Not the best, but could be worse. I did a bit above average on my math exam, and the physics one I had last night was a bit rough, which is normal. I don't think I will ever understand the obsession with examinations in academics but I can't change the system unfortunately.

I'm doing alright, enjoying a lazy Friday afternoon. "Not the best, not the worst" is my usual exam performance, I hope things go well for your next batch. As for the exam obsession, I can't think of another efficient way of assessing a large number of students in one go.
No.37304
>>37302
That's something that's always bothered me too. I've always been good at taking tests, but not everyone is. It's a skill totally unrelated to the subject matter you're being tested on, yet is critical in order to pass it. It's an unfair advantage for people like me who don't get flustered and can test well and an unfair disadvantage for people smarter than me but not as good at actually taking tests.

No.37306

I guess there is some efficiency in them, but they don't really asses students that well from what I can tell. I've done well on exams where I didn't even understand the material well, I've seen smart students do poorly, and all sorts of silliness. The format is is just so artificial too, especially when any real world work in my field is highly collaborative. If you need help you just ask others or look up some resource, you're not screwed forever. I guess I'm just bitter after so long, even when I do well on exams it is never that satisfying to me.
>>37304
People do have strengths in different areas too, but we are all supposed to preform at the same things for whatever reason. This is another thing that bothers me, and I usually do fine on exams.

Yeah, it's actually so ridiculous how tests are something that you either pass or fail the first time and there's no second chances. In real life, if you have a problem, you keep working at it until you overcome it. You don't usually just get one shot and that's it forever.

Absolutely. In research you make hundreds of mistakes every day. Everyone screws things up. You just keep going until you get it right though, you aren't stuck with your initial mistakes forever. If I ever become a professor I hope I can avoid the usual exam format.

I'd rather become a full time research scientist, but being a professor has some advantages. I'm not sure how well I could deal with all the annoying parts of academia, even on the other side though. We will see. I did have an astronomy class last semester that had no exams. It was all based on projects. It was hard as hell but we learned how to do work we might actually have to do someday in our future careers. I really liked that format.

Also, speaking of books and growing up. There is a quote from "The ocean at the end of the lane" that I really like.
>…‘I’m going to tell you something important. Grown-ups don’t look like grown-ups on the inside either. Outside, they’re big and thoughtless and they always know what they’re doing. Inside, they look just like they always have. Like they did when they were your age. The truth is, there aren’t any grown-ups. Not one, in the whole wide world.’

Of course it isn't that simple, the uni seems to have made an error and put a bunch of us on a module we don't meet the criteria to study. I'm not happy with having to sort that out, it's gonna eat into time I could spend studying. Other than that, I'm good.

As an offhand remark, the dude replied telling me I need to note there's a prerequisite module to study - which I had not known about before, and which none of us had studied before. I'm hoping this is just a clueless admin who doesn't know any better, and not a major fuckup. I don't have time to play catchup in some other module.
