Metroid isn't about momentum. It's about traversing a tough-as-nails environment with a tank-like mecha suit for experienced players. If you want ninja momentum, go play Ninja Gaiden. There's a reason why Nintendo didn't let that hack Sakamoto make another metroid game for years after SM. You seem to have something against the loss of momentum. I agree, mostly, since it is one of SM best aspects, but I can see why the momentum of SM is traded for speed and more rapid movement in the later entries. I like both styles, since one gives me absolute control, but the other one sets up for tricky moment, fun puzzles and quick positioning. Also:

Well, see ZM. I really liked it, because of the amazing worldbuilding. Story, gameplay, bosses, environment, music, everything. Probably my favorite right after SM.

The real problem is that it was an FPS in the first place. Any translation of a platform with extensive verticality like Metroid should have been third-person to facilitate all the platforming action. What Metroid Prime should have been was Super Mario 64 crossed with Jet Force Gemini. Interestingly, Retro Studios realized this initially too. It was only that Miyamoto forced Retro to change it to first-person in order to satisfy his narcissism.

I think you are thinking about those single-with jumps, where if you fall you take at least half a tank of damage. What I was talking about is just normal ledges and the occasional pillar room. In case of those single-block jumps - then yes, you are right in it being a massive casualizer, but on simple ledgejumps or other basic platforming, it really doesn't help much in movement but it makes the overall journey look a lot more fluent.

Momentum defines the game being tank-like. Moving and turning has a weight to it, and you have to run up before making a long jump. ZM and Fusion felt more quick and nimble, like a ninja, where you could turn on a dime and instantaneously have max acceleration. Activating speed boost in Super feels like you're moving faster and faster. Activating it in F/ZM feels like you're waiting for the flux capacitor to charge up. It feels unnatural, because you don't have any acceleration to that point.
And if Super missed the point of the first two, why is it the most popular, and why have all later titles been poor attempts at mimicking Super?

Except not all sequence breaks require shinesparking, see >>15263250 . I agree on your tank argument, but feeling ninja-like is an exaggeration. The mockball is most likely a coding fuckup, and even without that the game still feel fluent and constantly like you are moving. Same with ZM/F, you don't have to use all movement options available, but you still feel like a tank when moving through the game. And only part of that feeling is more impactful movement. To me, the quick/nimble style and the tanky/inertial style are two sides of the same coin. Both great, but with their own merits.

It is absolutely not a fuckup. It lets you sequence break past parts with doors sliding down. Normally this requires you to use the speed booster, but mockball gets you through, because the doors slide down. The devs could've just as easily made the doors slide up, it still works for the speed booster (since you get past them before they close). It absolutely cannot be a coincidence for the mockball to just barely make it through the doors, sliding down to give you more time. Besides, the morph ball bouncing when it hits the ground isn't just an animation, it's the game's physics at play. You're still following the game's logic when you hit the ground without bouncing, it's not some unchecked glitch you use to crash the game or anything.

The Prime series is garbage, the first was good but the others just dragged the concept on way too long, I hope to go Prime 4 isn't just a rehash of the same fucking dead ass concept. However you want to slice it, it doesn't look good for Prime 4. First person platform adventure games are few and far between, and good ones are even more rare. The last word I'd use to describe a tank is momentum. Slow and methodical is more fitting. Samus' jump is floaty on purpose so the player could be more precise in shooting enemies. The numerous hazard pits and enemies trying to bump you in are why you need to take things slow. Super Metroid is only liked years after release because newer gamers are such shit at games that the first two are impossible for them to handle, while easy mode Super is hard for them. It also has to do with people being graphics snobs and wanting a later 16-bit game with high production values and the cost of tighter gameplay. The sequels are poor attempts at being Super for the same reason we keep having to suffer ADAM and other story tripe, because Sakamoto will only do things his way and ignore everything else.

Super Metroid will forever remain the best in the series until or if ever Nintendo pulls their collective heads out of their Japanese asses and starts making the series in the correct 2D style again on the main home console platform which can now utilize all the updated modern graphical bells and whistles and better quality audio abilities.

The idea of a Federation Trooper spin off game wasn't bad, it's was timing and execution of it's release was the horrible part. A spin off (with the Prime name) released when the series future seemed dead after Other M and the statement from Tanabe about "chibi" art style said to make the visuals clearer being contradicted by how Hunters on the NDS didn't require it (nor did anyone complain about it's visuals being unclear).

Since a lot of the inspiration for Metroid was Aliens, I like to think she's similar to Ripley. I think the games reflect this a little. She can take charge and get shit done, but she also has motherly instincts and a gentle side.
