important fucking thing in the world I was tenacious about it. Bongo Bongo is still probably my favorite boss fight in that game in terms of coolness.

This game is COMPLETELY unknown and obscure to American Gen Z kids born in 1995-1999 like you. The casual generation, YOLO generation. When you saw the trailer for the PS4 reboot, I'm sure you were scratching your heads.

Ask an American 16 year old if he/she's used played this game and they'll say "wat dat." Ask them what their favorite old-school games are and they'll say "Sonic Heroes, Bully, Simpsons hit n Run, God of War, Gears of War, modern warfare 2, Kingdom Hearts, Battle for Bikini Bottom, Crash Twinsanity, lego star wars, sonic adventure 2, Halo. those were da bess, swag yolo. 👌👏👌👏👌👏"

You selfie-taking pieces of shit still claim to be a "le 90s kid" despite not remembering the 90s, not knowing what Pete and Pete is, not knowing what Clarissa Explains It All is, never touching an SNES, and growing up with shittastic shows that were the antithesis of the 90s like spongebob, Code lyoko, camp lazlo, squirrel boy, gym Partner, Kids next Door, Jimmy Neutron, iCarly, Drake & Josh, Naked Brothers band, avatar, and that fucking Ned show.

So are people who love music/movies/books/television shows from decades/centuries ago posers who shouldn't be acknowledged?

Some people are snobs about being "oldschool" and that's a shame because the best way to keep good games alive is to invite younger generations to try them.

 No.4324

Hah I always end up feeling left out of most of those "only '90s kids will understand" things even though I was born in '91 because my parents were too poor/stubborn to pay for cable back then. My childhood TV memories are mostly of fiddling with rabbit ears and watching static-y reruns of '80s sitcoms. Makes me feel more like an '80s kid than a '90s kid in some ways

Part of that could be a legit backlash to the accelerated trend in recent years to appropriate "retro" stuff by people who only want to utilise it to status signal ("such nerd, much vintage").

Part of it could simply be people being "muh sekrit club" dickwads.

File: 1457232056546.jpg (243.74 KB, 713x1056, 713:1056, shadow_of_the_beast_ad.jpg)

This game (well the very first SotB game) is what made me buy an Amiga 500, back in 1991. The guy had a few other games we played: Xenon II, Menace, Blood Money, and some 2-player tank game that was pretty fun but I can't remember the name.

Anyway the first Beast game had pefectly smooth scrolling with lots of parallax layers, big sprites, and a that beautiful soundtrack with pan pipes. Had never seen or heard anything like it before.

The controls are pretty rough by console standards though. It's up to jump, and just the one fire button to attack. Pretty typical for computer games with joystick back then. If you want something easier, the Sega Genesis game is pretty good, but doesn't quite match the graphics and sound of the original.

Anyway it's a pretty tough game. Made it to the bottom of the castle level without cheating, and no further. It's pretty easy to get ganked in this game. You kind of have to memorize patterns and stuff, like in Ninja Gaiden.

Anyway the game was impressive then, but maybe not as much now for someone who's seen even better stuff on Neo-Geo and such. I still like its weird and unique atmoshphere. Some other good Amiga games to try: Gods, Satan, Leander, Risky Woods, Lionheart, Toki, Prince of Persia, Another World, Flashback.

On a scale of one to ten, how would you rate your pain?

I'm actually somewhat interested. Most of the people involved with the production have quite a pedigree. Yes I know it's probably going to do shit and I have plenty of my own doubts. My wishlist for this thing is that it's open so I can put my own emulators and such on it if I so desire (seems like it will), have at least some level of internet connectivity (mainly for software purposes- shitty android devs, for example, are more likely to flock to it if it's got some sort of Android compatibility or a way to download games off the web? I don't know man. Just having android-type games run easy on this thing would be gr8), run decently and be easy to record. Shit, the price is even acceptable.

 No.4488

File: 1456821458815.gif (4.72 MB, 600x336, 25:14, 1437784587892.gif)

I really would LOVE for it to succeed. I like the idea of having an FPGA inside a console, and not just for hardware emulation purposes (Would that properly be called "emulation"?). Plus, the idea of some devs releasing games with the same quality standards as older systems would be great (game would have to be bug-free on launch, etc.).

But, there's no way the FPGA inside of it can be high-end enough to really show its benefits compared to standard CPU's/GPU's, that would just be too expensive. So it would be relegated to doing the console-core thing, and be something for dev's to play with (but that won't really affect users too much). Most developers, particularly indies, are also very reliant on internet updates now, so they would probably avoid developing for it immediately.

Might be a good Retron-3 replacement, though.

 No.4491

>>4489

No it's not. I even know what you're talking about and both of those claims are bullshit.

>>4488

Yeah, I'm mostly intending to use it as a better Retron 5. For $150 they could easily make some sort of much more powerful Android dealy so the hardware is going to be less efficient than it could be but that's fine, it doesn't need to be high end. I think it has some sort of ARM chip on it. And maybe it'll have internet connectivity.
