US scientists who studied the performance of myriad athletes – including adventurous souls who spent 5 long months running across the United States – have come up with an estimate of the absolute physiological boundary of human endurance.

The conclusions are pretty technical but the study published Wednesday, June 5, in the journal Science Advances highlights one feature in particular that makes people unique among primates: their physical endurance is indeed extraordinary.

It is probably something we inherited from hunter-gatherers over the course of two million years, the researchers say. In a nutshell, when it comes to pushing one's body to the limit, humans run circles around monkeys.

The limit to human endurance is measured in multiples of something called basal metabolism, which is the minimum energy, counted in calories, that is expended by the body to keep itself going for one minute.

And the limit to human endurance is about 2.5 times this basal metabolism, says the team, led by Herman Pontzer, a professor of evolutionary anthropology at Duke University.

 No.238662[Reply]

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg suggested Friday that there will be sharp divisions among her colleagues as they finish their term, with decisions in high-profile cases about the census and the drawing of electoral maps expected before the end of the month.

The justice was speaking at a conference for judges in New York. According to prepared remarks made available by the Supreme Court, the justice noted that of the 43 cases the justices have announced decisions in since hearing arguments beginning in October, just over a quarter were decided by a 5-4 or 5-3 vote. Those are rulings that tend to split the court’s five more conservative justices from its four liberal members including Ginsburg.

“Given the number of most watched cases still unannounced, I cannot predict that the relatively low sharp divisions ratio will hold,” said Ginsburg, who knows the votes in the some two dozen cases remaining at this point, though the public does not. The court’s term runs from October through June.

In her remarks, Ginsburg drew a parallel between two cases involving the Trump administration: this year’s case involving the census and a case last year in which the court’s conservatives upheld President Donald Trump’s ban on travel from several mostly Muslim countries over the dissent of their liberal colleagues.

On Thursday, Juan Guaido woke up and doused himself with a bucket of water.

It was his shower. Like millions of Venezuelans, the man who dozens of countries recognize as the legitimate leader of his broken country can’t rely on the taps to run. “It’s one of the things I hate most,” the 35-year-old lawmaker said in an interview. “It’s a symbol of poverty, and during much of my life I had to do it.”

And yet, he was for the most part characteristically upbeat, exuding that can-do spirit that his followers love and his detractors find naive, as he talked about how Venezuela would have to tolerate much more suffering in order to topple Nicolas Maduro’s autocratic regime. Despite the pain, he said, the U.S. shouldn’t ease up on the sanctions that are deepening the worst economic crisis in the country’s history.

“It’s going to get worse” before things turn, he warned.

Ultimately, he insisted, the opposition movement, rekindled after he became leader of the National Assembly in January, would succeed. New elections could be held in six or nine months because the pressure simply won’t let up on Maduro’s closest collaborators to break ranks, he said.

Not so long ago, most people in the West thought the world would end on Judgement Day after the dead rose from their graves and joined Jesus on a journey into heaven.

Now, of course, that seems unlikely because we are absolutely sure doomsday will come when climate change melts the ice caps and rising seas swallow our civilization.

And if that doesn’t happen, a killer computer will wipe us off the planet – as long as we manage to survive the inevitable nuclear war, alien invasion or global pandemic.

Of course, we don’t know whether any of these disasters will come to pass because we’re not much closer to accurately predicting the end of all things than we were in the days when early Christians penned the apocalyptic Book of Revelation.

Michael Gove last night admitted taking cocaine on ‘several social occasions’.

The Tory leadership candidate said he used the banned substance when he was younger and deeply regrets it.

He told the Daily Mail: ‘I took drugs on several occasions at social events more than 20 years ago. At the time I was a young journalist. It was a mistake. I look back and I think, I wish I hadn’t done that.’

Mr Gove, 51, insisted his past mistakes should not be held against him as he battles to replace Theresa May as prime minister. She stepped down as Tory leader yesterday.

With the popularity ratings of Angela Merkel's favoured successor plunging and the centre-left SPD in disarray, speculation is growing that Germany's next chancellor might hail from the Greens.

The environmental group recorded rocketing support in European elections in late May, boosted by the youth-led Fridays for Futures school strikes urging action against global warming.

With an all-time high 20.5 percent of votes in Germany, the Greens overtook Merkel's junior coalition partner, the Social Democratic Party, coming in second place in the May 26 EU vote.

Since then, several surveys have put it neck and neck with Merkel's centre-right CDU-CSU alliance, with one even giving it a one percentage point lead for the first time.

With the numbers suggesting that Germany's highest office may be within reach for the Greens, the buzz is not whether the party could fill the seat at the chancellery but which of its two co-chiefs – Annalena Baerbock or Robert Habeck – could seize the top job.

The Democratic presidential contenders are descending in force on Iowa this weekend to persuade voters and party activists that they have the message and organization to win the first-in-the-nation nominating contest.

As campaigning accelerates leading up to the first debates later this month, 19 of the 23 Democrats actively running to challenge President Donald Trump will be in the state, the biggest assembly of 2020 candidates to date.

The marquee event is the Iowa Democratic Party Hall of Fame dinner on Sunday, where they’ll be making five-minute pitches to influential local party officials. Missing from the group is Joe Biden, the current front-runner who is waiting until Tuesday to campaign in Iowa.

Nasa will allow tourists to live inside the International Space Station.

The space agency plans to open the floating lab up to private astronauts as well as commercial companies, it said. That could include film crews, for instance, who could be allowed to make ads or whole films in space.

The first space tourists could head up to the ISS in 2020, Nasa said.

The plans allow private companies to lease out time on Nasa's part of the International Space Station. They will also be able to borrow its own astronauts for their commercial work, and take their technologies to the floating lab – though they are expected to pay heavy prices for the opportunity.

A new line of grooming products called Xbox Lynx embodies a fragrance that some might rather avoid than apply: that of a gamer.

The collaboration between Xbox and Axe body spray parent companies Microsoft and Unilever, respectively, won’t flaunt the pheromones of a sweaty, unwashed video game addict. Nope, this scent features “top notes of kaffir lime and winter lemon, aromatic herbal middle notes of mint and sage, and woody bottom notes of patchouli and clearwood,”

At least 52 people were shot across Chicago over the weekend, the most violent of the year as summer gets underway, with a toll even higher than during the long Memorial Day holiday just a week earlier.

More than half the victims were wounded during a 12-hour burst of gunfire from Friday evening to Saturday morning. At least four of the 31 people shot during that time died after attacks on the West and South sides. By the time the weekend ended, at least 10 people were dead, according to the Chicago Police Department.

The level of violence, which typically spikes during the summer months, eclipsed that of the three-day Memorial Day weekend when at least 43 people were shot, seven of them fatally. Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson held a news conference Monday morning, calling the level of violence “despicable.”

In a statement Sunday night, the department’s chief spokesman said Johnson ordered “targeted patrols” in areas of potential retaliation by gangs. “Those efforts have resulted in 19 arrests on gun-related charges and 81 illegal weapons seized since Friday evening,” Anthony Guglielmi said. “Several people of interest are also being questioned in relation to some of our incidents and detectives have good video leads in others.”

Former school resource officer Scot Peterson was widely criticized after he failed to confront a shooter who opened fire and killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last year.

The Broward Sheriff's Office active shooter policy calls for deputies to interrupt a shooting and search for victims when there's a ceasefire.

He was armed but never went inside the building

When shots rang out at the Parkland school, Peterson didn't run toward the gunfire.

If this cop is convicted of cowardice or whatever, it opens the door for anybody and everybody to also be convicted on similar accusations;

You’re driving down the road and see an accident happen, why didn’t you climb into the burning wreck and try to save the victims?  Go to jail.

You’re at the grocery store and a deranged killer with an AK-47 marches in and starts shooting people, why didn’t you try and tackle the guy and save the victims?  Go to jail.

You hear your neighbor beating on his wife, why didn’t you go over there and save her?  Go to jail.

We can do this all day.  Even soldiers who swear an oath to obey their officers can refuse a suicidal order and I’ll point out that when the Columbine attack happened, dozens of cops including a SWAT team arrived within minutes and proceeded to… wait outside for a half hour, as the victims inside bleed to death.

 No.238642

Cops exist for the state, not the people.

They will eagerly confront someone that is unarmed or less likely to shoot and treat them as an extreme threat that they have every right to kill for safety, but when a true threat comes along they are no longer so brave.

The concept of the police is so broken to begin with and the proof only adds up against their existence.

MONROEVILLE, PA. (KDKA) – Up until now, the only information available from the Monroeville Mall shooting was from police statements and reactions from witnesses. But now, authorities are giving the first glimpse at the actual evidence from surveillance cameras.

The images show men from two rival groups entering the mall, cameras capturing punches thrown during the physical fights, then finally a gunman opening fire. Shoppers are also seen ducking and running for cover both outside and inside the mall.

The shooter, police say, is 21-year-old Brandon Noel. At a preliminary hearing Monday, a judge ordered him to stand trial in the crime.

Calling the surprising May surge in illegal immigrant arrests on the border the “worst case scenario,” a top immigration analyst has boosted the expected level of crossings 10%, to over 1 million.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Wednesday revealed that May apprehensions topped 144,000. This year has seen 676,315 apprehensions so far, up 99% over this time last year.

That shocked immigration officials who had hoped it would drop in part due to the Trump administration’s get tough efforts on the border and the potentially deadly heat migrants encounter traveling through northern Mexico.
