 No.1617463

Hello /tv/, i've watched a lot of martial arts action films (well pretty much all of them, actually) so i'm here to share what I think are the 50 best martial arts fight scenes in movies. I'll be starting at 50 and will countdown to #1, doing about 5 every day. Some films you'll inevitably know, but hopefully you'll learn about some of the rarer ones. You'll also be happy to know no Jew-produced film made the cut. If this doesn't get any interest then i'll just start a blog instead or something.

#50 - Leung Kar-yan vs. Eddy Ko

What happens when you’ve finally pushed a man past his limits and he loses all control? A spot of the old ultraviolence of course. Leung Kar-Yan destroys this man’s body while spitting and frothing at the mouth like a lunatic.

 No.1617478

You faggot, you stole my idea. I was just about to make this thread, except my countdown was going to be about interracial romances instead of fight scenes.

#49 - Dragon Family (1988)

A unique entry on this list, this film wasn’t quite sure what kind of action film it wanted to be – so it mixed frantic gun action with martial arts to sublime effect.

 No.1617500

#48 - Eastern Condors (1986)

Here’s a film that suddenly transforms from a mediocre war flick into a fantastic display of the talents of some of Hong Kong’s best on-screen martial artists at the time. Watch out for the two henchmen that would later go on to star in Jet Li’s excellent portrayal of Chen Zhen.

 No.1617515

Kino thread, will watch these when I get home.

#47 - Shaolin Drunkard (1983)

They sure don’t make films like this anymore. Hong Kong films have lost their humorous and laid-back style in recent years thanks to the Red Menace. This fight features a lot of creativity and some scintillatingly sharp choreography. Woo-Ping Yuen made a bunch of these flicks in the early 80’s, but this is probably the best of the lot.

#46 - Mahjong Dragon (1997)

A deadpan comedy is a strange place to find one of the best fights in cinema history, but that’s what we have here. The film itself is pretty shit thanks to the main character who has the emotional range of a wet paper bag, but he can fight well, which is all we care about. And yes that’s Ken Lo, from THAT Jackie Chan fight.

Your thread is trash normal faggot.

The time where you could say anything you want is over. Even the far corners that used to protect the idea gave in. The internet is for normal fags. Even the most obscure places are for normal fags now. If you go and create something new, then within a year it will be for normal fags if you let anyone know. Thanks to geniuses making it easy for the brain dead masses to "have a say" and " be included" in everything it all has been ruined. That time you experienced over a decade ago was the last remnants of the wild wild digital west……

Hello Anons, how are you enjoying this most holy of days? Here's the next 5:-

#45 - Legendary Weapons of China (1982)

A film based around the real-life phenomenon of Chinese martial artists thinking they could train their bodies to resist Western bullets, with predictable results. The last fight in this film has all 18 traditional Chinese weapons in action in the best display ever seen on the silver screen.

#44 - Paradox (2017)

The most recent film on our list, and the first appearance of Tony Jaa. The creators of this film in their infinite wisdom decided it prudent to kill off the only actor with martial arts skills halfway through the film, and thus our best fight appears at the halfway point.

#43 - Skinny Tiger Fatty Dragon (1990)

#42 - New Police Story (2004)

Jackie Chan was 50 by the time this film came around, and it was starting to show. This is probably the last time you’ll see him strut his stuff effortlessly in a truly great fight scene. I didn’t care much for the story though. They should have made the antagonists hapas and it would have been more believable.

#41 - The Invincible Armour (1977)

You just know the fucker means business when his hair has gone white. Hwang Jang Lee has trained his body so extensively that it is now completely invulnerable. And not only that, he can suck his meat and two veg up into his body at will. Rumour has it he only has one fatal weak point, I wonder where it could be?

#40 - Fist of Fury (1972)

This actor and this movie certainly need no introduction. Bruce remains the fastest guy ever on screen and spawned an entire genre of complete shite after his death with copycats trying and failing to recreate his magic. This is him effortlessly taking on an entire dojo at once.

#38 - Thunderbolt (1995)

This fight scene makes exemplary use of the environment as a pachinko parlour gets absolutely trashed. Fighting in-between pachinko machines, on top of pachinko machines, bouncing off pachinko machines… and in typical pachinko fashion, it all ends with pachinko balls. Lots of pachinko balls.. And there’s that guy who can’t keep his leg out of the air again.

 No.1620602

#37 - Fearless Dragons (1980)

I’ve never heard of dragon or horse styles of kung fu before, but they’re creatively combined here to establish one of the best ‘2 v 1’ fight scenes in history. Wang Lung-Wei was a villain in every single film he featured in, which is probably because his expression never changes.

 No.1620609

Dailymotion embed. Click thumbnail to play.

#36 - She Shoots Straight (1990)

Ah yes, the first ‘girls with guns’ film, an extremely popular subgenre in the late 80’s/early 90’s. Agnes Aurelio buffed up for this scene, and on another film shot around the same time (with slightly inferior action), one character calls her a tranny straight to her face. This is another really good film from start to finish.

I'll have to ask politely HKbro, but i thought 1987's Iron Angels (天使行動) was one of the famous "waifus with raifus" movies, and that's at least 2 years before

Also i didn't expect Thunderbolt to appear here, i thought Fist of Legend (Fist of Fury remake by Thunderbolt's director) was going to be his representative, even when i was more impressed by the former.

Oh how I love these China vs. Japan films, they really bring out the best hate in people. The sheer loathing in Leung Kar-Yan’s eyes is palpable. It’s too bad Japan doesn’t make any China-hate kino. This film also has one of the funniest English dubs ever so make sure to watch it in that format.

A theatre is an apt location for this fight scene as it has great staging. Our villain is a psychopath who wears a mask and can stretch his arms like Dhalsim, which is a gimmick that works really well. One of Yuen Woo-Ping’s best films.

Hong Kong choreography had become so proficient by the 80’s that even white women could pass as competent on-screen fighters. Loads of energy in what is probably the best ‘girls with guns’ film and of course choreography that’s light years ahead of Hollyweird.

Legend has it if you train in the martial arts non-stop from a very young age until you’ve achieved grandmaster status then your hair will turn white, your voice will turn girly and your dick will recede back into your groin. At least that’s the premise of this film. Classic martial arts kino.

This is a film that is otherwise completely unremarkable, featuring actresses who thankfully never worked again, until the action suddenly gets turned to eleven in the culminating Act. Ron Smoorenburg, a man better known as gang member #5, or thug #3, shows off his best legwork, and boy is it impressive.

#24 - The Magnificent Ruffians (1979)

Now if this was a list comprising the best martial arts films many more Venoms outings and Chang Cheh kino would feature. As it’s just a list of best fights however, there’s one fight in particular that’s head and shoulders above the rest. Lu Feng is a weapons expert from Taiwan and he shows off his consummate skills with the golden sword.

#23 - Two Toothless Tigers (1980)

An extremely rare film, most of the few copies that are still around are missing film stock or have extreme print damage due to the Hong Kong tradition of leaving film reel in damp basements to waste away. Which is a huge shame as this is one of the best examples of the genre. I’d be very impressed if you’ve seen this before. (that nut kick tho)

Kim Won-Jun is yet another one who tears up the screen. He disappeared shortly afterwards (rumours say he got AIDS) so this is the only movie you’ll get to see him strut his stuff in. Jean Claude who?

Kuan Te-Hsing proves the pen is indeed mightier than the sword in another perfectly choreographed fight scene from the Yuen clan. It’s always impressive watching a man in his 70’s show off his skill.

#17 - Gorgeous (1999)

Known as the only white bloke to ever make it into Jackie Chan’s renowned stunt team, this manlet (well, by white standards) puts Jackie to shame with his speed and technique, and you’re never quite convinced that he can be beaten (Hwang Jang Lee also had the same ‘problem’). These two great fights arbitrarily take place in an awful romcom that was clearly made-up on the spot by the director as he went along. Jackie probably only agreed to be in this so he could sleep with the actress half his age.

This has to be the best ever location for an end fight – a building rooftop with Kai Tek airport’s runway in the background. Oh how I wish I could have been in one of those L-1011’s. Now watch a very youthful Donnie Yen fight a big angry nigger twice his size.

#10 - Police Story (1985)

A film that marks a huge step-up in production values for Jackie thanks to Mitsubishi product placements all over the film, as well as everything else that came afterwards for the next 15 years. This fight scene is impressive for one main reason: the stuntmen. Bugmen are dropping like flies risking life and limb smashing their heads through glass, breaking their backs off escalators and being thrown off high floors, all in the name of entertainment kino. Honestly the funniest part of this movie is the credits scene showing the stuntmen being rushed off to hospital with various fractures. It’s one of the main reasons films like this can never be made in Hollywood.

One famous face who has been noticeably absent from this list is a certain Jet Li. #5 - Ong Bak (2003)

After the Hong Kong industry increasingly turned towards pop stars and CGI, and lost sight of what made these films made great, Ong Bak and Tony Jaa took us back to the basics. Originally a dancer, Tony is 100% convincing as a Muay Thai expert with sublime technique and speed. Emphatically heralding the complete absence of wirework or stunt-doubles, Ong Bak returned to what has proven to work best – stuntmen getting the absolute shit kicked out of them. There are certainly no pesky labour laws in Thailand holding back entertainment. Unfortunately, Tony only gave us 3 great movies (each one slightly inferior to the last) before apparently going nuts and becoming a monk. Once he got his marbles back and started appearing in films again, his agility and flexibility had noticeably faded. Give me the steroids.. ALL THE STEROIDS!

I found an interesting analysis of the fight the other day. This guy doesn't pronounce the show's or character's names correctly, but he points out that the fight is "shot" in one of two ways:

1. From the perspective of an imaginary person watching from ground level.

2. From Asuka's perspective (as >>1641509 pointed out) so we can empathize with Asuka's struggle.

Maybe the fight is shot so close because Anno wanted to convey the scale of the fight, as well as Asuka's hyper-focus induced "tunnel vision" while she fights the Eva Series.

Mitsuo Iso (the animator) also conveys the scale of the fight with how the momentum of the blades (and Asuka's hair/body >>1630858 >>1630862 ) is shown, as well as the environmental destruction.

Never before has extreme real-life hatred being channelled as successfully into movies as it has in Chinese films containing the Japs, and you’ll notice there’s several films in this list with this backstory. The Ip Man films take more and more liberties with the truth as they go along and eventually became Chinese Nationalist nonsense (ironic because Ip Man himself fled from the Commies), but this first entry remains the best by far. Donnie Yen is a tryhard if there ever was one–he's the Chinese equivalent of Stephen Seagal. This scene is full of shitty jump cuts and you can hardly tell what the fuck is going on. Why are you trolling us, OP?

And finally, after a momentous 3 week journey we've finally arrived at our number one martial arts fight scene…

DRUM ROLL PLEASE…

….

….

1. The Young Master (1980)

And here it is, Anons. The culmination of our efforts and the one you’ve all been waiting for. One Korean in particular stands head and shoulders above the rest as the greatest fighter ever to appear on our screens. He only appeared in a few films and this was by far his best fight scene, a 20-minute fight where Jackie gets the absolute shit beaten out of him time and time again. Jackie starred and directed this one, and this is the movie where he firmly established himself as a master thespian in my humble opinion. Not having any formal martial arts training himself, Jackie’s true skill lied in allowing the people fighting him to convincingly show off their skills as he gets beaten to a pulp. This fight scene took 3 months to film in total!

And that's our Top 50 countdown of martial arts kino! Have a drink on me, Anons, you deserve it. Honourable mentions in numbers 51-100 to follow. Maybe we'll even have Bloodsport at #100 to trigger the JCVD fanboy!

It's says this but, #14 >>1631643 still says the same! While being posted 11 days ago! How long does dailymotion take too "publish" a video?

What was the purpose of that ground drawing? Was he planing too do a Naruto-style summoning jitsu? lol

 No.1652838

Is there any videos of real martial artists trying too kill each other? There's only films or tournaments, I'll settle for any real melee fight between too professionals. No Worldstar-tier shit.

You did your top 50 fight scenes (with some obvious troll pics near the top), but you didn't actually do the top full martial arts kino. What are the best martial arts films as compete movies?

TOP 50 MARTIAL ARTS ENDINGS

The list would be fairly similar with the omission of films that only get good right at the end. Also much more Shaw Bros. Maybe a list for the future.

How does that work?

>>1652449

I think the video on >>1632218 is right. Jackie's films are exceptional because he conveys how hurt he is getting as the fight carry's on. His comedic style adds variety and entertainment too the fights that would only be kicks and punches otherwise.

How is this a hint?

This may be slightly off topic but, how would you anons film the Sanguinius vs. Horus battle from Warhammer 30K? Remember they are super-fast super-humans.
