I'd argue it was the opposite. His surprise revealed he still was habituated to thinking that what he saw through his senses was the ultimate reality. If he accepted it was just a figment of his imagination, he wouldn't be surprised at all at the "rules" being broken like that. So even though he was consciously aware (as in, had been shown) that it was an illusion, he still hadn't accepted it.
Hence, why he said "whoa/wow".
This is corroborated by the following scene where he fails to make the jump.
