As Maria stepped through the door of her new apartment in Italy with her fiancé, she believed she was crossing into an exciting new life that her Romanian village could never provide.

But after putting down her suitcase, she was presented with a bill for every gift, restaurant dinner and holiday bought during their courtship and told to settle the debt through prostitution.

The donated kidney, held in a special cooler, was flown via a custom drone with eight rotors from a location in West Baltimore a few miles to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). There, it was implanted in a 44-year-old woman who had spent the previous eight years on dialysis.

"This whole thing is amazing," the patient, who did not disclose her name, said in a statement. "Years ago, this was not something that you would think about."

The village church in Saint-Gilles is not a thing of great beauty. It was converted in the mid-19th century from a storehouse and vat rooms that had belonged to a local winery, and it feels like it. A priest comes to celebrate Mass only four times a year and the building serves mainly as an officially recognized refuge for bats.

A former Government child safety adviser has raised concerns over a new Facebook feature which will see strangers being introduced to one another.

Professor Sonia Livingstone said the company’s ‘Meet New Friends’ tab could create “all kinds of new risks” by recommending users befriend people based on criteria such as the school they attend.

>Scientists used protein fragments from jawbone to match it to a Neanderthal relative

The new discovery was made roughly 2,300 kilometres to the southeast in Gansu province of China. The right half of a jawbone with teeth is at least 160,000 years old, scientists reported Wednesday in the journal Nature. No DNA could be found, but scientists recovered protein fragments that they compared to the Siberian DNA. That showed the fossil came from a Denisovan.

The find addresses several mysteries. One was why the Siberian DNA indicated Denisovans were adapted to living at high altitudes when the Siberian cave is relatively close to sea level. The Chinese cave, by contrast, is on the high-altitude Tibetan Plateau, about 3,280 meters

Massive footsteps found in the Himalayas appear to belong to a yeti, the Indian army claimed Monday.

NBC News reported that the 32-inch-long footsteps in the snow were found near the base camp of Mount Makalu, the world's fifth-highest mountain, on April 9. The photographs were taken by the Indian army's mountaineering team and were passed on to "the scientific community" to be verified, a representative for the defense ministry said Tuesday.

Indiana Health Commissioner Kris Box has issued a statewide standing order that adults don't need to see a health care provider for a prescription for the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine and can obtain it from any pharmacy that carries it.

The order Tuesday comes as measles has sickened more than 700 people in 22 states this year, including one person in Indiana.

After about seven hours of angry, sometimes deeply painful debate about race and gun violence that spanned two days, the Florida House passed a bill Wednesday that would allow classroom teachers to be armed, expanding a program lawmakers created last year after the Parkland shooting.

The debate reached emotional heights that had Democrats shouting or tearing up as black lawmakers delved into details about their personal experiences with racism and their deep-seated fears about minority children being targeted by teachers who have guns.

Texas state legislators are taking fresh aim at energy drinks, soda and candy. Rep. Briscoe Cain, a Republican who represents Baytown in the Houston area, filed a bill last month in the House Committee for Human Services that would bar people from using food stamps to pay for energy drinks, candy and other junk foods.

The Texas bill aims to curb the spread of diabetes and other health problems linked to poor diet.

Twenty-six people died of Ebola in a single day in the Democratic Republic of Congo's North Kivu province, the highest daily toll since its outbreak nearly nine months ago, the health ministry said Tuesday.

The current outbreak is the second deadliest on record, after the epidemic that struck West Africa in 2014-2016 and killed more than 11,300 people.

The health ministry it had counted 957 deaths in the country, of which 891 were confirmed cases and 66 suspected ones.

"There were 26 deaths from confirmed cases" on Sunday, April 28, in the northeastern North Kivu province, the ministry said in a statement.

The smoking eventually did him in.

An Oregon man was arrested Sunday in connection to a cold case rape and murder of a Washington woman 25 years ago after DNA from a tossed cigarette butt led authorities to him, according to officials.

The Vancouver Police Department said that Richard E. Knapp, 57, was arrested during a traffic stop and booked into the Multnomah County Jail before he was extradited to Clark County, Wash. on a charge of murder in the first degree.

Knapp is suspected of killing Audrey Hoellein (Frasier) on July 17, 1994. Hoellein, who was only 26 at the time of her murder, was separated from her husband and the mother of a young boy.

Apple's Wearables, Home, and Accessories business has enjoyed a rather impressive second quarter of 2019, generating a record-breaking $5.1 billion for the company.

The strong results were announced on the company's earnings call, however it was against the backdrop of an overall decline in revenue - Apple reported an overall income of $58 billion this year, a decline of from the $61 billion of last year.

The smartphone industry is in rough shape. Sundar Pichai used the word “headwinds” to discuss the company’s difficulties moving Pixel 3 units, but Canalys’ latest report is far more blunt, describing the situation as a “freefall.”

Things are pretty ugly in the Q1 report, as smartphone shipments declined for the sixth quarter in a row. The combined global units hit 313.9 million, marking their lowest point in almost half a decade, according to the firm.

Of the big players, Apple seems to be particularly hard hit, falling 23.2% year on year. Once again, China played a big role here, but as usual, the full story is much more complex.

Fox Entertainment’s Opens a New Window. hit TV show 'Empire' will be back for a 6th season, without Jussie Smollett's character. Although there are currently no plans to bring hime back, the studio decided to extend his contract. Singer Joy Villa said Smollett has “privilege written all over him.”

“He should have completely been written off,” she told FOX Business’ Maria Bartiromo Opens a New Window. . “He should be blacklisted from the entertainment industry.”

In March, Smollett had all charges dropped in connection with his alleged hate-crime hoax, but in Villa’s opinion, Smollett deserves “some kind of punishment,” adding that the 16 hours of community services he performed is “nothing.”

“He didn’t even get a slap on the wrist, he got a feather tap over the wrist.”
