 No.72[Last 50 Posts]

best film of the year thread

 No.74

But that's not Boyhood, dummy

nor Interstellar, but that one I've yet see

 No.76

>>72
I'd go The Wind Rises or Two Days, One Night.
>>74
Boyhood just didn't really get me like it did some, I quite liked it and all, it just seemed a bit disconnected and empty to me.

 No.78

>>72
although I did really enjoy Calvary, was good shit, despite the old couple talking behind me in the cinema, fucking pricks.

 No.79

>>74
Is boyhood any good… I heard it was meh.

 No.81

>>79
it is very good, just, for me at least, not as good as the hype, still worth seeing, if nothing else just for the way it was made.

 No.83

>>78
>go to see GotG
>bunch of shitty kids screaming in the back
>get to the point of getting so pissed I forget I'm not on 4chan
>almost stand up and call them faggots
>stop myself
>gets pissed
>go see film at a small cinema so I don't have to deal with kids again
>fucking old ppl…

I know that feel Anon

 No.84

>>79
I can tell you right now that it's going to win an Oscar, unless Interstellar is like second coming of Jesus Christ, which I doubt (it'll be 2011 all over again, where Inception won all technical and tied with Social Network in number of statues, with actors awards going to individual films) It's really good, but not massively epic, though I suspect future generations will consider this film important and cinema defining.

 No.89

>>83
yeah I mostly see my films at smaller cinemas, this one too, just this one fucking time there were some fucking old pricks.
Every time there was a shot of some mountains they went something like "ooh that's nice, I wonder where that is" so fuckign annoying.

 No.92

>>84
It will probably get an Oscar and it was very good but don't think it'll be considered a defining film. Also holy shit I forgot about Under the Skin that is absolutely my favourite of the year (thus far)

 No.111

>>89
>"ooh that's nice"

I can so fucking picture, "Look dear we went to a place like that?" "I think so my love" "yes yes we diddd" "whatever you say darling"

 No.113

>>72
me and my brother saw this a little while ago. We both liked it a lot but we wished that there was more context for the man wanting to murder the priest. Like, why then? If he had known the priest his whole life and was molested when he was young why that week in particular. It's not really important but just something that kind of bothered us. We didn't rule out the idea that we might have missed something.

 No.114

>>111
it was getting to that level, they were right behind me as well,
but there were decent periods of time when they shut the fuck up
and it was a relatively light hearted (in parts) film, so it wasn't too bad.

 No.117

>>113
I felt that way for a bit, but I guess that is how he did it don't forget he was fucking nuts… He was not thinking like a normal human he was out of his mind, he most likely used 4chan and played video games…

He might have just snapped and planed what he was going to do for a long time, don't forget it takes balls to pull that type of shit off… He might have tried when he was younger but pussyed out.

 No.122

>>117
Yea that's something we figured too. I really like movies like this, dealing with religion in the modern world. I liked how the ending was sort of a mirror to the death of jesus, at least the part where he has the chance to run away and live but chooses not to.

 No.124

>>113
I quite liked that, the concept of a man just deciding to do it, cos I think people would, I quite liked just the sudden change and decision.
Although I can completely understand what you're saying I thought it was kind of realistic to some extent, I think that's how it would be done.

 No.125

File: 1411251370868.jpg (439.46 KB, 1400x2100, 2:3, under-the-skin.27563.jpg)

>>92
just gonna bring some more attention to the existence of Under the Skin cos holy shit that film.

 No.128

>>122
I viewed it more of him representing the church as a hole.

It was nice to see a film about religion in modern times that was not a circle jerk of "GOD IS GOOD! NO JESUS NO PEACE!? KNOW JESUS KNOW PEACE!!!" or "HAHAHAHAHA LOOK AT THIS DUMB FUCK!!! HE IS BEGGING SOMEONE WHO DOES NOT EXIST TO MAKE SURE HIS MOTHER DOES NOT DIE FROM AIDS! WELL FUCK NUTS IF GOD LOVED YOU WHY DID HE GIVE HER AIDS!?"

 No.129

>>125
Have not seen it yet Inco, is it good? Also nice get.

 No.132

>>128
That was one of the best things about it, although for me it came across as somewhat preachy at times.
>>129
To me it was fucking incredible, really beautifully surreal, interestingly minimalist story, design and production and just visually impressive and well made.
Some sections were emotionally brilliant too and it was one of those films that just left me amazed and confused.
the ending was a bit dodgy but other than that I thought it was fucking great, but it has been quite divisive so some people might not be into it.
but if you like surreal, simple, weird films with interesting ideas and film making and which are open to interpretation, then go for it.

 No.134

>>132
I will watch it when it comes out for DvD/Blueray

 No.137

>>128
I agree, that is definitely an aspect of the movie that I enjoyed. Especially after a movie like "God's not Dead" being released in the same year it's good to see that movies dealing with the topic of religion can still be made without insulting the audiences intelligence.

 No.139

>>134
it's definitely worth seeing, interesting even if you're not into it. I think it came out on DVD/Blu Ray recently actually.

 No.201

>>72

Except calvary was fucking shit.

Only the priest and his daughter were memorable characters, everyone else played the role of charicature and the script was fucking dog shit.

 No.203

>>201
eh, I suppose I'd agree to some extent, certainly not best film of the year,
but it had some good shots, a pretty good atmosphere and some good moments, thought it was a very good film really.

 No.204

>>201
Angry black dude who may have been raped as a kid, bar tender who is pissed, atheist doctor who hates humanity, the rich man who has everything but happiness, I do hope you watched the same film I did.

 No.205

File: 1411257748251.jpg (76.76 KB, 950x672, 475:336, intouchables.jpg)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k016mR9tQdI

Name one film more heart warming, I want to know.

 No.207

>>205
Woops that was supposed to be a topic.

 No.210

Black raped dude who did not mind women who cheat and beats them, athist dr who hates most things, old American who liked the nazis… Each one of them had a story of their own. I don't think you saw the same film.

 No.217

>>205
That movie is pure an utter shit.

Everything about the movie, the ghetto negro and wealthy white man who "forget all their differences and become besties!!," it's cloyingly feel good, emotionally manipulative nature, could only warm the heart of someone who has the mindset of a infant.

 No.218

 No.219

You guys are autismal, Snowpiercer was my favorite film of the year.

 No.227

File: 1411277219728.jpg (35.51 KB, 600x338, 300:169, journey-to-the-west-still.jpg)

I need to watch more films from this year.

I enjoyed Tsai Ming Liang's Journey to the West

 No.228

>>72
I wouldn't call it film of the year. It's great and I really enjoyed it but as a story it doesn't work that well. It's heavy on message but everything in the movie is bult around trying to communicate it. A bit clumsy that.

 No.229

>>228
Watch the Guard. Much better in my opinion. The director and his brother make some top notch stuff.

 No.231

>>204

Oh I did and I can tell you that none of those characters came across as believable.

There's a point where the incredible just leaves you incredulous and calvary crosses that line almost immediately.
I'd already zoned out and stopped caring long before that one poofter sits in the church talking about chicks with dicks.

 No.242

>>228
This seems pretty accurate to me, it's still a good film though.
>>231
And you've got to admit that's a purely subjective thing, to me they were all fairly believable, just depends on how much you're willing to suspend your disbelief unless they were
utterly ridiculous and unbelievable to all I don't think that could be seen as an objective problem that makes the film awful.

 No.248

>>134
It's not that great.

It's interesting, but not something you'll look back on as a major step in cinema.

 No.249

>>248
I think that shows how divisive it was, cos for me it was a fucking amazing film.
probably won't think of it as a big step in the future but it's certainly in my top 20 or 30 favourites.
I really loved it but yeah I understand why it wasn't that great to some people, but as I said even if you're not a big fan it's worth a watch.

 No.275

testing to see if using a name works, thought I'd start to ride under a name since anonymity seems a little unnecessary on a board like this, so I'm the brit that started the top 10 thread and who got 100th and 200th post, not the one who's going on about how shit /tv/ is.

 No.288

Favorite film this year is Hard To Be a God. Also really enjoyed tml's Xi You. What else should i watch?

 No.295

>>288
not seen either of those so I couldn't say whether these suggestions are better and I'm relatively new to the world of cinema in general but my favourites thus far have been The Wind Rises, Boyhood and Under the Skin, they're probably the three films I've seen that are worth watching.
Watched Locke, Calvary and a few other things too which were all pretty good and interesting but they don't need to be seen.

 No.297

>>79
It's definitively worth watching: just don't go to the cinema expecting a modern masterpiece or anything in that vein. In my honest imho, it's very interesting, but it could have been much more great if Linklater had focused in realism and character development as much as he did in generational clichés and cultural references. A 7.5/10 4me.

>>125
>>219
My fav flicks of the year.

 No.299

>>297
this is pretty much spot on on Boyhood. And I missed Snowpiercer, shame I like Tilda Swinton and it looked really fucking interesting.

 No.304

>>295
Live seen all of those but thanks for the response. I would recommend hard to be a god for you.

 No.305

>>299
Tilda was great in it like everything she does but I didn't like Snowpiercer. Too much schlock and the "symbolism" was like a brick to the face.

Either way I'm not letting you fuck my fiancee.

Those are my favourites of the year, only I haven't seen The Wind Rises, Boyhood and Under The Skin are my favourites, in fact I've made a thread about the latter >>463
Locke and Calvary were great films, I'd say they're both like 8 or 9, Calvary for it's story and production and Locke for the fantastic use of form.

I'll check out this Hard to be a God also.

It's not nearly as good as the Antichrist. Has its moments but I do not consider it an outstanding movie.

I've seen a total of 5 films from 2013 and only one from 2014.

I do plan to watch this neo-giallo, even if it's not great. I like the fetish for retro style found in Amer and Berberian Sound Studio, even if the substance was light at times.

if you are talking to me yeah i watched both and theatrical, i'm sad to say, was better
i might have thought differently if i'd seen dc first but i really feel that in the dc pacing is obliterated and the few new scenes are truly unnecessary and i wouldn't say that lightly about something filmed by lars
the extent of my aversion to the dc though when i am so in love with lvt makes me think it's probably to do with the fact that i had watched the theatrical sooo many fucking times that any departure from it was always going to feel wrong
idk

http://sensesofcinema.com/2015/world-poll-2/introduction-2014-world-poll/

Welcome to the 11th Senses of Cinema World Poll.

Unlike most other end of year polls, this one does not result in an aggregated “top 10 of the year” list. That is not the point of the poll. Rather, we wish to present a snapshot of the favourite films of Senses readers, contributors and friends (mostly international programmers, critics, filmmakers and cinephiles).

Yes the parameters may be looser – we encourage submissions of older films, for example, firmly believing that such viewing keeps cinephilia alive and is always in dialogue with contemporary film viewing. Perhaps occasionally things may seem almost chaotic. But this reflects the heterogeneity of international film-going.

Lastly, while many lists reflect what was released in cinemas through official distribution channels, it is exciting to see lists from all over the world that resonate strongly with the cinephile’s innate hunger for discovery. Many entries continue to include works seen on TV or the Internet. And a more open embrace of these aesthetic tendencies spills over into some of the films themselves, not the least in the multi-textural and allusive Adieu au langage by Jean-Luc Godard, perhaps the film that appears the most times in the Poll.

 No.2951

>>2947
Ah okay. I've tried to do that too with a few directors, but often get derailed by shiny new blurays from later parts of the filmography.

 No.2952

Nice call, this does sound pretty goddamn cool…

Created at irregular intervals, Pierre Léon’s small oeuvre oscillates between experimental home movie and theatrical mise-en-scène, found footage and documentary assemblages. PHANTOM POWER is a kind of sum of these rich and lavish efforts, a poetic series of cinematic fragments, an inventory of his cinematic output. What unfolds between russian folk songs and Ingrid Caven’s singing, between micro-dramas and found footage, is the poetic world of this wayward and still unknown artist, whose discovery and recognition is long overdue.

 No.2953

>>2952
i think i would comfortably recommend it to everyone
if you like lang there is something very special there

>>2951
yeah it can be difficult to decide what to do but if i have decided i am going to watch someone's films chronologically i will stick to it. supposing adieu turned out to be godard's last film i would want to have seen everything else he did beforehand first, that's what the chronology thing is really about to me
when you have seen films like turin horse and offret it becomes difficult not to treat everything new like it may be the last and think that you should be anticipating a farewell from one of your favourite filmmakers
