Art Thread 2.0:

/fur/ community tag:

Basic Tips:

Alright, so this is an art thread. Share your art, shill your commissions, offer art trades, give advice, ask for advice about your art, ask for resources you need to advance, ask for what types of resources you'd need to advance, share exercises, share inspiring music or inspiring artists, or anything else related to the creation of visual art! Don't know what to draw? Take some requests in our Draw Thread.

and we're back.

so for >>27685 asking about drawing an well crafted ass. these tips should help out.

I'm starting to color one of my sketches. Any thoughts before I go further?

These will come in handy

looks good anon, a femboi fan huh?

Klonoas face might be a little lopsided and melty but other than that I dont see anything standing out at me right now. do you flip your canvas?

>do you flip your canvas?

No, but that's probably a good idea. I know I need to tweak the left eye, but what else about it seems lopsided?

just the muzzle mouth opening, it's not lined up. its really minor but otherwise if you asked someone outside the board they would probably give you the vague answer that something "off" but they cant tell what

Blocking out some dragon man anatomy, probably will add more curve to his neck so it's more graceful rather than straight.

Probably have to add more mass to some of the back muscles as the back still feels a bit flat.

Question for you and the other more advanced modelers I've seen on here: Do you guys also rig your models? How hard is it to learn? Always wanted to take a crack for stuff like EG game model replacers.

>that chin

Brow is very T-rex, cool, but the curvature on rear to mid jaw might be excessive.

Why not put this in the draw thread?

Because the drawthread has hundreds of requests and a dozen deliveries.

because /art/ threads are for general improvment. /draw/ threads are for requesting or delivering free shit. they've been separate since the start of /art/ threads.

we could always crosslink the two threads so its easier to bounce between them.

Other 3D guy here.

Do I rig my models? It depends. If it doesn't need to animate then it's a waste of time, I can do posing without a rig.

If it does need a rig, then yes, it's quite tricky to build a proper rig. Although there's automatic rigging scripts to aid you in the process, they're useless if you don't know how to rig yourself in the first place.

For game model replacers, you're in luck, because you must use the same rig the developers used, unless you want to redo all the animations aswell (even then, it's still probably going to fuck itself at some point if you use a different rig). So the hard part for you is going to be having good topology and skinning the new geometry with the old bones.

Wait, isn't rigging the same thing for posing?

No, not necessarily. I'm talking about animation-ready rigs.

zbrush lets you deform the model via a simplified rig, which is more than enough to strike a pose. The raptor fellow here >>27429

was posed that way.

not the 3d anon but no it isntzbrush has transposing which doesnt take any rigging what so ever, and if you want to actually do a good job in a normal 3d program rigging is a whole mess of things like needing proper weight on the bones and making sure the skin isnt tearing vertices when you try to make a pose with it.

File: a657036d349bb2b⋯.png (818.56 KB, 1553x934, 1553:934, klonoa.PNG)

Just about done. I'm not sure if I'll bother putting more effort on the anons.

How does it look?

I'm looking for artists willing to draw from reference. Absolutely no deviation or "making it your own" through "stylization". Line for line the exact character in a pose I want.

So far, I have three people in mind that are willing to do this.

But adding more to my list of possible buys is always good because you never know, they could be dead tomorrow.

Anyone here fit this criteria or know someone who does?

>im looking for a tracejob

Yeah, practically. I don't care to see how you think you're better at designing characters than the original creator.

Let me guess: it's Sonic, right?

No, though I wish. That'd make it a lot easier.

Nice, though, that we live in a world with standards so low that I have to go out of my way to find people who will draw a character without fucking it up completely, and my desire for this is so controversial that I'm immediately accused of being autistic.

stop beating around the bush faggot, just give a character. even banifag has more of a spine than this

Consider following your word and leaving for good Salos.

ah that explains it

lets get this thread off eeriefag and back on track

>>28583 looks decent, simple shading but i dont see anything wrong with it. the only thing left is cleanup since i dont think youl be taking it to much more of a render

Draw me like one of your french foxes.

Honestly, it's getting easier, especially with auto rigging scripts that now do a huge chunk of the work for you. But of course if you want the best results you do it by hand.

Like the other anons were saying you can make a very simple rig in zbrush just to pose your character, or make a more complicated one for use in games/animation/etc.

A rig is essentially three things, a skeleton comprised of bones, which create the framework and tell the computer where the model should bend and where it shouldnt - the skin, which tells the computer which parts of the model should stretch and compress, and how closely they follow the bones - and finally fancy rigging tools that use math and other stuff to make legs or arms automatically work as a whole instead of moving the thigh, then the lower leg, then the foot, you can just move the foot and the rest of the leg follows suit.

The fancy rigging stuff is optional, but it makes life easier when doing lots of animations. Setting up the bones is simple enough, skinning gets a little tedious, but following some tutorials you should be able to make a simple rig without too much pain if you have experience with 3d software.

Like the other anon said though, if you're modding or replacing game characters you have the bones all set up, you just have to skin them to your new model, which if your new model is vastly different from the old one, you will likely get some funky problems!

Thanks for the comments, I'll tweak the face a bit

File: 335eda1035537e8⋯.png (1.46 MB, 1277x3048, 1277:3048, Nsio - Line Dynamics.png)

Use lineweight. As a general rule of thumb, your lines should be the thick(er) where shadows are located at and your lines should be thin(er) where light is located at.

That last thing "drawing pringles" seems hard as fuck with a mouse or a pen, but I can do it literally effortlessly with the tip of my finger. It's makes me wonder if there's any sort of tablet that has an art stylus that is literally just a teeny nub on a thimble you stick on your fingertip. Seems it would make drawing a whole lot easier.

do you have a touchscreen? how do you know if its accurate moving your finger in the motion

I don't. I'm just saying it's a hell of a lot simpler to fine-control the tip of your finger (which you have been doing all your life) than learn how to use a pen as an "extension of your body" at the same level of intuitive simplicity.

I guess we'd need either a super sensitive resistive touch screen, or some kind of hybrid resistive/capacitive one.

sure i see your point. you could always try to hold the pen vertical close to your finger instead of holding it the way you were taught to hold a pencil. i know some artists that do that for a more precise result but you gotta unlearn the old way, and it takes more effort to maintain it.

It's just line weight distribution. If you have pen pressure, you just push your pen down harder in particular areas.

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play.

not really, "pringles skating" isnt lineweight practice thats coordination practice, like drawing elipses over and over and straight lines over and over. the airplane is lineweight practice.

dropping another resource for >>28714 its got a lot of the same info as the pic in >>28762 but in video format for those who want it

Ooooh nice, this never occurred to be before, it seems like a great drag that I have to shade both before and after making the lines now though

>I have to shade both before and after making the lines now though

Well, you should already know where the lightsource is going to be in the sketching/construction. By the time you get to inking that should just be reinforcing it, allowing you to place the thicker portions where the shading will already be.

Do you have FA/IB?

I have a DA

You might want to add reflections in the water. It doesn't have to be accurate, but it'll look a lot more natural.

play store app called ArtFlow that i actually bought because the free version only allowed you to use 2 layers and limited undos. it's only like 2.99 i think

i actually did have a few references open at the time, but the app is kinda hard to maneuver with larger scale painting like with back grounds. and honestly at that point i kinda wanted to get it done (my hand was cramping up from drawing on a tiny screen) . and yeah you just reminded me that i totally forgot about their reflections

i have done something like that before, it just slipped my mind

Alright guys, I'm still playing with fur, and lighting, and blah blah blah. Hands, shoulders/neck and above , pants, etc are very unfinished at this stage. Right now I'm just combining a bunch of different fur methods and lighting thinking I finally have half a grasp of what to use where. Maybe. One of these fucking days I'll be ready for commission if I don't die of old age first. Update with finished head later.

Looking good, anon. The chest hair looks a little too big though, you should scale it down.

I experimented with a different style of coloring, cause on the first pic related I was a try hard of a realistic kinda shading, which I don't think it fits my style. So I went for a different approach, more cartoonish kinda shading on second pic related, what do you guys think?

First has that gross "i used gradients!" style that just doesn't work with those colors. Second looks fine if not a little moeblobby.

the "I used gradients!" look is because the anon didnt control them enough.

Simple cleanup with hard edged brushes against the gradients would help or using the lassos to control where a hard edge on a soft edge is.

If you have to spend extra time putting them down, and still go back over it anyway, I don't see why learning brush control in the first place isn't better.

going back over things is part of brush control, its very unlikely youl be able to do a hard edge and soft edge all in one stroke. like with lost edges. but the good brush economy comes into how many times you paint over an area being minimalized.

Mostly just want a place to put this.

I didn't do the linework, it was a commission Argento had done, but I wanted a color version dammit, so I colored it. I couldn't put it on a booru board, so here it is. Tried to emulate his recent style.

This took me all fuckin weekend because dad kept coming into my room while I was drawing ;-(

I forgot how much I loved drawing. Did that coloring with a mouse, despite that it was fun. My old cheap horrible tablet died years ago, so as a little lap-around-the-sun present to myself I just ordered a Cintiq. I've never drawn directly to a screen, really looking forward to bumping up my art game.

Maybe in a few days I'll post something 100% original. :D

If I can give advice when it comes to fire; don't use outlines. Instead, anywhere you would use an outline on the inside of the flame, use white or pale yellow billows. If on the outside, drop them entirely.

This is my general rule for light sources, especially things like fire which don't have "edges" in real life.

I fear that if my family finds out I'm into art and drawing they'll shower me with endless praise and bring it up constantly, I claim to own wacom solely because I play OSU (I don't)

Maybe if that happened I could show them some of my cringy furfag material so they'd just disown me instead

Just draw landscapes to use as backgrounds and show them those

Let me tell you a little story

Back in january I was at a family reunion, there I got in touch with like my dad's cousin or something, turns out he went to art school together with my dad and is a pretty accomplished artist.

Having gone to art school though he only ever paints weird abstract shit, we went around and discussed art, he showed me some of his paintings that were hung around on the walls in his home, we discussed things like art mediums, figure drawings and the like, turns out he had no experience with a tablet

Anyway, as the party dragged on he suggested he come over to my city sometime so we can look at each other's work, probably while sitting in a coffee shop or something, in the 6 months since he hasn't called but ever since that night I've had some mild anxiety he'll head on over, I really have never drawn anything I'd like to show anyone who isn't a weirdo on the internet but if he decides to come here I really don't have much of a choice, I'll have to pull out my degenerate anthro internet drawings.

I'm actually in really deep shit, fuck.

Got that Cintiq. I am *freakishly* out of practice. For lack of a better style, I just filled it the same as I did with Argentos' work, only with my own linework.

That being said, first time using Krita, first time on a tablet, it could have been worse. :D

Nice work anon, seems a little shiny though.

Are there artists in this thread that have a style and skill that matches the baldurs gate series? (pic related) I recently got into the BG series and cant stop. I use an irl pic of me for my char wich is cool but even cooler would be a pic that matches in art style. Also im trough BG1 already and some 40 hours into 2 so when i'm trough that im going to start the icewind dale ones and in those im gonna mod one of the characters into a gnoll wich i'm gonna do a pic of my dog in. Any help would help me that point me into the direction of an artist capable of that. I never bought commisions but that would enhance my game experience so much that im ready to spend coin for that.

The thing is just that i need an artist with similar style that does furrys and humans.

If it's that low res then I can do a shoop for you.

i didnt find another picture, i wanted a real high res one, that i maybe can also hang onto my wall, if i spent money on it i may as well get everything out of it thats possible. Like a real cool pic where me and my dog are in armor and stuff. I dont know how much commisions cost on average but i think i can pay for it. I just try to get a relativly unknown, but skilled artist. I just dont get how you could ever spend 1000$+ not even on a commision but on a YCH, i would never YCH no matter how down in life i am.

colors arent what you should be focusing on right now, you should be looking at values. work on getting your colors correct after you understand how to use values. afterwords you can throw it ontop as a layer to effect your colors like multiply for shadows, screen for lights, or overlay for both.

... The... Uuuhhhh. Huh. I don't know what happened.

What it *looks* like I've done is twist our unfortunate pink bunny in a way that breaks the anatomy too much to recover. I mean, her rib cage kinda disappeared.

I think 90% of it is that I started with the cat, added the bunny on top, and when I fixed some inconsistencies back at the cat, I didn't pay attention to what I had done to pinky there.

Now it's of those pictures where, the more you look at it, the worse it gets. XD

Maybe I'll try a few more singles before I jump into the deep end again. :)

Actually, I'm fairly happy with the cat, maybe if I just ditch the rabbit...

... Nope. The inconsistencies in her are minor in comparison to the rabbit, but she has a couple. So, yeah, IN THE TRASH WITH IT!

heres one of the first things i drew on it. kinda shitty but i think i've gotten better

yeah, remember to break things down into planes. so the front of the shelves and books will be lighter than the back side. . i couldnt really tell where your sun light was coming from but if its from above youl need some shadows under each shelf unless the whole bookcase is in shadow.

is there anyone to like

"cartoon" it up some? i draw in like a really cartoonish sharp and sorta anime-ish i know, i'm sorry style and this sorta clashes a bit with what i'm going for.

I think your "cartooning it up" is just cell shading. All the rules about planes, what's hit by light and shadow still exist just to a more narrow value range. It's difficult to find a tutorial for environments since all the cell shading stuff is on characters but all the same logic applies

>cell shading

not a thing that exist.

It should be fine. A lot of anime background art is like that, probably because characters can stick out.

Imagine the light coming in as an arrow pointing in 3d space. As you paint in each face, see what angle it is in relation to the arrow. If the arrow is pointing at it dead-on, it should be at full brightness. If it's pointing tangent to or behind the face, it should be in shadow. When it's tangent to it, it might look a bit odd to have it completely dark so it's okay to have the light "bend" around the edges a little.

well i'm getting that...now, but my issue is trying to do books on a shelf which are going to be an important part of the scene, but also they can't be too detailed, but also need SOME definition

Do a solid color and some fancy trimming.

It seems like tough work, but you luckily don't have to paint all of them in detail. Just detail the few ones that are close to your focal point or the area that you want your viewers to focus on.

So I scaled back after the ribcage catastrophe, this time around I decided to do plump subject to see how that would work since I've never done an overweight figure.

Boned in as normal, did her at "fit" proportions, then layered the additional weight over top to ensure the anatomy would fit.

Hair ticked me off though. For the life of me I can't make "shiny hair" work. :/

There will be the full (absurd) resolution on e621. Yes, bigger than 3250x2500.

There's something wrong with the shading on her pussy. Also, where's the rest of her shoulder?

For the shoulder, she's leaning/sitting on her right hand so the arm is being pulled down, which is why it's angled like that.

On the shading, maybe softening the light? I could also kill the tuft of hair - it's not shaded at all correctly, it would technically be flat dark with the frontish-above light source. Thoughts?

Thing is you're already wasting time with >>32413 you have so many unnecessary marks and and chickenscratched lines that the whole thing takes much longer than if you put some discipline on yourself and learned how to make clear decisions on the sketching form before you start to paint.

Can it be cleaned up and fixed? sure, and if thats your method youre happy with then fine but even the sculpters like approach can still get more efficient or clean results if you make bolder marks. the beginning sketch phase should have marks to inform you or remind you on your next step making it easier in the long run.

What should I focus on to get better at not having so much distortion on my drawings? They always tend to look pretty rough when flipped but they are easy to fix, I just figure that takes time and I wish I could see my art correctly from the get go.

It's fine since first passes always look rough. I just train by drawing or thinking on contrstruction. You can measure or use simplfied shapes beforehand. I trained my accuracy by drawing plates from the charles bargue manual.

Keep flipping your canvas to reset your eyes and help catch the distortion, but the method >>33653 talks about is very good too, excellent method for drawing from reference. its just a little weird to break everything into envelope shapes if youre drawing from imagination.

The bargue method is to strip it down into 2d shapes and get everything totally accurate before you start adding the shadows (which are just more 2d shapes)

We should bring back theme threads.

It feels like tracing.

Not at all. It's standard practice.

gotcha, that's good to know. Maybe I'll also do some free sculpts in Zbrush on the side so I don't get lazy.

who cares, furfags and even industry professionals use it all the time. You do what you gotta do to make art.

>is it bad to use character sheets when modeling like this?

No, but it's bad to model characters like THAT.

On an unrelated note, I wonder where ClosetAnon went. ClosetAnon, where are you?

>No, but it's bad to model characters like THAT.

care to expound? I can't find much on sculpting full bodies in blender so I'm trying to figure out a lot of this for myself.

>I can't find much on sculpting full bodies in blender

It's simple, really. You don't sculpt full bodies in blender. You don't sculpt at all in blender. You don't do very much in blender at all except maybe some hard surface modeling. You mentioned zbrush, use that instead. And as good practice, don't search things like "how to sculpt full bodies in blender". Search instead "how to sculpt in blender" to learn the commands (god forbid you actually do it for blender sculpting, out of all things) or "how to sculpt [thing]" to learn the technique. Applying the same technique to different software is what skill is all about except fucking blender, jesus.

Also, don't have all the reference views on one pic, moving the model around to match. Instead, keep the model centered at the world origin and cut the reference image into multiple images, loading them accordingly into separate views. Even better, load them onto image planes so you can even use a single view if you're short on screen space.

Also, I would model the purple glove separately from the body.

gotcha, the big thing I have blender for is the animation. I figured out there was a really nice method you could use in the program to emulate traditional animation with half the work (maybe less). Now the goal is just to git gud at modeling.

oh, and I forgot to say thanks for the advice. Switching to Zbrush for my modeling.

There's no point in doing the whole thing in blender if you're just interested about the rendering process.

Hell, you can do everything else elsewhere up to the animation and just plop the thing in blender to render it out.

Don't underestimate the rigging process either, it's a tough bitch.

Also, don't sculpt the base in perspective. Ortho only. You'll fuck up the volumes otherwise (and the ref images won't line up, either).

Just posting two things here. 1st pic was a CSP test and 2nd pic is supposed to be a pun based on Geese Howard.

I should try it again, I remember that I gave up on it easily after watching a tutorial.

Blender only shows the reference in ortho mode + cardinal directions.

That's nice, though you shouldn't really load image planes onto the background directly. Not anymore at least. Image planes are more flexible and more commonly used.

What really helped me was taking notes. I write down all the shortcuts and functions I find useful and if I don't remember them specifically when I'm working I just keep the notes up in a document on the side and quickly reference them.

I figured as much, though it's funny I've seen several tutorial videos arguing to only sculpt in perspective but it really doesn't give you a great representation of what you're getting.

Also, looks like I'm going to have to hold off on Zbrush. 700 dollars is a bit crazy for it. I did work in the trial quite a bit though and learned the work flow and besides the brush selection and lighting I'm having a hard time seeing the difference between it and Blender. Not trying to descredit Zbrush mind you, just that I haven't been able to find what makes it better.

>700 dollars is a bit crazy for it

I'm just going to drop in because the advice given here seems hostile.

First off, it's awesome that you're trying out closeups, comics, and difficult poses. It'll be a little wonky at first, but you're guaranteed to get better with them. It's way better than doing 3/4ths or frontal shots most of the time because you're training with all of your fundamentals. I went to do oekaki because I wanted to experiment more without having to worry about the end result, but what you're doing is better.

I don't think that anatomy is the issue as you know here your muscle placements are, but it wouldn't hurt to know more of it so that you can get freedom with body types.

You might be actually struggling with proportions, or how a body or head is evenly divided. You do have the head evenly divided into thirds, but the entire head seems to end at the hairline as opposed to the top of the head. What helped me the most with it were drawing the plates from the Gottfired Bammes book.

I don't think that quality matters whenever it comes to a comc anyway, it's speed and content.

I like this model a lot, especially the head and legs! Very saucy.

The butt looks nice from behind, but I think the tail should move back some. I understand what you were going for and I approve, but it looks unnatural for the tail to be too far ahead of the legs, especially at 3/4. He needs a defined crotch and a bit more thickness on the tail, imo.

Also it looks like the arms are pushing his torso in when at rest at his sides - but I assume you're still working on the weight paint.

Save old works and look back on them to see how far you've come. Seek feedback from others and strive to match one aspect of an artist's works that you admire.

I think you should make sure you're drawing regularly and maybe, to simply test the waters, ask some close friends to give you some requests and see if you can actually draw whatever shit other people want you to draw, to get you out of your comfort zone.

Make a routine out of making art. Study IRL stuff. Learn anatomy. Don't get stuck with one style that looks kinda good and don't get Same Face Syndrome. Draw stuff you want to draw, have fun with it.

I have this issue myself, but never quit on creating stuff. Even if you think that it will be bad. You have the potential to change it and it's better than having nothing at the end.

Besides, a lot of people who have your mentality turn out to be pretty good in the eyes of others. It's not so much about technical skill, but about passionate you are about executing your ideas.

I dunno why, but looking at my old stuff, regardless of how bad it is compared to how I am now always just makes me feel bad for some reason. As of right now, I don't really have anything in terms of old stuff I made. It's long gone.

I try to draw as much as I can, but that's kinda the reason why I was asking about motivation. I just can't keep myself drawing.

For the time being, this is the only thing I can find that I made, second attempt at shading anything and first attempt "painting" or w/e using nothing but colors/no grayscale

I ended up scrapping it back in march and idk if or where any backups are

gotta break that glucose into ATP

Just post in environments where you would be praised or encouraged to draw the stuff you like. Art is meant to be shown off after all.

I know what you're thinking, that it's bad to be in a "hugbox or safespace". However realistically, human beings always need to get something positive from the activities that they're doing. Be it a positive amount of money or something intangible like praise. Everyone hates losing the all money they won from gambling because they've wasted their time. I stopped doing a lot of requests because of it. What's the point of me doing a piece for >3 days with unlimited revisions if I find the process unenjoyable and if the requester doesn't like it? I would rather do studies and concepts that I legitimately dig.

I still make mistakes, but I don't let it prevent me from drawing anymore. I just vow to do better and push it aside as I know that I would get a few non-ideal days.

Has N8 been working out recently? He looks a little different...

His head is slightly smaller than his original design, but it's pretty normal for an anthro character. He was meant to be off-model anyway because I couldn't find ref at the time, so I used an old painting I did of him as a guideline.

Still pretty fun to do though.

>actually looking at your old art

>not storing it away in a folder inside a folder inside a folder, never to be seen by anyone ever again

Your rendering is pretty good, you mind want to add ambient occlusion (add black lines in the darkest areas) if you can. I'll post an example when I head back.

I really have a hard time sharing anything I make, I'm in a few groups, but I mostly discuss and such with them, don't really post my stuff in there. I get too nervous when I post. This probably sounds really stupid, but the last time I did post something in there months ago, I had to step away from the group for a bit because of anxiety.

Yea, i never even really got to highlights, hence why the eyes are so dull.

i should scour my computer to see if i can find and backups or something.

that's how I feel when I try to show people my drawings but I mostly chalk it up to a reluctance to admit that I have a while to go before my drawings look anything close to flawless

I think you're probably placing too much strain on yourself wondering what other people will think when the vast majority of them will probably just say "it's better than anything I could do" (unless you're talking about an art group, in which case I'd assume they'd try to be constructive instead of insulting)

What personally worked for me was that I stopped fixating on the flaws of others. I noticed that if you judge others negatively, then you have a fear of being judged the same way yourself, causing you become hesitant with displaying potential flaws.

It was just best for me to keep a humble and constructive attitude. I break it at times, but I try to remain that way.

I hardly fixate on the flaws of others unless they really tell me to. I fixate way too much on my own flaws and such.

I can't figure out what's off on something, I show a close friend a thing and they say it looks fine, and even though they say that and such, I get stuck playing a game of where's waldo with myself.

Very rarely I post to a art group, most of the time, it's to a small group of close friends. All the feedback is usually positive or constructive, but I still get embarrassed and anxiety filled showing others what I've made to the point that even when pressured, I usually back away before I even come close to considering posting.

My self-esteem is literally non-existant lol

Should have provided ref to show what I was talking about. The tail is connected to the cocynx part of the sacrum, which is a part of the pelvis. An animal pelvis connects in the same way.

Visually, it's meant to look at pic related 4 at the top right.

Thanks to you and the rest for your advice. I'm gonna keep fiddling with this one and see if I can make the image more clear with color and shading. If not, oh well. It was just meant to be a practice drawing anyway.

Can I get some critique for this?

Anatomy is shit, linework is shit, coloring is shit, shading is shit, character is shit. Back to basics with you.

The shading on the legs at least actually looks pretty okay though I think. Rest is questionable.

Looks like he's got a pillow strapped to his chest.

Both wings look rather funky as well.

I'm not entirely convinced there's a way to do the full-on arm-wings concept on an upright character without it looking stupid. The closest I've ever seen are characters who effectively just have arms with light webbing on them. I mean, how does he put his shirt on?

You should dump resources and an elaborate critique for that anon instead of writing a lazy response. It'll help you and that anon in the long run because you're prompted to think about your thought process.

Why are you throwing such a shitfit, shitfuck? Calling something "shit" isn't constructive criticism. You're probably just mad because you can't do better yourself and that fact hurts your ego.

Show some fucking respect or shut the fuck up.

Here, he should read OP and click "basic tips". >>28489

Seriously, it's not like any piece of drawing warrants an "elaborate critique", especially those like these, which would mean several lengthy posts of pointing out each major and minor flaw.

You can't expect someone to point out each spot where color goes outside the boundaries, each smear in the linework, each spot where the shading wasn't smoothed properly or that the toes weren't separated and are just yet another bunch of line smears. Those are just laziness on the artist's part.

Just like you can't point out each flaw in the anatomy when a simple "go back studying anatomy" suffices.

Rememeber the countless times the "practice, practice, practice" mantra was mentioned?

That's my critique.

Practice, practice, practice.

>You're probably just mad because you can't do better yourself and that fact hurts your ego.

Oh God, that's funny.

Some projection you got there.

<inb4 show something you made

I'm not obliged to account for anything with you.

>i can totally do better!

>spend 2 seconds uploading a picture? No fucking way! I dont have to prove anything to you shitlord!

>give useful criticism? Nah, that's too much work, I'll just call it something mean instead, criticizing things that aren't flawless takes too much brainpower

You refuse to give anything but vitriol as critique and you won't post any of your own work, yet you want me to believe you're better than that guy? Burden of proof is on you. By the way, even if you are more skillful (highly unlikely, because if you were you'd be able to at least give a few pointers seeing as you already have time to call it shit), everything you say does nothing but prove you are a giant doodoo head, so you should follow the thread rules and stop flaming or preferably, shut up.

don't even bother with the muh butthurt muh projection bullshit, i got nothing more to say to you.

I agree that it's good to practice, but it's not a good idea to do it without direction. You're likely to form wrong solutions when you're trying to solve an issue aimlessly.

You don't need several posts to state that he needs to utilize line weight and form while posting infographics that support your claim. With regards to lineart, lines are more thicker in the shadow more than they are in the light. If you can't break it down like I did in my previous sentences, then you don't know much. Maybe you do, which is why it's crucial to be constructive so that you and everyone else can parse that information easily.

I don't think I've ever claimed to be better than anybody here. That's something you made up. Even then, that's hardly relevant. Yet again, I don't have to prove anything. Not to you, not to anyone else.

And sorry, but when someone comes in with a generic "please give critique" and presents a supposedly finished piece without even bothering to clean up the linework nor not color outside the boundaries, that's just insulting. Don't even try convincing me that's something someone else has to point out for him to notice.

There is nothing more to say other than go back to the basics and keep practicing.

>but when someone comes in with a generic "please give critique" and presents a supposedly finished piece without even bothering to clean up the linework nor not color outside the boundaries, that's just insulting. Don't even try convincing me that's something someone else has to point out for him to notice.

He's clearly journeyman level, he probably doesn't know how to do those things yet, regardless, just talking shit about it isn't helpful, the whole point of asking for criticism is to get other people to notice flaws that you don't, imagine if everyone was an elitist like you who goes "bah, this shoddy art is too INDECENT to even acknowledge, furthermore a scalding is in order!", instead of being a prick, bestow your knowledge upon others, and if you can't do that, don't just say it's an unspecified type of "bad" you won't elaborate on.

It's kind of sad how you actually have valid criticisms to give it, like that with the unclean lineart, which means you could have pointed that out, but you instead consciously made the decision to react in this manner. Maybe you should've just directed him to the posts about lineweight in this thread and told him to try harder on drawing toes? Sure would be more helpful than concluding it's too shitty for you to pay any attention to, and do you actually feel legit insulted someone could post art you personally consider subpar?

>He's clearly journeyman level, he probably doesn't know how to do those things yet

Erasing chicken scratches is only a matter of picking the eraser and patience, not advanced knowledge, same as erasing color smeared outside the lines, same as smoothing muddy color strokes. Not doing chicken scratches in the first place is a matter of practice.

It's not insulting because it's subpar, it's insulting because it shows laziness on his part. Tell me why one should spend time critically analyzing the work of someone which shows he doesn't even have the patience to polish his work before presenting it. Why would he have the patience to improve it?

Have you considered the fact that it was a WIP or sketch? Not every piece you make has to be refined, you just have to draw consistently so that you can eventually create refined material off that bat. There's a reason why we do rough material like gesture drawings to improve our figures and speed paintings to improve our rendering.

Again, you're missing the overall point. Critique isn't meant to only help that anon, it's meant to help you and everyone else who potentially has that issue. You're doing a disservice by being arbitrarily agitated by those issues that you deem minor. In the long run, it's not going to help you because you're not breaking down those issues to avoid them.

Sketches don't get colored and shaded.

Sketches don't get critiques.

Because they're sketches.

Who's to say that a flaw is due to it being unfinished or an actual flaw the artist overlooked?

Therefore, critiquing sketches is an exercise in futility, unless the artist warns beforehand that they're aware of the imperfections that are due to it being still a work in progress which are gonna be fixed down the line. Even then, you can ask for specific advice, not a general critique. You're just asking to be shot down otherwise.

I don't recall this being the case, right?

Even if it was, sorry, but I don't have the ability to read minds over the internet, I work with what I'm dealt with.

>things that are obvious to me are obvious to other people, wtf is theory of mind

>there is only one way to draw

Cease posting.

>I work with what I'm dealt with

Dubs confirm its a qt but just looks like youre drawing very flat instead of working out the forms from drawing simple construction blobs.

I can tell what the pose is supposed to be but the biggest problem is that everything is kind of mushy with no real structure. Advice would be working on being able to draw forms that read as 3d first, then you can turn it into anything like a qt mouse. Also find some reference and try to deconstruct how it would look in simple 3d shapes.

lot better than most in the thread but i think your muddying up your values with too many diffferent shifts in shades, especially noticable on the face the shading is kind of all over the place. but the longer I look at it the more random the shading looks in general where it looks close but you can tell that something is off.

>muddying up your values with too many diffferent shifts in shades

It's the biggest issue I have. I know, but I have no idea how to solve it. I always end up having to maniacally paint gradients or be stuck with sharp value shifts all over the place.

Then I look at other work and see that it looks like they painted shadows/highlights/whatever with single fucking strokes yet they work. Of course they don't end up looking muddy, but fuck me how does that work.

Thanks, didn't really learn anything new but it's always good to refresh some basic concepts.

I think my biggest problem is not figuring out what to do, but how to do it.

>It's the biggest issue I have. I know, but I have no idea how to solve it.

>I always end up having to maniacally paint gradients or be stuck with sharp value shifts all over the place.

soft brushes, mixerbrush or smudge. if youre a photoshop user. texture will come later on. probably wasnt the best video i could find for it but I see your issue being the soft falloff of light.

I do use the smudge and soft brushes, but if I overdo the smudge, it looks fake as fuck. And it still doesn't really solve the problem of how some paint shit with few strokes and you don't even notice it unless you focus your attention specifically.

Plus, low opacity brushes tend to create those lovely unwanted areas where the strokes overlap and increase/decrease the values where you didn't intend them to. Still better than using 100% opaque brushes but damn if it isn't a pain fixing them. Because paint over and now you have two new areas you have to fix, repeat ad infinitum.

My issue is with technique, really. And I find most infographic/tutorials don't ever mention a shred of technique. Just "Start with this, then work to have this other thing. How? Figure it out yourself, lol."

>transparent overlaps

Paint 100% opacity on a new layer, then set the new layer's opacity.

Uh, isn't that basically the same thing? I don't get it.

You won't get overlaps this way, because the brush is already 100%.

Oh so you mean like working with a few gradients at 100% on different layers then mixing them together?

Hmm, sure, it may work, but still, I can't shake the feeling that it might be just a crutch, I've always seen artists paint values directly on a single layer.

thanks for your effort anon, I'll definitely try this out!

Alright I developed it a bit more. How's this?

Her arms and legs aren't casting any shadows on each other so it's hard to make out the form. Also her muzzle is off-center.

Please explain more. I don't understand.

File: e2779361d227f99⋯.png (180.59 KB, 600x600, 1:1, e5013f53ab4374e0c897f1891a….png)

You jumped to coloring too early, tbh you should have tried to fix areas up with redrawing them. It might have been more work but you would be happier with the end result and youd be improving faster, if you work on your mistakes. Clothing and detail goes over the form, so if your form is messed up the clothing will look like it too. You're too worried about the drawing looking clean rather than right, or having an interesting pose. il post some examples of how rough artists start with focusing on the idea first, execution later.

I don't know what areas to be fixed. Quoted post just said "things looked mushy" and I didn't know what that meant.

File: 62b614d1fa356d4⋯.jpg (Spoiler Image, 80.95 KB, 706x467, 706:467, serveimage(41).jpg)

I want to judge it right, but what style are you aiming for?

What do you mean?

File: 6c5abab1371685b⋯.png (6.23 KB, 175x142, 175:142, cba917ab0dde606ce2a50c4ddd….png)

This is all the same color except for a smudge on the shins. It's meaningless when you zoom in; there's no depth. You need to have shadows under the limbs because they're on top of each other.

put simply the anatomy is what needs to be fixed. try looking for ref with someone sitting in that pose and draw with it as a guide, then take mental notes on how different the real thing was vs trying to come up with it in your head.

How would I go about improving on it?

Aye aye.

Add shadows like you did with the hands.

ambient occlusion.

the biggest problem i see is lack of understanding drawing perspective, the arms for instance would be foreshortened in this pose wrapped around the legs but because the perspective you drew is wrong it just looks crushed in length on the upper arms, and abnormally long on the lower parts of the arms. this has a flattening out effect, and the legs are also doing a similar flattening.

What's that?

Got an example?

just check the art document in the OP, its what it was made for. lots and lots of advice for all sorts.

Architect of the /fur/ artdoc here.

Because the BO here is cancer who reverted back to his controlling tendencies, I can't support this board anymore and so I'm closing access to the megaguide link in the OP.

I've created various /fur/ oc for close to a year, but I wont be making any more. I stopped drawing Bill because it's a dishonest representation as a mascot and im an honest guy, Bill Katt is chill and Kemo is playful but this board is anything but that, so it's not appropriate. If I draw them again, it will be disassociated from /fur/ since I basically created them both... before I saw the ugly underbelly of the board. Like the other anon who created f8th and k8 who left for greener pastures, so too do I.

Having spent nearly a year watching the board from the inside, I can say its just pent up pretentious assholes. So the board can have the Bushy and n8 leftovers instead. I would be doing a new full painting for the ArtThreads OPs and celebrations like when I did the Christmas and New Years, but i wont be doing any of that anymore either.

Because there's nothing here to worth celebrating, not the anniversary and not the merger, theres just a constant repulsive elitist circlejerking attitude about /fur/ while everyone who put the board on the map is bitter and outcasted. I wanted this board to succeed but this board was a huge failure that was handed the front page and about a hundred users it didnt earn, used them and then discarded all of them for its own suffocating pursuit, effectively killing all the board activity and it's only in a comatose state now. It has a clean exterior with a festering interior, and the elitism of /fur/ vs /furry/ of treating /furry/ users as second class citizens with no rights? It never stopped and goes all the way to the top, the active mods hate /furry/ users and would rather hemorrhage user activity and burn everyone than find some common ground because they have an undeserved monopoly on a furry board for the front page. I used to be one of them but I wash my hands of it now.

No one's improved here since the ArtThreads began so I guess that was a failure too, but a good try. This is my last post in any of the art related threads. I did For anons looking for advice in a long while, potentially for good. To the anon from Art2.0 who hoped the threads would never change, and continue to have the best feedback you could find? Sorry that's probably over now, and this thread will just stagnate like the rest of the board. I had many more things to share but it looks like having bootlickers is more important than honesty, supporting reasons to come back to the board, and generating actual interest for new users.

Seeya, and good luck with your art adventures anons,

Except you Bell, you're a lazy halfassed artist who never finishes anything so you'll always suck.

File: f3616ee902ffd16⋯.png (126.35 KB, 500x500, 1:1, f3616ee902ffd16f75312d3fa5….png)

kek thanks for the last laugh anon

>Like the other anon who created f8th and k8 who left for greener pastures, so too do I.

I'd sure like to know where these greener pastures supposedly are, because all I know about are barren wastelands.

File: 824c23fae745c23⋯.jpg (134.08 KB, 700x900, 7:9, IMG_0615.JPG)

IIRC F8th anon is on /kemono/ now.

boy do we love drama

I think you're unfairly hard on Bell. The purpose of those generals weren't to be controlling, but to increase board activity as we have a low userbase. I also don't see the elitism aimed at /furry/ users, I've only seen comments aimed about Puppysky by a single user for not protecting the board.

I'm willing to admit that I'm abrasive myself and I need to cool down. If going to different places makes you feel better, then I don't oppose you for it, but we'll still try to continue on.

It's obvious you're upset with the BO and the direction the board is heading, but that does not excuse you from derailing the art thread with drama. If you're going to vent then do it in the meta thread or go to greener pastures like you said you would.

Something about her hand makes her tit look like it's sticking way out. Looks good otherwise, once you fix the face.

Her right wrist is incredibly thin and she has virtually no torso. Also, what's with her hair going down between her eyes?

posting a trade

Can we start up the theme threads again?

i don't know how long it's been since you visited /fur/ but there are a total of zero active artists here right now. once a week, one random guy will appear and draw a single image or a handful of images and then disappear completely forever. any thread with an art focus goes down to page 7 and then get a "bump" reply from a retard that hasn't got the memo yet that there's no artists here and then it'll die or continue getting bumped with no content.

File: 88fc94e85bbd9e4⋯.png (228.09 KB, 920x690, 4:3, robotanuki.png)

Artists still hang around here. I've been here and at /furry/ since early 2016. The issue lies in the fact that this place doesn't facilitate art at all. Here are the sources of inspiration:

<Board tans, of which only N8 K8 and F8h are even halfways decent

<Request thread, where you get to pick between Nickelodeon show requests or drawing someone's Animal Jam fursona

<CYOA threads which never end well

<Or anonymous hate or parody art which isn't even allowed here since anything slightly political gets shut down by Bell.

No new banners, this board still doesn't have a fucking spoiler image even for fucks sake. I save my art for Furaffinity and Inkbunny where I can make money and actually draw with purpose. I do request sketches here for warmups or the rare chance I see something interesting, but every day I am here shows me this is a place for shitposting, not art. And I prefer it that way, if people start waving their art dicks around then we just have a big circle jerk like FA where peoples opinions are judged by their body of work instead of their own merits. Salos (you) is a perfect example of, for instance, how Kayla Na or Jigglebones would be treated if they were forced to talk with just their shitty autistic opinions. And I prefer that. Its okay if a place isn't for art. I am more than happy to draw things for this board when I get the urge but I won't force drawings in with a crowbar just to give this place more art.

Rant over. Here is a request someone gave me on telegram so I am contributing. He has joints and shoulder pads because he's made from wood and is a synthetic tanuki golem made to help a rice farmer in ancient Japan. Just one of many requests that are way too cool to be seen anywhere near this board's request thread.

I'm mildly interested of doing that again.

I'm using a decent Thinkpad with Krita to take to drawing with, but using the mouse is so unintuitive. I'm looking to get a Wacom medium sized tablet, but I wonder if I should just stick to the mouse and just get a hold of the basics first instead.

nah, you'll need a wacom tablet or something with a screen and pressure sensitivity. If not you're better off getting the basics down on pencil and paper. Make sure to read your loomis.

funny thing is I think we're making her way more vanilla than she was intended to be. She comes across as a bit of a slutty bitch in her official art, but I like stern woman with a heart of gold better.

evidently no one wants to draw anything anyone has requested

The couple of artists we have just don't seem to be drawn to it. You can get a perspective here from one of the artists: >>46990 who honestly is the only artist ITT I've ever seen do requests. Other than the milfy cheetah guy I guess.

Why is autosage on this board 450 instead of 500?

Cunnilingus is best sex. Peenus to vagina is only second best.
